Well I had an interesting weekend.  I took off work Friday so that I could get my long ride in so i wouldn't have to worry about it in Michigan.  I got 85 miles in just over 5 hours in the worst headwind I have ever had to deal with.  I then got a 30 minute run in and felt great.  Unlike my last long ride where I pushed a littel harder I was using this ride to get my nutrition and timing dialed in.  I also used Endurolytes for the first time.  Overall I felt great and had zero issues.  I think with cutting back on the Perpetuem to 1.25 scoops an hour from 1.5 and using the Endurolytes it really helped.

I was hoping to get an OWS in Lake Michigan as we were staying right on the beach but the waves were terrible on Saturday and Sunday the lake was like 50 degrees -ugh.  We ended up getting home late on Sunday so I pushed my 2.5 hour long run to this morning but when I woke up it was raining and my future Ironman a** was not in the mood to run in the rain for 2-1/2 hours.  I am kind of worried that I slacked off this weekend but I have made a mental note to just kick some butt this final week of peak and nail all my workouts and go out with a bang! Hopefully it works haha.

I remember this exact feeling during my training at this time last year.  You have put in a ton of training and are ready.  The most important thing you did was to dial in your nutrition.  Now that you are confident with that, you should be confident in yourself for the day.  Just don't try to match KC's swim

Hey Team - just woke up from a much needed nap and getting ready to pack the gear for the long trip home tomorrow. Wow I can't believe all the stuff we drag around with us on races LOL.

Quick update on the body - IT IS WORKING Laughing.

Thanks Kevin (nakdboardr).

KTC - not sure if I mentioned this to you or not but I signed up to be a volunteer at Louisville - I will be at teh practice swim on Saturday morning working for a couple of hours and I will be in T1 from 7-10 on race day. I will also be at the finish line screaming for you! I will send you a message on FB as well. I would love to meet you and your team when I am there.

Stay safe everyone.

KC

I am volunteering at IM KY as well.  I will be a bike course marshal from 7-12:30.  Lets make sure to meet up on Sat afternoon/evening and at the finish area.

Jenny - you will have no problem with the bike - great work last weekend.  If anything you have gotten out to that course so many times you are starting to make me nervous!

Awesome t-shirts.  Great idea baout having everyone just order their own.  iwas gonna buy everyone shirts but then I was hesitating at the thought of droppin another couple hundred on shirts - ugh

FYI - not sure if yo know this but I saw it on my calendar a few weeks ago and thought about you but forgot to mention it - National Grandparents Day is on SundaySeptember 9, 2012!!  How fitting is that to dedicate the race to your grandma on such an awesome day all around!!

Jennifers - 2012-08-13 10:49 PM

After reading about your race, I am feeling better about IMWI.  I rode the course in Madison one last time yesterday.  I am feeling better about making the bike cutoff.  I think as the training has ramped up, and it's getting closer, I keep feeling more and more anxious about it.  I keep thinking about my grandma though, and it helps me push through.  I finally wrote on my blog (been a little behind on that and logging workouts due to the increase in volume with training) and wrote about the influence my grandma has had on this journey.  My race shirt for my support crew has her quote on the back.  (Plus the front is a pretty creative design, if I don't say so myself- http://www.customink.com/signup/19lt8nt9?pc=SUS-51098&cm_cat=fa...

Simone - listen to these guys when they talk about HR training - they rock - hell , you rock - you are doing awesome and you have a great handle on all of it. I like your approach, patience wins the race and you are doing everything in great order and not getting to far ahead of yourself.

kruzmeister - 2012-08-14 3:50 AM

Hi Team,

hope you are all traveling well, wet and windy day here in Oz, good for running, not so good for cycling (love my new trainer!).

krazytallchick - thanks for the warm welcome and the info Smile and congrats on the house offer, hope it all goes smooth for you. Your hubby is a wise man, keep the focus on your race, the house stuff will be there after you are declared an Ironman! How long to go now?

Tim - I'm not doing HR training yet but I'm very interested in doing it. I read a bit about it a few months ago, but I found the concept of testing to work out your HR zones a bit confusing, would be more than grateful for any help in that area. I have an old Polar HR monitor, ironically that I bought 18 years ago when I was doing Tris back then, but never actually used it, but it still works. It is very basic so I may upgrade it. The program I'm doing is from an online app, but it is very similar to the 16 week 3x oly BT program. It uses RPE or HR zones (I'm presently going by RPE till I can work the other out).

