I also found this, that looks like fun:

http://www.pinhoti100.com/mountcheaha50k/

Yeah, you go ahead and have fun with that one.  ;-)

Yeah, good luck with that.  After you run 42k I think you'll have a different opinion as to what distance is "fun"...

The crazy runners that I know, say that the 50Ks don't hurt as much as a Marathon.  I call BS, but they contribute it to not running on concrete and asphalt.

I've had ideas of doing Pinhoti, but I think I'll wait until I'm in my 40s.

cornfed - 2010-09-14 9:18 AM Got the race report up.

Clif notes version:  In no way am I unhappy with my performance but do feel like I could have done better.  I was only pushing 252 average and 263 normalized on the bike and think I could have gone harder.  Thought it was best given the wet conditions to be conservative and I was very comfortable so I didn't want to risk blowing up on the run.  Similar thing happened on the run.  I probably could have held my goal pace (7:45/mi) if I had pushed myself some more.  Overall I'm very happy with my performance because I figured I would be coming in at 2:45 not 2:35.  Great experience.  I'm definately hooked.  The olympic distance is a lot of fun!

Nice race.  That race sounds like fun and a PITA at the same time.

That's a pretty accurate assessment.

I said I wasn't ready to think about next season until this race was over.  Now that it's in the distance past I've found myself starting to think a lot about next year.  I already signed up for one race because it's local and fills up really fast.  I found another that looks interesting.  It's an Oly in VA near my parents.  Looking at the results from this year it's relatively small (probably less than 100 people in my AG) but a really strong field.  Seems like it would be a lot of fun to do.  Only problem is that it's only 2-3 weeks after the race I'm already signed up for.  How much recovery time do you think I would need?  FWIW, I had planned to take it easy this week but feel so good today that I'm going to get out there tomorrow.

What's gong on this weekend?

I had a 5K this morning and ran it in 19:36.  Hopefully, I can get in a trainer ride during the Bama Game.

Today I've done a little bit of a run, some P90x, and a little extra pushup/situp junk. I fee like i'm slacking, even though it's better than nothing.

I may try to get down to the hotel gym for the recumbent bike ride or something else, but we'll see. I'm not really wanting to do too much, b/c I'm thinking of going for the longer run tomorrow. I'll just have to wait and see I guess.

Nice race results on that 5k this morning Mark! That's awesome!

Did my first century ride this morning. Kicked my butt.

I live in Raleigh, which is about 15 miles from the Duke campus. The Bama folks rolled out in force this week. New it would be a blowout. I hate Duke!! I bleed Carolina Blue!

Good job!

I've had a pretty slack week.  I had planned for a really light week for after my oly.  The timing worked out because there was a lot of BS going on at the firehouse this week (I'm a volunteer FF) but man am I starting to get restless.  I'm going to try to knock out a long run later today then get back to work next week.

I see a lot of recommendations in the tri talk forum about NOT trying to mount or dismount with your shoes already clipped in.  Check this out, ITU Pro women...

I think someone threw out some marbles.  That was alot of people going down.

I've never had any trouble during T1.  T2 is a different story.

Need you guys help with 2 items.

1. Help me mini taper this week. I'm racing augusta 70.3 (first HIM) next sunday. I'm also 8 weeks from B2B my "A" race this year. So I can't afford to miss alot of volume while tapering for augusta. However, my legs are currently jello, and i would prefer not to go into any race feeling as tired as I do right now. My initial thoughts were that I would just train as normal this week, then just take Friday and Staurday off. That may still be my best option, but I'm taking all suggestions.

2. Mark, help me with my HIM bike pacing. I've got it figured for full IM. (GO SLOW) But not quite sure how hard I should go for 70.3 races.

1.  What do you want out of this race?  Do you want to set a PR, or use it as a supported training/pacing workout?

2.  How are you pace the IM?  HR, Power, RPE, all 3

1. It's gonna be a PR as it's my first! What i'm really looking for out of the race is to test my nutrition and pacing strategy, however, I'd also like to finish sub 6 hours, and not be totally destroyed for 3 or 4 days after as i need to keep training.

2. All 3.

Good job!

I've had a pretty slack week.  I had planned for a really light week for after my oly.

