Hey cool.  The local paper was taking pics at the race Saturday and they got ONE upclose pic of a swimmer.  That swimmer happened to be me.

4.4 miles
It was the realllly big one I've been training for pretty much since October when I started practicing for the 3 mile qualifier. I'm glad it's over, but I had a blast. Such an awesome race.

That truly is amazing. I apologize but I thought your big race was much later in the year. My bad. Nevertheless, great job!!

Now onto marathon training, right??

speaking of swimming, the triathlon that I did over the weekend was in a 50-55 degree water. I tried out the water on Friday evening before the race and it was physically painful to my head. It felt like my brain was exposed. I then went and bough a neoprene cap at the expo which helped tremendously (I am about 1/10 as tough as Grace). On the way to the race the temperature (air) was 38 degrees.

It was a fun race, though and the highest caliber triathlon I have ever been to with big pro and elite divisions. I PRd (2:12 for olympic), but the bike course was about 1.5 miles short (no one really has to know about that, though).

That is insane. I'd rather swim 4.4 miles in 72 water than 1k in 55 anyyyytime.

55?  Was there ice in the water?

Well, I've started the process of getting a tri bike.  I'm looking and bidding on frames, trying to find a QROO fork, frame, and seat post.  Then I think I'm going to build it up with SRAM, just to be different.

It really wasn't absolutely horrible with neoprene cap on.

I have a QR kilo that I got used last year. I would sell it to you just to see you ride it. You are tall right? This frame is a small so you could sit on the seat and be flat-footed on the ground. I got a new bike a few weeks ago. I will make you try and guess what kind. I will give you a hint: it only comes in black and rhymes with "melt zee-felve".

Honestly, I am not blowing smoke, 1.5k in cold water is much, much easier than 4.4 miles. At 4.4 miles there would be a real possibility that I could drown.

Negative.  I'm 5'9"

A B12!  With the rear calipers all tucked away by the crank?  Some people may call you crazy, but the B12 is hell of a lot of bike for that price.  It's really a pretty insane deal.

IT'S BACK!!!!

How's your knee? As you know I had a knee problem as well, but apparently not as serious. I thought it was serious, but luckily my doctor actually specializes in geriatrics and knew it was just tendonitis/bursitis or whatever. I took roughly 10,000 advil over two weeks and iced it religiously and I am not having any problems.

I did an HIM last weekend that got turned into a duathlon because the water was rough. WTF???

Hope everything is going well with everyone!!!

Hey great idea, Grace.

I have nothing to report. I moved again (I swear, I just moved last summer) and I spent the last few months looking for a new job. My life is about to calm down and I am going to join a Master's club just up the street. I am really looking forward to that.

Paul sorry about the water at your HIM? Do you have another one planned?

I hope everyone is having a good summer!!!

I guess I logged back in just in time for catch-up :-) I've been traveling for the past 6 weeks or so and backpacking & hiking for a month now. But as of friday we're in Portland and looking for jobs, and newly engaged :-) and I am getting seriously back into marathon training- and hoping that tons of hiking & backpacking translates into something since I haven't been able to run in a few weeks!

Hope everyone is enjoying the summer!!

Paul- so sorry to hear about your HIM! That's so lame. I love the swim leg (being a swimmer) so I'd be realllly bummed if that got cancelled.

I moved to DC and am looking for full-time jobs for when my internship is over.

My knee is better, I didn't go back to the doc to get cleared but I am starting to use it now- I was completely avoiding stairs and walking really as little as possible while living in the city. I have missed 3 races that I had planned now, and am missing an open water swim race that I accidentally signed up for that was during my uncle's wedding.

Candace- let me know how the masters program goes. I've seen the group that practiced at my college pool, and I'd like to know if that was a typical program or not.

Kerry- CONGRATS on the engagement!! So exciting!

Hope everyones summers are going. Are any of you in an area tri club? I am thinking about joining the DC one so I can find a place to swim and have training friends- much harder now that I am off campus.

I was telling Paul that I was in a car accident 4 days after my first Tri on July 4th. I had to take 3 solid weeks off of training and start back at it slowly.
I finished my 2nd Tri last weekend (sprint) and it went alot beter then the first. 9/20 in the age group. I was really winded and got real bad cramps during the run but pushed on to the end.
From the accident only my knees are still sore ( hit the dash and cut open my right knee).
I missed my A race for the year (an oly tri ) I have rebooked it for Sept 6 08. So the training is really starting to gear up again. I`m finding it hard cause I`m not where I want to be.
I also missed a 1/2 marathon and I will be doing one or two more in Sept/Oct.

Wow!  It's alive!  Nice idea, Grace.  Sux about the knee.  Be extremely careful with it, don't want it to turn into something worse.  Good luck on the job hunt.  What sort of position are you trying to land?  You never know if any of us might have a random contact or something.

Paul, that is lame about your HIM.  Good news on your knee as well as IMW is coming up.  Let us know your bib number when you get it so we can track ya.

Hooray for swimming, Candace!  I'm about to join a masters club, too.  Didn't even know there was one around here, but I'm pumped.

Congrats on the engagement, Kerry!  Good luck on the job hunt as well!

Dang, Nathan.  Glad to hear your ok.  I know you can't wait to get back to racing.  Good luck to you!

As for me?  Grace will be proud to know that I finished in the top 10% of the swim in each tri I did this year  Although I did one half mile swim in 10:20 and one in 15:30.  Both were mismeasured, but I'm just gonna say the 10:20 was more accurate.  I did my last tri of the year on August 2nd and it went pretty well.  Temps were getting into the high 90s by the time I was finishing, though.  I did throw one more half marathon in as well and put up a PR.  I'm still engaged, too  She's got the thing pretty much planned, and I've got the honeymoon booked.  November 15th is getting here fast!  Oh, and we finally got the local tri club back up and running.  I'm the head of the training comittee...hah!  Our jersey proofs come in Friday, too!  Watch out for the Mississippi Heat!

And... I built a new bike, because I'm an addict.  Her name is Marie, and she's my baby that I'm taking to New Orleans in April.

I've been tapering for months
I started running a few times a week but never put it on my log here. I'm trying to learn to run for fun. I found a trail near my house that hooks up to Rock Creek Park, and it's very cross country-esque with logs and stairs and creeks and stuff, so that's fun. Not to mention hills
I also got a job and am working 84 hours a week on a congressional campaign. So not much time for anything else.

How'd the race go that you were tapering for?
