LOL!! It's funny because I went with the B group, and it has been well over a month or two since I rode with them. I ended up front of the pack, I hadn't realized how fast I was hitting on those hills! Good thing I borrowed my friend's Garmin for the time being (my wheels are going to be sold very soon! Someone is very interested, so it's just the matter of getting the money in my pocket!), otherwise, I wouldn't have known about those QOM's!

One check off my Bucket List...I actually didn't really have it there, because it's kind of the furthest ride to go from Las Vegas (an hour drive, it's cooler there vs in the Valley. 78-82 degrees compared to 97-103!), and I did Cold Creek Climb. I wasn't sure how I would do on this ride because I've never done it. All I know it was one tough ride. I was and FELT very strong! I was utterly shocked! The last 3.7 miles was the hardest part. At that point, I was sorta diminishing a little bit. The thinner air was affecting me a little bit. Not too terrible, but enough that it felt like I couldn't get good inhalation.
After a little break to refuel (Someone SAG'd for us, which is totally awesome!!!), we had Ice Pops. GENIUS!! Then what comes up, gotta come down.

I hate the fact that I spin out at 38-40 mph. Drives me nuts!! I also got Speedplay Zero (friend gave it to me for free), so I installed them on my bike yesterday. I'm not sure, but I think it feels like I am much faster and have better power transfer than my Look (the model I have is pretty much the cheapest one). I'm looking forward in getting my Sidi Genius shoes. I feel like my tri shoes are not stable in the heel area. I found a great deal on eBay, so it's an early birthday treat for myself. :D

Hope everyone's weekend/races are doing well!!

ColdCreekElevation

Sounds like a great ride DJ - you look to be having a fantastic bike season!

That is a lot of climbing and a lot of saddle time!!  Congrats to your husband!!  It was a bit warm here on the east coast as well!

I have a new favorite trail run and it is only about 20 minutes from the house!!! I was about a mile short of the lake, but was running low on water so had to turn back. Next time though! It was mostly cloudy so the pictures look a little washed out - much better in person.

WOW! Those are some epic views -- that would be inspiring!

Well I had a good motivating weekend..since Friday I have swam (swum?) /biked/run 99 miles --- I know...one mile short!! But all of those were pretty hard fought as mentally I was just shot this weekend. My legs kept cramping on the bike (and I went 10 miles in the wrong direction!) and then felt like lead this morning on my run...but I didn't give up. Just thought keep moving forward and I did. I just got to believe I'm capable of more than I think!

I also just booked at training stay at Tremblant in a month...all by myself..I could care less if I bike swim or run...I'll be all alone for 3 whole days!!

should be an interesting week with the kids at home but it just for one week and then camp starts!!

Always bring Salt sticks or SportLegs (I prefer Salt sticks) for when your legs are cramping up. It's usually a tell-tale sign of nutritional issue. Pop one in and in a few minutes you'll feel like new legs again. Electrolytes is also a big plus, but I believe (not 100% sure on this), they do not contain enough sodium and not as "concentrated" as it is in the pills. Electrolytes mixed with X amount of sodium is in the WHOLE bottle, you need something more concentrated for situations like this. I always carry about 5-10 pills in my saddle bag, not just for me, but for someone else that may be cramping up or showing some signs of lack of electrolytes. Before every ride, between June and September, I always take one SaltStick, then take another half way due to the excessive heat.

I do occasionally check my sweat's "saltiness" by just wiping and licking it. If it's mildly salty, then I know I had enough. If extremely salty, I know I didn't have enough, so I pop in one and usually that does the trick.

i can't say if it's the same for the run, I want to say yes, same situation, and you don't have to drink anything to cause sloshy stomach. I never took it for my runs, even when I was training for my half-marathons, but I did carry it with me for "just in case". :-D

Robin, congrats to your husband! Great pics too!

