Man, Harvey, you are an animal!  I'm incorporating some higher intensity into my training, too.  And climbing, lots of climbing.  Time for me to hit it!

I love climbing. Kills me but I love it. I've been playing around with Golden Cheetah and decided to do Threshold and Sufferfest this morning. I really want to have a good idea of how much power output I will be able to sustain for a 10 mile effort at Parris Island. I wasn't going to do this until after the race but I was worried about taking next week off for skiing. Not sure If I'm more excited about the ski trip in 3 days or the race in 17 days.

I still need to spend a little more time in the pool. My 100 time is coming back around and I am feeling very comfortable with the 500 m swim.

Hopefully will run/swim tomorrow.

I was a little disappointed with Cee-Me when I went last year. The main reason we went was my wife's cousin was one of the fashion models and we just happened to be in Atlanta on our way to the airport.

I guess everyone else is suffering in silence.

I was planning to take a rest day but my daughter woke me up for an early morning spin. I made it active recovery. Will try to swim at lunch. I am scheduled for a 4 hour bike ride tomorrow. Weather  doesn't look good. May be a miserable time on the trainer.

I'd hate to see you have to do a 4 hour ride on the trainer but it happens. I have a 4 plus hour ride Sunday but because the weather looked bad I had Shanks move it to Saturday where the weather looks like itll be better.

Yes I have been pretty busy lately. On the Ga forum we started this monthly goals thread (thecaptin started it), and its given me some extra oomph to nail down some bigger volume than I might have already done. There is plenty of upsde in my view but the downside is that I am feeling fatigued from a psychological and physiological standpoint. However, my hope is that rides like yesterday will carry me well in June at IMCDA.

I shoul'ved mention the hills discussion. I really think you get quite a lot of benefit from running and riding them. The more you do them, the easier they get. Its really crucial part of strength training , don't you agree?

What are you all up to? Any racing coming up? Any queries? Lets keep the thread hopping!

well... i learned how to shift
:P
(didn't realized i'd been camping out on the big ring only while i was riding around town)
oops!
but hey-- better to learn late than never!

now i REALLY need the last of the ice & salt to clear up so i can go riding around my neighbourhood again
(i still remember how THRILLED i was when i got my road bike)

the 1st time i took it out i just rode up & down hill about an hour (JUST b/c i could!!)

spring bike show in toronto this weekend
(hoping to pick up a cheap jersey maybe a pair of shorts & some tools and other necessities for maintenance)

STILL (however) waiting for my cycling shoes to be delivered from the states
guess that's the REAL price i'm paying for ordering super cheap & comfy shoes from the USA
but it'll be worth it when they get here

& the time trial was great!
(you were right-- 45 min it was)
and i'm officially in love with the computrainer system
wish i had one of my own
FANTASTIC experience
(i'd do it again this weekend if it were an option)

I had my first real training day in over a week yesterday. 75min bike and 60min swim. It felt good to be excercising again.  80min run today. Then a break and my first race this weekend (small local 1/2M).

Kate-  Awesome that you have a race already.  Color me jealous!  Is it indoor (must be, right?) and how long is it?  You may have said, but how many events are you doing this year?

I'd love to have a race in sight, but I am looking at early May for my first race of the season. For those of you who have done one, how are tris with an indoor swim?  The race in May has had to cancel the swim the last 2 years as conditions still stink here (the rescue boat capsized last year) and I was thinking of a local race that has a pool swim instead.

I have done a fair number of pools swim tris. A lot of people don't like them because the pool will quickly become congested and there can be a fair amount of physical contact. The contact doesn't bother me one bit. There is often more contact in some of the large waves I've been in. Just seed yourself accurately and swim your own race. I personally prefer open water swims because they are longer and more challenging due to the elements. Nothing tops the adrenaline rush of swimming with 2,000+ competitors on a 2.4 mile loop.

I like a pool tri and any other tri for that matter, once its started. For me, as I stated before, its the anticpatory anxiety that bugs me most. The tricks I found were to seed yourself properly and to not go hypoxic too early in the swim, keeping yourself in your normal pacing zone. Don't let others get you out of your mental space when they pass or are catching up. Just keep swimming as if its you and only you in the pool/lane. Essentially you need to keep your space to yourself as much as possible

Peter is right that those mass starts on an IM are a rush. They are quite scary, but so are your local races with wave starts where everyone is duking it out physically. At IMAZ I was scared for my life, where in IMFL I expected to get beat up and learned to push/nudge and guard myself so I could keep moving forward without taking my face out of the water. Once your face is up yor hips are even further down creating even more drag and killing you. I think I will be even better/more comfortable at IMCDA with that mentality (expecting the scrum rather than fearing it).

I am trying to make amends for yesterday's off day today. Its fourple Friday but I will be happy with the tri-fecta. What do you all have going for the weekend?

My brick today was a disaster. Was supposed to do 4 hours on the bike and 30' run. Ended up working most of the night. Worked later than expected this morning. Had planned to ride outside but the weather sucked. Buttered the boys and got on the trainer. Had plenty of drinks and nutrition available.  2 hours into the ride I get a frantic call from my wife. We fly out at 4 am. She was behind and the kids need to be picked up from school. I did get the bikes to the bike store for last minute tweaking. We should be ready to roll March 19. Expect a lot of skiing in my logs and hopefully some running.

