Capped off a 55 mile run week with a mid day 13 mile run that was just aweful. I know it wasn't normal, and that even in the much hotter race I'll likely feel better than I did yesterday...but man that sucked. Plan is to get some dedicated pool time in the next 2 weeks and keep up my regular ride schedule till bike drop off at TBT on the 15th...but take it real easy on the running front.

This morning was one of those mornings....
Had I been training for the local sprints this weekend, I would have slept in.
Instead, Louisville is in 19 days, so I got up and ran.

So glad I did!!

I don't know how I'm going to feel the next time I don't have a scheduled s,b,r. I'll probably do one or the other anyway.............

OK, special needs bag questions:

1) Where exactly is SN located on the run? I've checked the athlete guide and don't see it marked like it is on the bike course.

2) Could I just take my SN bag with me after I pick it up to hand off to family? For example, if I put in an extra pair of shoes and socks, and change into those at SN, could I put the old socks/shoes in the bag, run 100 yards down the road, and then give the bag to a family member so I don't lose $100+ dollars in gear? I don't want to violate the outside assistance rule and don't think giving the old gear to my sherpa would be a violation - it's not any different than taking off a pair of gloves and giving them to a stranger on the course.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Special needs is right before the turnaround on the run. I don't know the answer to the second part of your question, but it is something I am going to do this year. I am going to just toss my shoes to the side and have my wife pick them up. I wouldn't think this would violate the rule, since they are not "giving" you anything. Not sure what the actual assistance would be. If she was handing you new shoes, then that might be an issue. Having said all of that, I don't know how the rule is to truely be interpreted.

I threw my beloved pink and black arm warmers to my sister at the run turnaround during IMFL, no one said anything.

Technically, you cannot give anything to a spectator or toss something on the side of the road as it is considered abandoning equipment.

Indeed. It's USAT Rule 3.4(h) Abandoned Equipment. "No participant shall leave any equipment or personal gear on the race course. Any violation of this Section shall result in a variable time penalty. "

Looks like I'll have to turn myself in for a rule violation as I plan on changing shoes/socks/shirt and possibly ditching my Fuel Belt after the first lap of the run once it starts cooling off. I'm all about comfort as I don't have any speed. Thus, 6 Minutes won't make a difference to me in the grande scheme of things. I'm just too cheap to lose all that gear if I absolutely don't have to.

Thanks for the heads up.

You can send someone back to get them for the run. The bike is out in La Grange.

jmdraughn - 2012-08-08 9:36 AM Are we 100% sure we will not get of Special Needs bags back?

That is what the athlete guide states.  Page 10:  "Do NOT place anything of value in your special needs bags as they will NOT be returned".

I do not remember a chance to pick them up before. I put stuff in there that I did not care to get back.

Hmmm.  According to the rule, you can't leave it on the race course..but suppose you threw it in the trash can, and your wife happened to be standing right there next to it?  I think you should be OK, but I am not an official.

Yeah, I've reread the rule and put my thinking cap on and think that since the rule regarding abandoning equipment specifically says, "No participant shall leave any equipment or personal gear on the race course" I am ok by placing it on the sidewalk for my wife to pick up. Might be a hyper-technical reading but I just don't want to lose my gear.

In 2010 we got them back.  Recently at IMFL and IMSG they were also returned.  If they are not  picked up then contents are donated.

I could be wrong but I believe you are talking about the gear bags. The Resource bags are not returned as far as I know. But as my wife says I can be wrong

At both CdA and AZ last year you could get them back.  However...they were pretty much in just a huge pile and you had to dig for them on your own.

So I was just reading the athlete guide and noticed that no compression wear is supposed to be worn on the swim. I guess this means I can't wear my 2xu compression Tri shorts on the swim?

Not sure that's how I'd interept... I think it's referring to the no clothing covering arms below shoulder or leg below knee. I have to believe it's talking about calf sleeves. Seems like all tri shorts are compression to some extent. Hard to imagine how they would police it if they were checking everyone's tri shorts. I am planning on wearing my tri shorts.

Both my wife and I have come down with chest colds    She got it first (last week) and was forced to miss out on our her longest long run.  Now this week I've got it.

Timing could be worse...but certainly could be better!  I was really only planning on a 2 week taper but since it's in my chest I'm being forced to take some time off this week.   Key workouts this week was supposed to be a 80-90 mile ride, 4,000 yard swim and 12 mile run but not sure I'll be able to get any of them in.

Sorry - just throwing my own little pity party!

Got them back when i did CDA in 2006, and at IMSG this year they were perfectly in numerical order and all you had to do was tell someone your number and they went and picked it up for you.
