Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED I may do the swim on Friday instead of Thursday anyway. That gives me one more day to get rid of this cough. I fear it may stick around for a couple weeks because I am an asthmatic. One of today's tasks is to look for deals on fluid trainers. My trainer sucks! |

Extreme Veteran 863 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED karen26.2 - 2013-01-08 4:07 PM Karen, I have not seen the same success that Jen and Scott and Carrie have seen either. I totally understand how frustrating it is to not see those gains. When Kelly says that medications can interfere I think I am one of the people she is referring to. I just decreased one of my medications to see if that has any effect. I hope that we both start to see success soon.kaburns1214 - 2013-01-08 10:42 AM uhcoog - 2013-01-08 10:35 AM ccmpsyd - 2013-01-08 8:53 AM I've never trained with anything but RPE. I will be using HRM and power soon and I must say I am not thrilled with the prospects of training in HR zones etc because I anticipate that I will be going really really slowly, which will be really really humbling. You will be going very slowly, and you will hate it at first. It does get better I promise. Generally there is a 4 - 8 week adjust period where you get used to training by HR, its going to feel super slow and frustrating but it will get easier (and much faster) in time. The cool thing that starts to happen is that your pace will start to drop for all of zones. This makes it easy to see and measure progress because your pace at X HR will decline over time. Why would a person (me) not see improvement? A long running background and already tapped out on potential? Age? I know this works for most people, I hear about it from folks in this group as well as tranining buddies, but I have not seen any improvement. Being a slower runner you would think the gains would be more noticable than someone who is faster. It's just frustrating for me and I don't get it. |

Not sure where that name comes from but either way it was a good workout. Hoping to get in a adjustment to my bike fit this Friday with my new saddle and have them adjust a couple of other things on the bars. Tomorrow is the 3x800 test. Hopefully this time I get all three 800s in. Scott, is the swim with the new paddles? |

Having a little swelling in that surgicvally repaired nerve area the last two days, even with the light spinning I was doing. So I am going to take the rest of the week off. I can't come back too soon, and risk another whole season. I need to get that in my thick head.

ETA: I will still hit the gym for some upper body circuits this afternoon So important. Taking extra weeks in Janaury to let your body heal will not affect your race performance in August. Ignoring the fact tht your body needs to heal, pushing it and Janaury and being forced to take off weeks in May, June and July will affect your race performance in August. Take the time to heal now and remember your A race is Timberman. |

Scott, I know you are doing a 1/2 marathon in March. I also notice that you bike a lot. Are you biking less as you have been training for the HM, are you going to cut out biking at all as the race approaches? Reason I ask is my HM is this weekend and I have been doing nothing but run and swim since appx Sept in prep for the race. The times I did bike and ran, my legs were kind of heavy - I say that with the caveat that I have not really trained on the bike at all - so I decided just to focus on run. |

The question really ends up being what is your target race. I have a HM on the 27th, but my A race is IMTX. My bike time is going up as such. If the goal race was Disney than you're in good shape, if it was an early long course tri maybe you should have been on the bike. |

The times I did bike and ran, my legs were kind of heavy - I say that with the caveat that I have not really trained on the bike at all - so I decided just to focus on run. My HM in March in the big scheme of things means very little to me. If I was serious about it I would be much more run focused. That race is sort of my kick off the season and see what I can do race. The first year this was my first HM and I did 1:59:56. Last year I did it in 1:46:53. So I took a full minute per mile off and that was with a calf pull and it was 30 degrees warmer out. So this I'll see where I'm at but I'd like to go sub 1:40 but not enough to focus on it. My HIMs are the events I'm focusing on thus the higher percentage of biking. A friend tried to talk me into a full marathon but I didn't want to get pulled in too many directions. |

They're just numbers Carrie. There is no pass or fail. Just using the numbers to make adjustments so that you get the most out of your training going forward. I think the word "test" should be removed or something. |

Veteran 580 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED I grew up playing lacrosse and played in college. The sprints we did before and after practice were insane. I dreaded hearing the whistle and the coach saying "on the end line." BUT...after having recently done a 1x1000 swim test and reading about people's 3x800, 3x900 etc, the aforementioned sprints in college pale in comparison, as does the dread that I experienced. |
