One of your earlier post mentioned something about going to bed at 1... The bedtime was a big tip off that you might be a bit younger than the majority of us in the group..

My kids are 23 and 21. The 23 year old has never stayed up late. Last time the 21 year old was home on break we had to have a chat about his going to bed when I was getting up for my first workout of the day.. Funny story- All of his college friends were hanging out at the house one night.  The next day I asked him when they went home. He said 4 because they knew I'd be getting up soon.. lol..

Congrats on your internship!!

Yeah the weekend is here! Swam after work and left the pool starving. Found a strawberry jelly packet in the car and almost sucked it down like a GU. Went and got a huge hamburger and french fries and inhaled in the the parking lot.. Nice.. Now I'm enjoying a few beers.. No wonder I can't lose weight..

It's the end of the month. Post your totals for January. January was a good month. Lots of slow miles on swim/bike/run. I'm actually surprised that the bike mileage was so low for the amount of time on the bike. Weird.. Wonder if something was entered wrong in training log. Swim and run don't surprise me as it's been a slow building month..

Swim: 17h 35m - 48300 Yd
Bike: 15h 06m - 254.68 Mi

Run: 15h 36m 53s - 121.75 M

January Totals:

Swim: 6h 00m - 16286M
Bike: 19h 07m 09s - 344.29 Mi
Run: 8h 09m 50s - 56.64 Mi

These are solid numbers that I'm happy with for January. I've definitely eased up on the run toward the end of this month since I'm doing the Tour of Sufferlandria, but I was feeling good about my run coming into training season. I'm also lower on swimming total, but I think a lot more of those meters are quality training, rather than just me flapping around in the pool like last year. Overall, I'm feeling stronger in all three disciplines coming out of the off-season than I did going into it, which is a good feeling.

Also, I'm one day away from the end of the Tour! Today wasn't actually that bad; 1:44 on the trainer, but it wasn't the all-out torture that yesterday was. The second workout had a 20-minute interval with a 273 NP average, which was 20 minutes out of the two-hour total workout. I just about fell apart. However, one more hour of sprint workouts tomorrow morning and I can say that I completed the Tour, which is more than I thought I'd be able to do!

Bike: 34.09 miles; 2:39:30
Run: 1.9 miles; 00:31:56

Down with injury for most of the month on the run and got iced out this last week, so I didn't get very far on the workouts. Here's hoping for a better February!

Swim         18h 15m          60550 yards

Bike           27h  04m         557.53 miles

Run             4h  08m         28.95 miles

Strength      3h 55m

Turned out to be a bike/swim focus since I was giving my calf a rest. Not the balance I would like but my biggest monthly swim and bike volume ever I think. Saw solid gains on the bike. Hard to say with the swim. Endurance has certainly improved but not sure speed has improved much. Hoping to see the run bump up steadily over the next month.

Good work everyone.

Bike: 15h 30m - 263.84 Mi
Run:  16h 15m - 112.92 Mi

Well, at least I managed to color every day of the month in the calendar... Big month of running (for me) -- most mileage since high school. Biking and swimming purposely tailed off a bit.

Swim 7750.00 yards 5h 15m
Bike 25.44 miles 1h 17m 02s
Run 41.18 miles 6h 54m 29s

Fairly solid month for me too. Bike is low because I didn't have access to a bike until last week and I'm still waiting on my shoes to arrive. I'm very happy with my swim progress. That is definitely my weakest sport but I was able to do a solid 500yds no rest at the end of yesterday's swim and when I ended I felt like I could have done more. That made me very happy.

That said, Feb. looks like it will be a big month. I'm going into the big phases of base training and some weeks coming up will be 9hrs of training. Nothing like like building the base! So we will see how things go.

Also, side note on life: I've got an interview on Tuesday to work as a bike technician. They know the only experience I have is working on my own bike, but they are willing to train me... So I'm excited!

My miles for January were pretty nonexistant. I had such big plans for the winter months.

Ran my 2.5 miles today...supposed to get 3 days in before my next appt so we can see where we are. I'm trying to be a 'good girl' with regards to the recovery plan, but it killed me to not go another few miles. Had a little pain on the downhills (back of knee/upper calf), so I made sure to slow down, increase my turnover, shorten the stride and that seemed to help. Going uphill feels really good. Go figure!

Temperatures in the 60s tomorrow. What a change from the 14 degrees we had in Georgia a few nights this past week. The last bit of snow will melt today.

Reasonable month for me.  With an eye on Boston my run is starting to increase in volume.  Really liking my Master's swim class.  February should be more of the same!

