A key to a strong kick is a flexible ankle. You got to work on that ankle flexibility. Fins can help that as well.tasr - 2013-03-07 11:00 AM Hey all, About the leg/foot cramping thing. That use to happen to me years ago when I first started fitness swimming. Not often but it happened more so on hard swims. So I think for the most part it is a conditioning thing. I mean how many of you cramping are just starting out or back to some swim fitness? There are other reasons such as electrolytes or vitamin deficiencies, but I think you guy would have the same issues biking and running. I can see that for calf cramps, but foot cramps? Wondering if it has anything to do with flexibility? I know my ankles are fairly inflexible after so many years of running. Foot cramps are uniquely painful. I see other people in the pool suddenly stop and I know exactly what's happening. Just bought a pair of TYR burners, I have this other issue with bending my knees too much and not kicking from the hip enough. Heading to the pool in about 15 minutes. Running = Just keep the legs turning over Biking = Just keep pedaling circles Swimming = complicated! |

Expert 701 Caratunk, Maine | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread BernardDogs - 2013-03-07 1:16 PM Oh hey ... remember me? I'm now on 3 weeks of no workouts. I just didn't while in Mexico, and have been sidelined by Giardia since then. Nasty little bugger. I haven't been wanting to be more than a few minutes from a bathroom (preferably a few steps). It was mis-diagnosed last week and I was told to just let it run its course. Antibiotics now, so hopefully I'll be back at it this weekend. I feel like I'm really missing some quality and key workouts, but am hopeful that my fitness level going into it will allow for a relatively quick bounce-back. Plenty of time. Between that and the sh!tstorm I walked into back at work, I've been scarce around these parts.
OUCH! That sucks. Hope you feel better soon - just don't push too hard too early, it could lead to more missed time. You totally have plenty of time to get quality workouts in once you get better. Sounds like you were pretty fit before too, so you will totally bounce back. Mandy |

Master 1460 Burlington, Vermont | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread BrianRunsPhilly Wow, Troy, and I thought the flu was bad! Get better soon, that sounds very nasty. It's an interesting situation. I can function just fine ... still going to work, I don't have a fever (headaches, though), and I keep my appetite. It just runs right through and I can't trust a fart. Not at all. I've got a bathroom steps from my bike set up, but I would be on/off too much to really get anything worthwhile going. I've been very deliberate about hydration, and that really helps the mood. I've been told the antibiotics should take hold pretty quickly. I can't wait. |

That's miserable, even if there's no other symptoms. I suppose you could do very short bike/run(s) bricks Hydration is really key. You taking electrolytes? What about a multivitamin? Giardia can cause issues with absorption of vitamins, especially A and B12. You can't really OD on B12, so it might not hurt to take a supplement, especially before you get back to training. |

Running = Just keep the legs turning over Biking = Just keep pedaling circles Swimming = complicated! Practice not bending your knees by kicking on your back. Arms extended in the streamline position squeezing against your ears. Kick from the hip/upper leg focus on the top of your foot coming to the surface of the water. Like punting a football, knees should not break the surface. I was a self taught swimmer you can do it! |

...That sounds like my last Ironman.... Ha! Maybe I can call this training? Only if you "log" it, but doesn't sound like you will be doing that for a while yet... It really is not fair that you have simultaneous sh*t storms going on either... Sorry, it really is hard to resist. Seriously, welcome back, BernardDogs - if you absolutely have to be down for a bit, now is an ok time for it. You will be back before you know it and we have plenty of time left. 142 days to be exact, according to manfarr1974. |

I think I am a touch fatigued, and trying to ease up on some of the workouts/perhaps rest to catch up. Hopefully the snow is a non-event for the Boston burbs. On the plus side, I am 10 lbs down in wgt thus far; I'll take that! How is everyone staying motivated? I gotta say, I am running out of Netflix! When is your next recovery week? What plan are you following? I am on Fink; I believe week 10 (blending a touch!). Rest is week after next; my body seems to like a three week cycle a bit better than four, but then again, who's doesn't! I really think it is the lack of outside time, due to the weather up here. Given all the salt/sand on the road, it'll be a while for the bike, methinks. Enough whining; felt better today, and I definitely have been backing off a bit this week to avoid burn out. Just have to watch the IMLP Full Circle, and see some fool running with a sling on his arm ... Thanks all for your support! |

Master 2912 ...at home in The ATL | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Our weekend is looking very good, sunny, mid 60s, and NO WIND. Yesterday I put our our TT bikes in the work stands and started getting them tuned up. Mine actually still had my race numbers from 2012 IMLP on it and the top tube/forks were covered in orange Perform - yeah, yeah, I know. It looks like this weekend will be our last road bike ride for a while, other than the occasional group ride and century. Come Monday, Tri/TT season officially starts at our house... |
