Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED We all do it I just thought that was was a funny typo. I've been slowly moving to Whole30. It's just too big of a jump having young children at home and not being the one responsible for meal planning to go cold turkey. So there's been no grains in 3 days and I killed fibre one bars. Today minus a Greek Yogurt for instance I'm perfect. The birthday is Thursday and I have to have cake with the kids but I'm hoping next Monday to start at day one. My diet was pretty good to begin with but killing off bread, and I love OatNut bread, and pasta hurts. I also really enjoy oatmeal with blueberries and flax seed. I tried to talk my wife into it but she wants no part of it. |

52 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED Okay, so what do people do for hydration on long runs? I don't think I want to use my hand held thermos (which has a strap for my hand). I don't know if I'll like the bottles attached to the strap around the waist, and I believe Stacey trains with a camelback. Also, this issue hasn't come up yet, but I'm wondering about socks that people use for those people that train in really cold weather. Any recommendations? As for the training by HR, I like it because it keeps me in check. I often have no concept of an "easy" or "hard" run, but I can train knowing I have to stay within certain heart rate zones. For me, this is the best way to train. |

I will be using HRM and power soon and I must say I am not thrilled with the prospects of training in HR zones etc because I anticipate that I will be going really really slowly, which will be really really humbling.
Me too (only RPE)... did the IM like that too... NOT that it is smart at all....just have a weird aversion to electronics that I really need to get over!! I have never raced any race with any device except once wore a watch in the marathon that I wanted to BQ (I did!... but still didn't "pace" properly anyway..went out too fast... and actually stopped looking at my watch all together at mile 20 because it was just stressing me out too much!) |

Sometimes I bring a bottle, chuck it, and drive by to get it after....or I leave bottles at predesignated spots along the way...I live in Maine, and my routes are kind of rural, so I have not had any issues of the bottles being tainted. |

I usually take a tbsp daily and wondering if I should stop it. Also - is sushimi ok to stay on plan? I'm going to say no to the psyllium fiber from what I read on the Whole30 forums. I think it's not ok because it interferes with the absorption of minerals and nutrients. I don't know that it's not allowed, but it's not encouraged if that makes sense. I have no idea about the sushimi, is that just raw fish? I'm trying to figure out if the Jennie-o ground turkey is ok. It has "natural flavoring", what is that? I googled it and can't find anything on their forums. Anyone know? The natural flavoring has soy protein in it. I was on a severely restricted diet when I BF Madge due to a crazy long list of food intolerances and allergies, and this was listed as having soy in it. Glad I asked, it's going in the freezer! |

I will be using HRM and power soon and I must say I am not thrilled with the prospects of training in HR zones etc because I anticipate that I will be going really really slowly, which will be really really humbling. You will be going very slowly, and you will hate it at first. It does get better I promise. Generally there is a 4 - 8 week adjust period where you get used to training by HR, its going to feel super slow and frustrating but it will get easier (and much faster) in time. The cool thing that starts to happen is that your pace will start to drop for all of zones. This makes it easy to see and measure progress because your pace at X HR will decline over time. Why would a person (me) not see improvement? A long running background and already tapped out on potential? Age? I know this works for most people, I hear about it from folks in this group as well as tranining buddies, but I have not seen any improvement. Being a slower runner you would think the gains would be more noticable than someone who is faster. It's just frustrating for me and I don't get it. |

I used to run with a water bottle so it was no big deal to switch. The one I have, can't think of the brand, it's a bright green/yellow bottle, has a pocket on the wrist part. I stuff Gu's (Lara bar now), money, advil, chapstick, etc. I used to wear a fuelbelt back in the day, but can't stand to have anything around my waist now. |

Master 2151 Johns Creek, Georgia | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED Wow, you've all been busy today! OK, ortho recommends another injection based on pain level and some tests she did. She did answer all my questions. Also recommended that I need to do pilates, yoga and core to help with all my back & hamstring issues. Which I already know, but if I don't I will continue to have these problems. So, I have my marching orders. And my shoulder - she gave me a big rubber band thing and a sheet of exercises to do. If not better in 4 weeks we'll talk again about next steps. I really hate to do PT stuff. |