Had a good weekend here. Saturday, we got rained out, had to hit the trainer. But, that was ok because not having to go out to our starting place and a much earlier start, gave me some much needed time to work on my basement project and cut the lawn when it finally cleared up. So I got a lot done on Saturday! It's always a good feeling for me when things in my personal life are taken care of and I can just get up Sunday stress free. I Actually, woke up at 5am and went over to the pool. I know....I know....yes, I finally got back in the pool. I didn't seem to miss a beat. Had a great swim. 1000m warm up, then a 1000m TT and 500m cool down. Felt pretty good. TT came in at 18:09. Definitely not my fastest, and to "some folks" around here that's DOG SLOW! LOL. But, I couldn't ask for any more than that being out of the pool for a month and being very spotty before that. After that I headed out for another ride. REALLY hot and humid. I failed a on my 2x20' @90% intervals, but I still felt pretty good and was riding pretty fast during my intervals.

Had a little run in with a motorist on our group ride Sunday. I was up front waiting for the group after an interval. I guess the driver tried to run some of our guys into a ditch. She and her husband stopped as we re-grouped by a stop sign and I had everyone move over and waved them through to go around, but the guy rolls down the window and starts yelling. I, being the outspoken person I am, gave him a "yeah yeah, shut up and move along" The guy told me to shut my mouth and the woman yelled at me and said she paid taxes her and should have to go around cycling groups on "her roads". I told her I paid taxes too. She obvously, doesn't understand what she is paying because she said "not here". I was like, what is this....Deliverence? lol Well, when the husband told me to shut my mouth, I guess I lost it and started screaming back at them. Probably, not my best moment! Anyway, they dialed 911 and told them the were being abused by cyclist. He had his phone on speaker and 911 asked if this was an emergency. Since no one was attacking him or harming them in anyway 911 told the guy he shouldn't call 911 for non-emergencies and hung up on him! LOL We went on our merry way. I just HATE people in outskirt Chicagoland burbs that don't want to share "their roads" In CA people were so respectful and nice to cyclist. They really hate us by me. It really sucks!

Sounds like a great weekend of training Brian, too bad about the jack wagon in the car.  CA has a generally friendly approach to cyclist, but riding a lot out there I found that they have their share of jerks too.

For the record, swimming 3 times a week and I would like to do at 1000m time trial at that pace.

Saturday the workout called for a two hour ride with a bit of a warm up and then as hard as I think I can handle for 60 minutes, finishing the balance at Z3. I got a late start and it was hot and humid and after about 5 minutes of the hard effort I am thinking I am going to cut back and try it another day.  All of a sudden another triathlete pulls up besides me and it is my coach.  Just a coincidence, but no slacking now!!  He rode with me for the bulk of the hour before he turned off as his ride was a lot longer than mine.  He has IMLP coming up.

Looking forward to hearing from the people that raced this weekend!

I don't like duathlons!

It was supposed to be an Oly tri, in keeping with tradition, the first run was 5K around the swim buoys. My strategy was to not let my first run go below a certain pace (my 9 mile pace) so I'd have something left for the second run, which was a 10K in the heat. I stuck with the plan but watched my competition all hit T1 before I did.

On the bike they just all got away from me. It was frustrating. It's a beautiful course, somewhat hilly and at altitude, and I felt like I did it as fast as possible, but they just rode away from me. The second run was hot and hilly and I caught a few folks. The last couple miles were really painful, and I definitely didn't have anything left at the finish line.

Overall, I was pleased with my race "execution". I trained for a 6 mile run, not a 9 mile one, so I think I adapted as well as possible. But I was a little disappointed in my results. Some of it was just a lot of fast people showed up for this race--something not in my control. But some of it was that I worked so hard on the bike this year and only improved slightly (average of 18.2 mph compared to 17.7 on the same course last year). I was hoping to improve to 19 mph average, but perhaps that wasn't realistic.

More biking! More faster biking!

that's a tough workout! Just an FYI, it's a lot more painfull but if you find a hill/mountain to climb for an hour you pretty much have no choice but to ride all out for the hour. 99% of people seem to get their best 1hour FTP results on a full hour climb. I've only had the opportunity to do it once. There is nothing close to that around here to do it on. It's much harder to hold FTP on the flatland.

