Dee? I have a question about the November challenge. I think I've got mine figured out, but I want to do it by number of days (as in, my goal is to run 12 days, swim 10 days, etc.), but I saw at the top of the post that you want distances or hours. Is that still the case? I can come up with distance or hour goals, but I'd kind of prefer to just do days (after my triathlon, the challenge will be just getting my butt out the door again!).

My computer is about to crash, so I'll type fast. LOL (There are a bunch of posts here that I haven't read yet. I'll have to come back after I reboot).

YES, you can do this.

It's fine to do it by session. The number of sessions becomes your goal.

A lot of people have done this. I even have it in my own goals. I put down the number of sessions that I want to do shoulder exercises.

Originally, I'd figured distance/hours. But # of sessions makes sense. Sometimes, you just don't know how far, or how fast, you're going to go... You just know that you ARE going to get out there and do something.

Exactly! After my race, I just need to force myself to get out and do these things. I don't necessarily want to push myself again right away, so I don't care too much about how far or long I go, just that I GO.

Thanks, Dee! You are so awesome to put this together.

Hey everybody!!! I know I've been MIA for the last few days, but don't worry, I was just out of town. I just finished my race report from the Monster Tri.

I FINISHED MY FIRST RACE!!! WOOHOO!!! I feel like a million dollars. If any of you is contemplating your first competion, I highly recommend just registering and getting on with it. I haven't felt this good about myself in years!

I know I'm one of the last to get to 100%, but don't worry, I will finish either tonight or tomorrow.

I want to thank all of you for your kind words of support and encouragement. If not for all of you I would have probably lazed around the house all weekend. Instead, today I am officially a triathlete. I could not have gotten to this point in my life without you. Weird how people I've never even met can get me choked up....Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Jess

CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We may have encouraged you, but YOU were the one who DID it.

YOU DID IT!!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're a triathlete now! Wooooo Hooooo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey everyone - how are things? I finished up tonight with 2.1 and only needed 2. So I have reached 100%

So far.. the standings look like -

1. Bad Omens - 99.5%

2. Posion Apples - 97.98%

3. Black Magic - 96%

4. Purple People Eaters - 94.72

5. Living Dead - 94.4

6. Things that go Bump - 91.15%

Since a lot of the teams are putting in the actual percentage and then adjusting for those back to 100% that are over I thought I would add that to our spreadsheet as well. Thought it might be nice for those that got over 100 to see. It is attached.

Hey Alyssa, how'd your run go toinght. I did 5.6 miles in 58 min (was my scheduled number of minutes for the day), puts me at 71.3 miles for the month..../em raises an eyebrow in Alyssa's direction.

But, I was trying alot of new things. My wife found some articles that show that everything I know about running is wrong, including my new shoes.

Highlights are:

1. Stretching before a run decreases your performance by roughly 10 percent or by 1 minute over a 10k. It also perports that stretching also does not reduce injury.

2. The new shoes I got with the slight elevation to the heal and arch supports are reportedly more likely to cause injury over the long hall and I should move more towards a near barefoot running shoe, like a flat, Nike Free or a Vibram. The not cushoned shoes force you to use appropriate running form as you can feel the road and your foot position better. if you run in this form you will feel your thighs burn the first day and may need to develop slighlty different calluses on your foot so probly don't try it on a 5 mile + run (not that I would do such a think). Hope it is better by Wed.

3. Breathing too fast while running is bad, cuz its anorobic running. The one article recommended breathing in and out through your nose at a pace of about 15 breaths in and out per minute while running. This is realllly hard to do. I started at a breathing rate of 1 breath in per 2 steps (1 full stride both feet) and out over 3 steps (1 1/2 stride) and held that for the first 5 miles than broke down to a 1 step in 2 steps out for the last half mine. I can not do the nose only thing, I hear it takes alot of work.

4. Nutrition... didnt get that far, cuz I had to go run.

I put the article under gear if you want to read it and there are lots of very intersting lincs off the main article on the web. Way to shake up what I thought I knew.

cool! gonna go read that article. i had NO idea you were so far ahead of me. hmmmmm. what to do?? i'll think of something.

if you have a grassy area that's somewhat big-gish there's a fun drill i read of in one of my tri books. barefoot sprinting. so much fun. anyway, it gives you the feeling of proper running as far as your feet go. i'm all for the barefoot thing, i just don't have any grassy areas around here.
the breathing thing, it takes time to work up to that level i think (mind you, i haven't read the article yet, but just from what i know to be true) for probably 3 months after starting to run, i was panting, and out of breath all the time, and at some point, it just stopped being hard. i don't breath hard when i run now. (ok, when i'm running really hard or fast, then yeah, i breath hard) i go with my feet hitting the ground in-in-in-out-out-in-in-in-out-out and i TRY to go in through the nose, it's harder to do that when it's so cold out, but that's what i know.

anyway, gonna go read that article now. glad you're wife's on the lookout for good info

ETA: the stretching thing, i've read that before too, that you don't stretch cold muscles, it's bad. stretch AFTER you run. ok gonna go read it now.

There is a physical fitness piece to the breathing, but at the same fitness level (compared to last week) I slowed my breathing down by 1-2 in /outs at the same pace, 5.8 mph. So I think it is a combination of the 2. There are a number of cool looking shoes, one actually has toes and you don't wear socks... it just kinda gives you a rubber tread under your foot.

Anyway time to go lift.

I need support. There are soooo many people signed up for the Nov challenge. And I need to put 'em all on teams.... Ahhhhh! LOL

Actually, I'm fine.

The only downside is that because I was playing around with the roster so much, I didn't get to workout as much as I wanted today. (Got a swim in, and my shoulder exercises. But I didn't get to hit the treadmill or bike.)

Most of you are all set. But I keep moving Kelley, Kendra and myself all over the place. Ppppfffttthhh.

Hi Apples--

I just finished a two mile run which-- I believe- put me over my goal by hair. Woot!  Couldn't have done it without the team-- seriously-- ZERO activity to 35 miles this month-- you all rock!

Dad's back at home after the latest stent-- he's a veteran cardiac patient-- double bypass/valve replacement in '96, stents last year, stent this year.  Lucky man. For a guy that hates exercise and loves to eat, he made a bunch of changes 10 years ago that gave him this whole last decade-- and it looks like he might get some more.   Thanks for your inspires in my logs-- I'm gonna to make that my Nov challenge (along with Dee's real one of course!)

Go apples!

I've just joined the 100% club too!  Guess that means we are DONE!!!!!!!  See, I'm planning on being a BOPer so I figured I'd start here and bring up the rear.

No legs for us!

As for today's workout it was great...beautiful weather...oh how I adore the fall.  Decided to do a little extra today to finish off (otherwise I would have needed like 4/10 of a mile tomorrow to finish).

Started back with the running bits too (whopping 2 minutes...1 minute with a break and then another minute)...good news is no calf pain so guess my muscle is all healed.  Yeah.

So now I get a day off before having to worry about starting up the November challenge...guess I better get my rear in gear about joining a gym or I'm gonna have some problems with my swim commitment.

Way to go Apples!  We newbies rock!