Swim:  14h 15m

Bike: 10h 40m 186Miles

Run:  22h 56m  148Miles

January for me:

Swim: 14h 00m - 45450 Yd

Bike: 17h 36m - 401.04 Mi

Run: 12h 26m 35s - 91.85 Mi

Interesting comment about consistency and "streaking." I had a multiple (5?) year streak of running greater than 100 miles per month. I think it was my New Years plan in 2009 that I run at least 100 miles/month for the whole year. I made it all of that year and just kept it going...... until....... August of 2013 I hurt myself and for the first time in long time I didn't make 100 miles, ending the streak. The strange thing is that since then I have several months of not running 100 miles. After almost 5 years of at least 100 miles/month. Since the streak was broken I don't feel the same urgency. I was looking at my mileage for January and calculating how much I had to run to get to 100. I know, without a doubt, that I would have gone out and put in the miles if the streak were still alive.

Maybe it is time to commit to starting it back up.

Nice monthly totals for the group.

Jason, I'm surprised that you weren't out late last night trying to get those last 9 miles in.

I'm looking for some new post workout recovery snack ideas. Ideas?

The workout schedule for next week is going to require focused nutrition and fueling. It's the time of year when I need to start back to a focused nutrition plan. Otherwise the workouts will start to suffer. So far I have a list of portables and meals from the Feed Zone cookbook for next week. Things tend to work best when I pre-cook and plan meals for the week. Otherwise like last week there is no telling what I might eat after a workout.

I also need to lose about 5 pounds within the next 2 months while fueling workouts properly. Anyone interested in a weekly weigh in? I'm currently at 128 (which can go up or down depending on what I ate and or drank/beer the night before. I would like to be back at race weight 123 by April 6th- Galveston HIM.

January: 88 miles, 18 hours. All on the run. Time to get back to the other disciplines.

Rene- I'm down with the weekly weigh ins. I need some accountability. I'll weigh in tomorrow morning. Tonight we feast!

Off to a great start for February. I dropped 6.6 miles out on the bike.

But guess what ya'll: IT WASN'T ON A GYM BIKE! :D

The roads were clear and the weather was great, so I took off on the first legit ride on the bike. The last ride should have been the first, but a chain issue preempted that plan 1/3 of a mile in.

First half, went pretty good. After a water break at the 2.5 mile mark in a pit within my parking lot that almost caused me to fall twice trying to remount my bike, the second half kicked off and I really let loose. Times I was seeing in the gym began to show up on my splits and I even got down to a 2:00 split on my last half mile. I was going to climb the ranks from 6 to 8 miles, but I'm starting to think that I might be able to get away with working for an hour at a time and seeing where things land.

And yes, that was awesome. Clip-in shoes may be in my near future on Valentine's Day when I head back home; thinking they'll be needed sooner than I anticipated.

EDIT: Rene - I'm definitely interested; just don't grimace when you see my numbers ya'll.

EDIT #2: Also have a question for ya'll. After having my iPhone tracking my efforts in my jersey pocket, I noticed upon pulling it out that it was drenched in sweat, which made it very difficult to operate effectively. I'm currently looking around for a solid bike mount for the IPhone 5S and wanted to know if any of ya'll know of any good options. Several manufacturers have been looked at, including LifeProof, but there has been some concern universally over the iPhone coming loose from the case or being scratched if it's in a sealed case according to the reviews.

Great swim and bike session with my training buddies Saturday, and this morning was and crazy hard (for me) 8.2 trail run. Had a great time and ran it as hard as I could. I had none left when I was done!

January:
Swim: 30m - 1000 M
Bike: 3h 49m - 46.7 Mi
Run: 14h 30m 57s - 70.69 Mi

This month I'm kicking the biking and swimming up a few notches, for sure!!

Rene: I'm down for a monthly weigh in. I keep hearing that it'll be easier for me, and I'll go a little faster if I can drop a few pounds.

Happy February!

January totals were pretty slim, except on the bike due to the Tour of Sufferlandria.

Swimming - 8450yards
Biking - 320 miles
Running - 26.2 miles
Strength - 2hr 50 minutes.

Running and swimming took a major hit. I know what needs work so I just need to do it. I just did/attempted a run this morning although my legs are a bit mushy after the ToS. Figured today might get ugly with food so good to get something in early then maybe a strength session later tonight because God knows I ain't touching that bike today.

I'm in for the weekly weigh in.  Should we start tomorrow?  Part of the diet overhaul/weight loss includes giving up artificial sweeteners.

One of my favorite post workout snacks is Greek yogurt with apple and cinnamon mixed in.  So yummy!