Great job, Jaime! I think your bike improvement is notable, even if it wasn't what you wanted. That's a really good improvement over that distance. But I agree, after being forced into a duathlon last weekend, I like tris much better! Great that you caught a few people on the second run, though--it means you went right on the bike and they went too hard! When I felt like wilting last weekend on the second run I kept repeating something that one of our tri club running coaches said--there is a difference between pain and discomfort. Everyone is uncomfortable (or should be) towards the end of a race. If it's not pain but "just" discomfort, find the strength to push through. It sounds like you did! Well done!

Sounds like everyone had a good weekend of training. Mine was mostly good. Friday evening I had an hour and 15 minute run planned--storms rolled through, and although I don't mind running in the rain, lightening scares me. But I went out anyway--temps had dropped a bit, and there was no sun because of the storm, so that was nice. Stupid me went sockless and didn't use Body Glide on my feet, which got wet from rain and I ended up with blisters! And I did not have a very good run--as hard as I tried to get my pace to where I wanted it, I kept slowing down at every mile. But I got it done--without getting struck by lightening!

Saturday morning I had a 4 hour bike ride, and it was awesome! My bike has been lacking with the things I've had going on, so I was nervous that I would have trouble. Went with a group but hung off the back so I could ride in my aero bars. Other than shoulders and neck hurting (from lack of riding that long recently), I felt great! The weather was absolutely gorgeous, not a cloud in the sky. I was supposed to do a 45 minute run afterwards, but I had run out of water and nutrition on the bike ride (actually my husband did, so I gave up some of my stuff for him :-)), so I planned to try to make it through a 30 minute run. But I actually felt pretty good! Ended up with a 40 minute run, negative splits, much faster even than my run the evening before. The only problem was the heat--it was likely around 83 at that time (11:30am) and high humidity. I did feel like I might burst into flames at any point! But legs and insides felt good, so I was super happy.

Only down side to the weekend is I felt a little sick Sunday morning, so I didn't get in my long run or easy bike.

Have a fantastic week everyone!

Just trying to catch up on posts. Last week was crazy and this week will be worse. Congrats to everyone for all the good work you are putting in (great riding DJ!). And congrats to Robin for living in such a beautiful place and having such a hill climbing, hard charging hubby.

I'm in the midst of rethinking my race schedule for the rest of the year and will probably drop a couple to make more room for training for the ones I really care about. It might be different if I could get in key/long workouts during the week, but since weekend time is at a premium, think I just need to race less. I spent a lot of the time in yesterday's Du thinking along these lines (when I should have been pushing the pace). I'd actually planned to do a long trail run after the race, but it was hot and had no gas left, so bagged it.

Hey I've got a race question that I need some advice on:

Next Sundays race is a time trial start for the swim. I'm really excited about this!

The only dilemma I have is I'm right on the break point for the 2 groups. I'm thinking to go in the faster group. At worse I get passed by a few at best I swim a little faster. I doubt that I'll burn out by going to fast on the swim.

If you're truly on the breaking point and want to put in a good performance I'd definitely go with the faster group. You may be able to draft your way to a faster time. But if it's a real stretch you are at risk of being swum over

Thanks Brain,
My time puts me in the faster group I'm just at the back of the pack in that group. The other group would be slower for me.

That is still a pretty nice improvement, especially if you swam last year and ran this year before the cycle segment.  Nice work adapting to what was outside your control Jaime!

I doubt that I'll burn out by going to fast on the swim.
If you're truly on the breaking point and want to put in a good performance I'd definitely go with the faster group. You may be able to draft your way to a faster time. But if it's a real stretch you are at risk of being swum over
Thanks Brain, My time puts me in the faster group I'm just at the back of the pack in that group. The other group would be slower for me.

