yogachic - 2010-06-21 10:33 AM I had a pretty interesting a weekend!  First, there was a really bad storm Friday night causing a power outage at work.  I left work when it looked like there was a lull in the storm, but it was still raining pretty hard and the roads were full of debris.... So of course this means both my tires flatted   Luckily there was a bike shop nearby so I just had them change my flats.  By the time I was ready to go, the storm had finished.

Saturday was my first long run with my marathon training group.  I'd volunteered to be a pace leader so I was a little worried about the responsibility... but it looks like I have a good group full of first-timers, so it should be a fun summer of training.  Sunday was my long ride-- 52 miles.  I was aiming for 60-something but had to cut it short because I was running late to father's day brunch Embarassed  I should have either started earlier, or rode faster, haha.

Both tires?  That's some bad luck.

I, too, missed a workout due to father's day so don't feel bad.  I didn't get back home till 4:00 yesterday and the prospect of squeezing both a ride and a swim in didn't seem appealing at that time.

I snuck in a short swim in my pool at home last night.  It did wonders for me mentally and felt great.  Really hoping the pulmonary guy says I can train again.  Need to come up with some sort of contingency for these beastly hot days cause high heat & humidity are a disaster for crappy lungs.  Don't want to spend the summer on the trainer but will do whatever it takes to be able to train again.

OK, I have a half aquabike a few weeks out and am concerned about the bottle exchange.  Any thoughts are helpful since I know many of you have done this.

How do you do the exchange?
How do you let them know you want water or gatorade?
Do you slow down? Do they jog to do the hand off?
Do you know when the station is coming up so you know when to dump your bottle off the bike?
Are there usually enough stations that you only need to bring one bottle with you (i.e. reducing weight)?

How does it all work??????

Great race and even more so with a sketchy back.  My Back doc uses active release techniques that seem to help.  Good luck getting that strait.   Share with me any good exercises you get.  I got a simple series of stretches and an exercise that is working for my lower back problem.

Racing is racing.  You may be competing against yourself, but it's still a race.  Good luck and have fun.

Ok, I've never actually used a bottle exchange station, but I will at IMWI.  I think I have a general idea of how they should work, but those with experience chime in to correct me and offer better tips.

There should be information on where the bottle station are either on a course map, with info in race packet, on course website, or conveyed at a pre-race meeting.  Also there will be information on what type of drink is at each station.  I've seen races that offer both at one stop and races that alternate with water at one stop and sport's drink at the next.

They will usually have a drop site either immediately before or immediately after the exchange area.

They will either yell water or gatorade at you or you need to yell at them what you want specifically.  I would still yell to double check.

You will definitely need to slow down to grab the bottle.  I imagine that makes it easier.  I'm not sure if they would jog with you.  I would probably try to grab a bottle early on so if you happen to drop it you have a second chance.

You could do the race with one bottle that would depend on how spread out the station's are.  Also, if you're like me, you may want a bottle of water and gatorade so you can alternate drinks.  I can't just drink straight gatorade for an entire ride and need water mixed in.

I've done one HIM and here what I know:

How do you do the exchange? Ride up and take a bottle.  I made eye contact with the person and grabbed it out of their hand..
How do you let them know you want water or gatorade?  Only used water at mine, but they usually hold one or the other and you need to find the right one.
Do you slow down?  I did after all its 56 mile ride a few seconds will not matter much.
Do they jog to do the hand off?  Not at my race.
Do you know when the station is coming up so you know when to dump your bottle off the bike?  We dumped bottles after the station.  The race map and brief will cover where to dump and pickup.  Pre-ride the course so you can plan for when you do the swap.

Are there usually enough stations that you only need to bring one bottle with you (i.e. reducing weight)?  Based on input from my coaches, weight is not as important as proper hydration and nutrition.  I used a speed fill (40 oz container with a long tube) and I kept one 24 oz bottle with concentrated sports drink.  I used water to mix with my concentrate in my speed fill.   It was hot at my race and my drinks got hot.  Neal's suggestion to mix water and sports drink is a good one.  I ended up pretty short on hydration.  I nutrition clinic I attended this week the instructor said if you don't have to go in two hours your short on hydration.  I didn't have to go for two hours after the race.

I'm still thinking about IM CDA.  My plan is another HIM in Sept, Rich. Marathon in Nov. and Train for the race next June.  Sounds doable, but love your input.

Anyone else heard about CDA Idaho IM?   Sign-up starts next Monday.

So I was riding last night and there were tons of deer out.  On my way back I encountered 2 in the road within a 1/2 mile.  Because I was not sure what to do, since you never know what direction they will run, I just yelled "BEEP, BEEP".  I seem tons encounter more and more deer every time I am out.

Thoughts on what you do, yell, scream, stop and wait, ???

I have an appointment on Thursday with an Airrosti doc, so I'll let you know if he gives me any exercises to do.  I do find that yoga helps because it forces me to stretch and some of the poses specifically stretch the lower back.  I need to be more disciplined with stretching overall.

Good to hear everyone's input on the bottle exchanges.  That's one thing I'm worried about for my half iron, since it's in the middle of July so I'm worried that even with 2 bottles on my frame + my aerodrink bottle, I will still need extra water.  Though I'm a wimp and will probably just opt to stop at the aid stations... I think crashing my bike at a water station during my first tri has made me wimpy in general when trying to negotiate hydration while riding Embarassed

Fi- Welcome back!  Glad to hear you're back to training!

Carrie- You know, I was wondering the same thing!  I saw a deer during my ride on Sunday and wondered what to do if it had jumped out in front of me?

Overall pleased with the Dr visit today.  We're changing up all my inhalers.  He said I can start training again after the weekend.  Wants a few more days ffor the lungs to settle.  I'll have to use the tready/ trainer on really hot & humid days to avoid more irritation to the lungs.

My allergist has reordered the shot serum but it won't be in on time for me to restart shots until after July 4.  That was quite a discussion with the allergist cause she wanted me to retest.  If you have ever had allergy testing you know how bad a day that is.  It would mean no zyrtec for 7-10 days prior to testing (when I am already having a bad season?) and a gazillion pin pricks up and down my back.  When I was tested 4 years ago I felt like my back was on fire from all those things.  NO WAY, not doing it again.  We know what I am allergic to (easier to say what I'm NOT allergic to....that's horses!), she finally agreed to my side of things reluctantly.

Sooooo, guess I will be doing more yoga and short swims (he was okay with those) for a few more days.

It definitely sounds doable, Jack.  Give yourself adequate recovery after the marathon and you'd still have a good 5-6 months to prepare.

I haven't heard much about the course.  I would expect some decent hills

Slow down and yell.  I'd hope that works

Allergy testing does not sound fun.  I hope I never have to do that.

Hopefully the switching up of the inhalers does the trick for you....I know you are antsy to get back at it!

Glad to see that you and your docs were able to identify an appropriate and acceptable course of action--even if it did take a little arm twisting to make it work.  I'm sure you must be feeling so much more in control of the situation--that has to be a huge relief.    You're going to be back in the full swing of training in no time, I just know it.

I'm with you Neal...no deer around these parts so I can't be of much help.  Plenty of dogs though...and in my hood, it's usually the chihuahuas that come after me.  They really work themselves into a frenzy barking and growling and trying to chase me down.  I sometimes laugh out loud. Really? Tough guy?  There's at least one thing in this world that I can run faster than, and it's a barking chihuahua Laughing
