Meulen - 2011-03-20 11:32 AM QOTD. Aero helmet, it's already on my shortlist of things to buy. but I'm a geek anyway. I'm already prancing around in spandex, an aero helmet (or conehead helmets, as Anne calls them ) isn't that big of a deal for me to wear.

Yr totally one of those guys I silently made fun of in my head...until I started training for my first Tri! LOL (okay, maybe a little even now but at least I understand the benefits too)

I'm only a geek while I stand around in my spandex sipping coffee with all the other geeks. Once I start pedalling it's game on! and people can call me what they want, as long as I blow by them on the course!

Now THAT is the right attitude to have! Happy Birthday! I hope you get something awesome & geeky. LOL

Ok finally a QOTD: How "low" should low intensity workouts really be? I'm finding that even running 13-15 min miles (c'mon, that's practically walking speed!) still gets my heart rate up to 140 or more. Should I back off even more until my threshold increases? I still feel good at the end of a workout like I could go twice as long. Where should beginners draw the line?

libramom - 2011-03-19 6:09 PM A question for women: what style of running shorts do you run in and where do you buy them? I've never ran outside in the summer before so I don't have running shorts. I do have the skort I bought for the winter when I wore my compression pants so I can wear the skort, but when it gets really hot that won't be so good because of the material. I ask this question because I went shopping today specifically for shorts and every pair that I found and tried on barely covered my.... um...backside. I mean that's the style, like running in bikini bottoms, which I'd rather not do. And I went to a few stores too, not just one. I don't want long shorts or anything, but really they all looked like underwear. I see some nice ones in running magazines, but they're all like $90-$100. I'd buy some for like $30 maximum, but anything over that I think is silly for a pair of shorts.

Personally, I only run in compression shorts.  My favorite pair are the REI brand.  Having lost a lot of weight, things are a bit more jiggly than they should be.  The only way I feel comfortable is in the compression shorts.  I do have a lot of regular running shorts that I want to get rid of.  Most are a M, some may be a L, some seem to run a little small.  If they are your size I would be glad to send them to you to try out.  Some are brand new, that I bought before I knew that I didn't really like them!  If they would fit, and you want them, just let me know, no money out for you, and maybe they will work for you?

Karen

QOTD: IMO this is definitely subjective. I think the general answer for me is that I try to do something low intensity enough that I can recover from before my workout the following day. For me that means Keeping it under an hour and my HR usually under 150ish. Sometimes I can get away with a couple of short intervals if I shorten the workout length too. But what I can recover from may be different from what other people can recover from.

QOTD:   I manage a Pest Control Service Company.  My job is physical.  Climbing, Crawling, Hiking, Lifting, Yelling, Screaming.  Just kidding about the last two.  The first four are daily activities.  Sometimes when I get home from work, I am really tired.  It takes a lot of self motivation to train.

I have an addition to the list for biking.

Never assume the the guy parked on the right side of the street won't try a U turn with no notice or even looking for that matter.  Almost got creamed the other day.  Millimeters.  My mind had already accepted the fact that I would be crushed and not make my race.  Some how I made it by.  Still not sure how.  Was so close.  Went for a 25 mile bike ride that went perfect.  Almost get killed in the last 1/4 mile.

that reminds me! for running, never assume a driver making a right hand turn is looking at the sidewalk! I've landed on the hood of a car sooooooo many times walking downtown, and had many close calls running. It's gotten so bad I think Anne thinks it's not true! LOL I've been pretty lucky though to be hit by cars so many times and never gotten seriously injured.

I cannot say that I have ever had the problem that you have with those cars making right turns, but I do have this strange problem with running into deer when I am walking at night.  It started when I was a kid when I ran right into the side of a deer when we snuck out in the middle of the night, and it has happened several times since.  It just happened again last night when  I was walking the dogs.  The deer jumped right over the guard rail and hit my knee as it ran by.  And no, I do not live out in the country.  Actually, we are just about a mile from being in the city.

I think you should install a deer whistle on yourself! "only 1 whistle needed per vehicle" LOL Wow, that is really random. Although not so much for you, apparently!

Happy Birthday, Brian! Hope it's great.

Thanks, Karen! I'll try REI too. It takes me forever to find the perfect whatever it is that I'm looking for. Michael can testify that I've been known to run out of stores with tears in my eyes after hours of shopping without having bought a thing. That's why I hate shopping!!!....(unless it's shoe or hair- product shopping. If that's the case, I can out-shop anyone)!

Hey guys, I posted some pictures of the MTB build in my albums. This is just before and after and where I'm at now with this bike. Hopefully, I'll have it back together some time this weekend. If you feel like checking it out it's here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/photos/photo-thumbnail... I'll post more as I make some progress and maybe add some other pics of how it was built up the first time. ")

QOTD: Recovery workouts are something that I REALLY struggle with. I'm slowly learning (as a result of injury) that you don't have to race every workout. I used to be in the mindset that every workout had to be faster or longer or more intense than the one before. I definitely know now, since joining this group- that is NOT the case. Now I use my recovery workouts to really focus on my form and I've seen big results from that.

QOTD:  Music...

Who listens during workouts?

What are you listening to during workouts?  Not your favorite music, your favorite workout music!!  For me they are quite different...

List your Top 5 workout songs...

I am looking for a few upbeat songs to add to my "exercise playlist".  No Brittany Spears or Justin Bieber, pleae!!  I am old!