My experience is that most people over seed themselves in a time trial start.  So I wouldn't hesitate to go with the faster group since your swim times are legitimately in that group.

Well, overall, yesterday’s race went pretty well. My family came out from Rochester Saturday, so I spent some time with them, before going through my bag one more time and heading to bed. Had to get up at 3:45 to head to the race because it was an hour away and opened at 5:00 (my younger brother was real happy with that). Got my transition area all set up, hung out a bit, went for a mile or so warm up run, then got the wetsuit on and warmed up in the water.

Swim: 21:28 – The swim went pretty well. I went off in the second wave, 5 minutes after the men 40 and over. We managed to have an exceptionally violent start, at least from my point of view, with several people getting hit trying to get a good line on the first buoy. I managed to get clear pretty quickly and settle in. By around the halfway point, I started running in to the back end of the first wave. Luckily it was pretty spread out, so I managed to swim past people without too much difficulty.

T1: 2:01 – Definitely an area I need to improve on. Managed to get the wetsuit off better this time, but still pretty slow overall. Bike shoes slowed me down too, I think it’s time for me to finally figure out how to start with them clipped in…

Bike: 1:09:51 – The bike course was relatively flat, with a few rollers and one substantial hill into and out of the park where transition was. However, it was impressively windy out there. Overall, I wasn’t terribly thrilled with my bike. My legs were just not feeling it for the first 5 miles or so. After that I finally got into some form of rhythm, but I just could not settle where I wanted to. The course itself was very convoluted, full of loops, out and backs, and one U turn over a dirt road. Thankfully, it was very well marked and there were volunteers and police at every intersection where you could possibly go the wrong way.

T2: 1:16 – Pretty happy with this. Lost a few second because someone had racked their bike directly over my gear, but just slid it over, grabbed my shoes and race belt, and got going.

Run: 50:25 – Ah the run, always my worst enemy. The run course here was almost entirely on cross country trails within the park. During the pre-race time, the announcer mentioned that it was challenging course. Well, I felt lied to. It was not a challenging course, it was brutal. As soon as you leave transition, you go up some stone steps, up a little hill, and into the woods. At this point, the vast majority of the trail is made up of soft loose sand. The first three miles are mostly uphill, with a few little switchbacks. By the time I got to mile three, I was desperately trying to hold on to 9:00min/mi, which is slow even for me. Luckily, soon after that, we went out on to a road for a little bit. Finally on some solid ground, I managed to regroup. While the road only lasted for maybe half a mile, it was enough settle me down a bit. As the course went back in to the woods, it finally started going back downhill. I made much better time the second half, and was actually feeling pretty good for most of it. As you come out of the woods, the finish chute is not even 100 yards away, and you can see the timer. So, as I come out, I look up, and see 2:29:49. So I just took off at a dead sprint for the finish, aiming to get under 2:25. Well, final time – 2:24:59. :-) Seeing as this was my second Olympic, and my first one was around 2:45, I was pretty psyched. Plus I ended up 2nd in my age group, with the winner finishing 8th overall.

Good thinking Bill!! That's exactly what happened when I was planning out my century rides for the year, and there was a few more that I could have done, but I gave them up because I wanted to have more focus on training for my rides that I do care about (even though San Diego was a bit of a failure, but still, I ended up being very strong on the hills due to the base training).

Sometimes I'm shocked at many races that people do nearly every other weekend, or every weekend, even if they're training for a HIM or IM, to me, I would think that's too much because you're not giving yourself time to focus on the very important long rides/runs.

Jaime

Can I borrow some of your speed please??? I always seem to have a difficult time avg'ing 16.6-17mph for my rides (aside from the huge LONG climb rides). It feels like every ride I go on, the hills are RELENTLESS!

I've always wanted to try a Du. But yes, I can see how it is tricky because you really have to pace yourself on the first run, so you have something left for your bike and the second. I hear it all the time that people have the tendency to go too hard on the bike, and they're gassed for the second run.

At least you got to experience a Du.