I didn't plan for one, but ended up taking one after my Oly 10 days ago.  After the Oly I just trucked on with a run, a hard ride, etc.  On Friday I tried to go out and run and after two miles really felt the muscles that I had over done (on the bike) during the Oly.  Called it quits and basically did nothing this weekend.

Run today felt fine, despite the fact that it is again ridiculous out there.  90F at 6pm tonight.  Still held 8min/mile, so no real complaints here.

Last tri ride of the season tomorrow (sniff - I love those rides!).

2. All 3.

So your normal routine through Thursday.  Take Friday off or do a light swim.  Saturday, do 20 minutes of 2 of the 3 sports.

Race Day.
Swim - Survive.  From looking at your logs its your weak sport.  IM effort.

Bike - Take the first few miles easy.  Your HR will be jacked!  Let your heart rate drop.  People will be riding like a Bat out of Hell.  I promise,if you take it easy here and you'll catch some of these people between mile 45 and T2.

I pace my HIMs at the top of Zone 2 wattage(Coggan's).  Some people say ride harder, but I like to be able to run.  I've passed quite a few people on the run in both of my HIMs.

Practice your IM nutrition.

Run - This is the hardest area to give advice.  If your still running at mile 12, you've paced it right.  And the lure of getting off your feet will pull you through the last 1.1 miles.

Body Glide and Sunscreen are your friends!

Killer - fill us in on the splits when you get them.  I'm jealous of the rain - would have loved that in any of the ones I did this summer.

On my end I did a 35 mile bike and 8 mile run this weekend.  Today at 3pm it was 68!!!  Took off and ran for a good hour.  Wanted double digits, but my calf started to tweak, so cut it short.  Injury avoidance being paramount.

I have a 5k coming up in two weeks and want to get well under 21.  There will be 15k people there, but many more strollers and old ladies than runners.  Heck, they decided to stop having chip timing because it was too much of a pain, so I have to time myself.

swim 31:39
T1 4:37, guess I had a nap here. not sure what happened in T1
Bike 2:43:58  20.5mph
T2 3:39, had to hit portajohn. over hydrated
Run 2:04:21    9:30 pace.  Real happy with this, its faster than my stand alone half mary

Total: 5:28:12

I'll have a race report up in a few days. I met Brian from our group at registration. Nice guy!

My plan was to go easy on this race. Didn't work out that way. Swam easy, but at mile 30 of the bike I was still carrying over a 20 mph average, so I figured what the hell. Hammered away. Felt really great until mile 9 on the run. Got massive blisters from the wet socks. Started feeling a little light headed at mile 10 so I slowed considearably til mile 12. Then I could hear the noise from the finish chute, and I was able to pull the pace back down to about 9:20. Ran the full half, so that made me happy. Was planning to walk a few aid stations, but didnt cause I felt so good. My 10k split fom my watch was about 54 minutes, which is only a minute off my 10k PR, so you can tell I slowed down alot on the second half of the run.

Here's my race critique, cause I know a couple of you have mentioned maybe doing this race in the future. If you do, definitely stay at the Marriott. Host hotel. Made everything so much easier being there, for me and my wife who was spectating.
The swim is FAST! Downstream, point to point. I honestly had navigation issue's again, and I swam really easy. I wound up getting out of the main current and spent much of the swim trying to get back into it, and I still went 31 minutes. Jaques(sp) You would swim this in sub 25 minutes I bet.
Bike Course: we drove the bike course on Sat. evening and its flat for the 1st 12 miles, then it starts rolling. In the car the hills seemed tougher than they were. I expected to average around 19, but between the adrenaline and getting pulled around the course by the peleton I road with, my time was really good. Mark, you would prolly average 23 or better on this course. I honestly drafted my off. There was no way to avoid it. It rained really hard on the ride. I think I would have averaged 21 or better if not for the rain, and me constantly telling myself I needed to slow down.
Run course: Awesome! totally flat, and snaking thru downtown so its really spectator friendly. I saw my wife 5 times on the run course and she never had to move, she just turned around. She hung out with one of my buddies wives who has been to multiple IM events. She commented that this was the most spectator friendly of all that she had seen.
I heard they ran out of finisher medals later in the day. That sucks. I had no complaints. Loved this race, and may very well do it again.