Well done on a great ride by the way, the bike is my nemesis, haha, especially in a head wind. I can run in rain, wind or hail, but on the bike I am a complete sook! Glad the nutrition went well for you too, that's something else I'm gunna be nagging you about later on down the track! Wink

Deb - Thanks for the feedback, yeah I'm tending to think in the same vein as you. I obviously don't want to overtrain, but I don't want to come in under trained either. It probably doesnt matter so much for me this year cause I'm only looking to do Oly's and even with my pace the times stated allow me more than enough mileage to cover the distances, but next year I'll be training for my first HIM, so that may change it a bit. Hopefully by then I will have lost some poundage and be a bit faster too.

So sorry to hear about your father, my dad suffered from it most of his life too, being on the bipolar spectrum mine cycles thankfully as I just couldn't imagine feeling that way day in day out for years on end. As you say, you gotta fight back when the darkness hits and like you, I find training helps enormously. Getting involved in triathlon has definitely been one of the wisest decisions I've made.

Jennifers - 2012-08-13 11:49 PM

KC- Congrats!  I have been swamped with training this weekend and other things, but I was following you on my computer and phone all day!!  You were motivation for me to get out there for my long run!  I kept thinking...14 miles is nothing!  KC is dominating 140.6 miles right now!

(Plus the front is a pretty creative design, if I don't say so myself- http://www.customink.com/signup/19lt8nt9?pc=SUS-51098&cm_cat=fa... of my former students mailed me a postcard from Kona with the Ironman on it (her aunt lives "Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing." Followed by, "Go get it JT!"

I think once I get to taper, I will start to calm down.  I think before when it was farther away, it didn't seem as daunting...now it's only 27 days away!

KC, again Congrats, and I can't wait to hear more about your day...I saw they suspended registrations for IMNY for next year...

Happy Training!

Jenny

KTC - don't worry about the house - that will be fine - can't wait to cheer you on.

krazytallchick - 2012-08-13 8:49 AM Welcome to the group Simone!

i train using time for both the run and the bike and I am slower then most. It is hard to get use to in the beginning but I do believe in the long run it helps you.

Last night we received an offer on our house.....been trying to sell our house since the first of the year. I had predicated that something like this would happen right before my race and BAM. We want to move out of state and haven't planned on anything till our house sells and now so many thoughts are running through my head of what we have to do between now and when we move. The hubby is just telling me to relax and just focus on one task at a time and that is the race.

Ok Team.

I made it home safe and sound -but also stiff and sore. Yell

I think I am recovering decently however. I will work on my race report over the next couple of days and post it for all of you soon.

I just want to say one more time, I can not express in words what this forum has meant to me on so many different fronts in my life. Thanks for helping me along the way during this great journey.

I will share one bit of my race report with you right now however and that is regarding my remarkable swim LOL. I figured out today how I did it  and shared it with Tim.

2.4 miles in 58 minutes for me was incredible so I have contemplated how it could have happened and I figured out that several things conspired together for the perfect storm and here is the equation I came up with:

Current + Salt+Suit+$hit = unbelievable buoyancy and fast swims Laughing

Have a great night team and stay safe.

Thought I would share the medal with you - hope you don't mind.

The only way I'd ever swim that fast would be if I had a bull shark snapping at my heels, which is quite possible on an OWS down under! Surprised

Glad to hear you made it home safe and sound my friend. Love the bling! Smile

Hi Everyone!  Sorry I have been MIA these last few days with all the stress that I am experiencing I feel it is better to stay off the websites.

All parties have officially agreed to the terms of our house selling.  We move in October and we still have to find a place to live.  That will be on our agenda in September.

I know I am tapering but I sure as heck don't feel like it as I feel like I am going a mile a minute getting everything done that I have been putting off for some time.  Hopefully this weekend I can start thinking and gathering things for the special needs bags.

The hubby is still trying to figure out how to make the Garmin GTU notify everyone where I am without him having to email everyone.  Not quite sure he has that figured out.  Stay tuned.

Last weekend, I had a terrible bike ride.  I was on a computrainer riding part of the Louisville route and I am hoping/praying that they had the resistance on my bike way too high as I was barely moving. My legs were tired as all get out after riding for 3 hours and I barely made one loop of the ride.  When I actually rode the route I was going faster then what I did on the computrainer.

I can't believe the day is almost here!