I got a 52/3 brick in today.  Felt very strong the entire ride, even with the wind.  Seriously, will it ever die down?  Guess it's making me stronger.  The run was, eh, a bit tough.  Definitely need to practice more bricks because I had some tired legs.  It's pretty exciting to think that in a few months I will bike twice the distance of my ride and then run 9x the distance of my run...all after a 2.4 mile OWS.  No big deal Laughing

sorry aboiut your brick peter, but at least you have a great vacation coming up! have fun skiing! dont fret about that brick. plenty of time to get ready for long course and youve done some solid and consistent work.

WTG nerdjock! you keep this up, and finishing IMCDA will be no problem. even better that you are suffering now, as it will make you stronger for the more mild conditions we hopefully will get.

i missed my swim but got 37 miles on trainer and then some strength training. later i ran a 10k tempo. not what i was hoping for in terms of fourple friday, but ill take what i can get while trying to keep the fam happy.

Looks like I'm yhe only one left here. Forced rest day due to travel. Went down to the "lap Pool". It's 15m. 3 strokes flip, 3 strokes flip. Lots of snow falling so I will be cross training tomorrow.

Ran 8 miles today.  Wanted to swim but I was feeling lazy.

Have a fun trip, Peter!

peter, i bet if you laid down you could probably nearly touch both sides of the pool. hows the skiing? sounds like you got good snow.

solid work nerdjock! noticed you have been burning the candle at both ends with work and working out. great way to stick with it!

I am real taint-sore after another 4+ hr trainer ride due to rain. tagged on a 5.25 mi brick run too. this after a 10 mi run and 4100 yard swim yesterday and a big old friday too. treating myself to some ribs tonight (and I already hit up the homemade cookies and mcdonalds bacon cheeseburger deluxe meal my wife bought me). one of the biggest benefits of all this volume is eating whatever you want whenever you want!

how'd all your weekends go? we had a teammate run 100 miler for the first time ever and come second overall. i was thinking that no matter what i did i couldn't whine given what he had done.

The pool is not going to work. Being a fat old lazy guy, I flip turn with a good push. I can't get more then 3 strokes in before I flip again. I tried not pushing off the wall but I can't get back up to swimming speed before I'm at the wall again. There are nice treadmills here along with recumbent bikes.

The skiing is outrageous. I had a couple of turns in deep powder where I almost wished I had a snorkel. The snow is endless. It doesn't look like there will be much s/b/r this week but I will hit the s/s/s.

I will slack this week but I hope the rest of you make up the difference.

OOOWEEEE, Harv!  Sounds like you deserve those treats!  Very well done!  Hope that taint recovers.

Peter: sounds like a blast!

Only managed one hour on the drainer today.  Not very slayer-like, but manuscript writing got in the way.  The good news is I think I'm done with it.  At least this draft.

Looking forward to a big week.

Flip turns: Ugh! I need to figure them out. Every time I get started learning I get frustrated and just carry on swimming without them.

A snorkel in the snow sounds pretty whacked. That must be pretty awesome if you are a skiier.

nerdjock and I are getting to that critical point Friel talks about in his new book about your best triathlon (84 days before/12 weeks) where you have to be consistent and can't miss workouts and have to get your long ones in especially in our case with an IM in June. We need to keep the heat on. Just like you all.

Lets get a check in from Cali, Ga., Canada, Oz, Scotland, etc! Whats going on in other parts?

(have an hour planned in the pool tonight with my master's group... i'd better keep up!)

& STILL waiting on those darned shoes!!
(but pressing for some sort of answers from the store where i ordered them)
frustrating....
but it'll be worth it if they DO arrive in the mail before the snow melts!
(they had the same pair at the bike show in Toronto this weekend that were on "sale" for approx $220) Money mouth

AND! i talked my way into another free computrainer session!
STOKED for that!
(i just need my quads to ease up on me a bit)

hope you had fun at the chilly half mgalanter!!
(was definitely thinking of you guys yesterday)

FWIW I saw a thread on the main board about ice baths. I am very cold intolerant but wonder if anybody else uses the for recovery after miserably long runs?

26k is awesome. Keep it up

yeah nicruns! well done. and love it when my legs are barking mad haha!

im pretty crapp at recovery. i dont ice, cool down very well, or drink the protein shakes like i should. i do compress and rest though. i thought i saw Jorge saying ice baths hurt the body's ability to repair itself per some recent lab rat studies.  something about inhibiting inflamation that actually helps you heal?

how did mgalanter do? and lisab was having a pity party yesterday i noticed.

thanks!
(but i'm seriously considering skipping my planned jog tonight in favour of going to yoga....)

i was just reading a little blurb in a magazine about ice baths too...
(i'll admit-- i'm terrible & tend to run for warm epsom salt soaks instead)
DIDN'T WORK THOUGH!!

& i had a fantastic swim last night.
i was really dreading it (wasn't sure if the coach would be putting us through a kick based workout or not), but THANKFULLY we did endurance sets instead (800s)
phew.
felt great!
(but still apprehensive about what she'll do to us on Wednesday....)

& STILL no update on those darned shoes i ordered!
frustrating...
i just want to have them on my feet already
(i have the opportunity to do another free computrainer session... but i hoped to hold off on that UNTIL i got my pedals & shoes all put together!)

It must have been something to do with a full moon or some other astrological thing 'coz I had a great break-through swin last nite as well.  I swam my first sub-20min kilometer. After doing 1200m of warm-up drills.  Preceded by a 2hr. trainer ride. The day after a 22km run. I'm starting to feel a little better about my training progress.

This is the first year I'm actually training with a plan and starting in the Winter - typically I would just start training ad-hoc in the spring. I just hope this translates into improved results come race time.