Bryan-its not ideal but you could put your iphone in a ziplock until you find a permanent solution. Thats what I do when I need to to take it to the pool with me. Does fine at the end of the lane.....wouldn't want to submerge it that way but does fine with light moisture.

Here is an app for a "Pace Clock" that I sometimes use at the pool for long continuous swims or if the deck clock is broken. I'll put the phone (in the handy ziplock),  at the end of my lane, propped up by the pull buoy so its easy to check periodically. Rarely do long continuous swims but its a cool app.https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pace-clock/id465060982?mt=8iPhone Screenshot 1

Easy day for me with a short run and maybe some strength work.

For those group members that are lurking and following along....chime in and let us know how you are doing.

OK, so first month totals are:

Swim: 2h 40m - 2700Yd
Bike: 28h 47m 02s - 199.52 Mi (390+ miles adjusted for days w/o sensor at conservative 13.7 MPH)
Run: 1h 21m 01s - 8.56 Mi

A lot of my early biking was before I had the cadence/speed sensor for my bike so I didn't even estimate so I'm not really sure on mileage.

Big focus for February will be seriously increasing swim volume and slowly ramping up run while continuing to lose the weight that I have been working so hard for 20 years to gain. So, with that being said Rene's post on weigh in's is very timely for me and i will gladly participate. I am down from 220+ last summer to about 185 now (I'll weigh in later and post for thread purposes...maybe after super bowl ). I feel like I will need to be down to under 150 by August for HIM. I feel like weight will come off pretty quickly with the types of volume I'm starting to put in and that will be of great benefit to my knee, I am sure.

My other big focus for February is scheduling and setting up my workouts. I have been getting them in but pretty much just whenever I can. I also haven't been doing anything from a core strengthening standpoint or focusing on recovery items like foam rolling and stretching. Today is my last long ride for a week or so as my bike volume in my base building plan goes way down for a recovery week next week. I will take that opportunity to really focus on my scheduling and balancing my workouts and recovery items.

Have a great day everyone!

We can weigh in on Monday's if that works for everyone.

I'm going back on the beer ban (no beer in the house) until after the HIM in April. Which means I'll have to drink all of the beer that is still in the house tonight during the Super Bowl.

  • I approve of this plan!! In fact I'm going to pick up a couple nice IPA's for during the game tonight. Have definitely cut way back on the beer consumption but I told my wife that after these two back to back 2 hour rides I will have earned a couple brews during the game. Weigh in tomorrow will work for me. I am sure I'll gain a couple pounds in guacamole and beer tonight.

Was able to run back to back days this weekend and I upped today's run to a whopping 2.7 miles. Some high calf issues during a few parts of the run, so I'll address that with the physio on Wednesday. The good news, though, is that I actually ran two days in a row. Plus, 2.7 miles is better than 0.0 miles, right?

What's interesting is that I still remember quite clearly when I decided that I wanted to become a runner. That first time I actually ran 3 miles straight was such a joyous occasion. It was sheer agony, too. I thought I was going to die. To think now that 2.7 seems like such a miniscule run is kind of funny.

Hoping to get back into some sort of swim/bike/run schedule after this week's appointment. I just have to keep restraining myself and keep my eye on the prize. My goal is a sub 6 hour HIM in Augusta in September. I need to make sure I start the season without the nagging issues that can end a season. A bum wheel in February won't help me to that goal.

    Go Broncos!!!!!!!!!

It's Monday here and I don't have to worry about Super Bowl eating since I don't follow football, so I'll weight in now:

    Start: 147.2
    Feb goal: -6 lbs.

1200m on the training schedule today!

Hey Gang. I won an AudioFlood Waterproof ipod shuffle from BT. In January they gave away 5 of them. You got an entry for each gear review you submitted. I have a waterproof shuffle now but it has been pretty spotty since my bike wreck last May. I don't swim with it but do like to run with music so got the waterproof model to last through the humidity and sweat of the Summers down here

This month they are giving away several pair of "Lava Pants." Kind of like a wetsuit from the waist down. I have the ROKA Sim shorts which are similar. A good tool to use in the pool to get the feel of body position in a wetsuit without the heat of a fullsuit in the pool. They are also great to use when your legs are still trashed from a previous workout but you need to get a swim workout in.

Not too charged up about the game but think I will be pulling for the Seahawks....not sure why. I'm fine with Denver winning and like Manning.......kind of tired of hearing "Omaha" though.

The start of the race I had the jitters. I was watching the other age groups start as they seeded the swim with over 1000 participants.