Simone - I would suggest you figure out your appropriate zones then apply that to your current training program.  I think you will really like it since you made the comment about time or miles.  I used to be a huge "miles" guy until about 2 years ago and made the switch and I have not (knocking on wood) have had any training injuries since then.  Training by time also is nice since you know exactly what you are going to do.  Somedays its 5 miles some days its 6 but as long as my effort is in the zone I avoid over or under training.

Check out this BT article which I used to determine my zones.  It is fairly easy and just requires a HR monitor and stop watch, then just plug the numbers into the HR area in your training log and you have your zones.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=633

Let me know if you have any questions!

Congrats on the house - now you have 17 hours to yourself next weekend to work out all the details out in your head!

Just stay calm and focused.  You have put too much time and effort into your training to let a bunch of stress destroy it all.  Remember that things will work out and you will have plenty of time to focus on that AFTER the race.  You have done an awesome job and will be an Ironman next weekend.  Just think...the first thing you get to hang in your new house is your Finishers Medal and picture.Laughing

I am putting mantras on bands that I will wear during the run to keep me motivated and I wanted to put our group name on it but wanted to make sure I had it correct.

Hi Team,

been a rough day was looking forward to finishing off week one of my program strong, but instead I spent the morning throwing up, not sure if I've picked up a bug or if it was food related but either way I was in no shape to train. Ever since I had my gallbladder out my stomach has been hyper sensitive, so I'm hoping I just ate something I shouldn't have. Only got a short ride tomorrow, so hoping to catch up on the swim and run I missed today also.

So how is everyone else going?

KTC - congrats on the house sale, I'm sure everything else will work itself out, like Tim says having an Ironman finisher's medal to hang in the new house will be sweet!

Tim - thanks for the link, I'll check it out over the next couple of days.

Incidentally I'm looking at upgrading my HR monitor, and was looking at either a Polar RS300X or a Garmin FR60, both are within my price range (approx $150) and I was wondering if anyone else has had any experience with either watch?

I am a big believer in HR training.  used a Polar for many years - the only donwside with the models I used were no GPS and the footpod lost battery with no warning, so I did not always make it through a run.  Upsides were great data, easy to adjust, many options of on screen view while you are working out, and the watch is standard battery so it has power for years on end.

Was convinced to try a garmin when my polar bonked after 5 years of good use.  upside - GPS so no footpod, easily downloaded to many online training sites.  DOwnsides - limited on screen views (does not show lap time or distance while running, only in history mode), battery runs out after 8-12 hours of sattelite use.

Due to the price of the Garmin that I bought, I will keep it for a while.  But when it is time to get a new one, I will most likely be going back to Polar.

Good luck - HR training is a great way to build endurance and then speed.  You will be surprised at how your body will be able to go faster in the same HR zone after only a few months of training using the zones properly.

Hi Team,

been a rough day was looking forward to finishing off week one of my program strong, but instead I spent the morning throwing up, not sure if I've picked up a bug or if it was food related but either way I was in no shape to train.

Sorry - did it again.  My wife is even out of town and I still have her logged in to this computer.

Simone - Brian is the guy to listen to for the HR watch.  I have the Garmin Forerunner 405 which I bought for marathon training before this triathlon stuff became a reality.  My buddy is going to let me use his Garmin Forrunner 310XT which is waterproof and easily switched between sports.  Amazon has them for $250.  I know it is not in your price range but if you are doing triathlons I would highly recommend something that is waterproof.  My Garmin 405 is so sensitive to water and sweat that I basically have to have the bezel locked and cannot change anythign once I start sweating or it will freak out and lock up.  I would say the functions you want to make sure you have are:

  • programming of custom zones and computer uploading compatibility
  • waterproof
  • No bezel ( I am not sure if Garmin has improved this but the bezel feature SUCKS.  Good old fashioned buttons are the best)
  • GPS capable

Good luck

Big weekend coming up... I just have to make it through today -haha Surprised.  Got a late bike ride on the trainer at 10pm last night which always wipes me out.  Struggled to get my butt to the pool this morning but managed to get 3100Y swim in.  Gonna do a 1 hour run at lunch and then I have a show tonight until 2am -ughh.  Sometime tomorrow afternoon I will do a 3 hour run and then Sunday I have 5 hour bike with 1 hour run/brick.

I was mentioning to Sarah on Facebook - I have never been this tired (unless I was deathly ill or something).  I am think ing of going up to my place in Wisconsin next weekend with my kids and would miss my 4 hour "taper" bike ride.  Do you tink that is a big deal if I miss that?  I might just do a little more volume in the week on my 1 hour rides to  make up for some of the lost volume?  thoughts??
