Success!! Race went very well, and even better than expected for much of it. The Galloway 9/1 really worked well. The first 8 miles of the race I was feeling great - mile markers were coming up faster than I expected. Did start to feel a bit tired after that, and mile 11 to 12.5 were a grind, and slow. The last .1 I tried to sprint in but my legs were like 2 pieces of rubber over which I seemed to have little control, so I backed off and just did a normal run it. Felt great to finish! Beautiful course along the ocean for much of the first 1/2. Organized, lots of police, signs, spectators, water, etc. Weather was clear blue sky & sun, but it was getting really hot the last couple of miles. And I forgot my hat, so no protection there, and sweat was dripping in my face all day. Final time according to my watch was 2:09:44. Not setting any records, but today was about finishing, gaining some confidence in going the distance, and checking my fitness. Overall, I feel good about it all.

Now, I'm going to have a beer and a nap

Very nicely done, Mike! I have enjoyed tremendous success myself in years past with the run/walk strategy.

Got my HM done as well - perfect weather and I love this course. Went 1:35:10, with which I am thrilled as I just trained through it with a relatively tough week. Really thought I would be closer to 1:40+.

Wish I could get the beer and a nap myself, but I am afraid yard work awaits - I am afraid our neighbors are about to to start circulating a petition to have our house condemned. It must truly STINK to live next door to a couple who are both training for Ironman...

Congratulations to both of you, brilliants results and you both sound happy and like you had a lot of fun!  I know what you mean about the yard but with me it's the house.  Whenever I vacuum, the Munchkins asks if we're having visitors.

Great race results guys! Nice job.

A nap sounds good to me 'bout now. I'm stunned at how tired this training is making me.

1:35? wow! I was still chugging along mile 10 or so when that time went by the boards in my race.

Guy in masters swim class this AM came in second overall in my race yesterday. Ran a 1:15.

Overall feeling good this AM, and the swim class today was a great recovery workout.

This won't be my last half! It was quite fun, and I'm looking to do more in the future.

a big THANK YOU to everyone here for your support leading up to this!! It was a big help!

Congrats on the races! Nice pay off for hard training.

First open road ride yesterday. Very windy but such a beautiful day here. I am happy to report no bail outs with the shoes/pedals. No problem getting un-clipped. Although, that activity now adds more to the stopping routine: pedal to higher gear, brake, wonder what that car behind me is going to do, unclip, stop. One thing I noticed during my ride is that there are a lot of folks around here that don't close their mail boxes.

Weather here is forcast to be beautiful all week. I'm really hoping to get my bike out on the road and ride for real.

Need a new rear tire as I sacrificed my last one to the great bike trainer god in the basement.

I almost didn't go swimming in the river  this morning; I had such a good swim last week that I was worried that if I had a bad session this morning, it would wreck all my confidence for the Karri Valley Tri.  This was an even better session: right from my first porpoise dive, I was able to breathe bilaterally, something I could never do before.  I always breathe to one side until I get a bit more settled in the water but didn't need to today.  Swam without the wettie again and today we just didn't stop, back and forward around the buoys and the boats, back to Shelley on the shore and straight back out again.  We finished up with a long swim back to the boat shed and then some practise starts, both on the beach and in the deep water.  I arrived home with a huge smile on my face.  I cycled there as the car is in the garage and it took me 8 mins each way, I probably won't drive there again.  Can't believe how jammy I am to have these sessions on my doorstep.

Race is on the 31st, it's the second time I've done it and the first, the swim was awful - I couldn't put my face in the water and was way at the back doing a tearful breast stroke.  Going to be much better this time.

You're very lucky to be able to do these sessions.  You're going to do great in your race!

I went through this 3 weeks ago. Just rest and get better. Frustrating, and not fun, but it works. Your training will be there when you get well.

Gwen - it will be completely different and better this time around. I agree with Tracy - with all those river swims you are going to crush it!

There is. Scroll down about 1/2 the screen to the 'health' section and there is a drop down for 'sick' (I think) and you can select to what degree you are ill. Shows as yellow on your calendar.

So, I need some advice from the former sickies around here.  My resting HR is back to normal but I still feel blah.  My throat is killing be and my head is pounding.  Should I try to do an easy workout and see what happens?  If my HR was still high, I'd say no way.

Tracy - really sorry to hear you are still under the weather. I am far from a doctor, but my personal rule of thumb is "above the neck" get out and train, albeit easy. "Neck and below," rest up and live to fight another day. I ignored my own advice and then suffered 10 days in a row of zero training. The worst though was that my active HR skyrocketed and did not come back to normal for another two weeks. So ignoring a little sore throat turned into 3.5 weeks of way sub-optimal training for me. Rest, Rest, Rest - it will only be a couple of more days if you do!

Yeah, Rusty.  That's what I was thinking, too.  I just needed to hear it. Frown  A sore throat is no fun.  I'm still really wary since my bout with pneumonia last spring.  I think I'll go for a short swim and then do the yoga class that I enjoy.  We'll see.

I vote for more rest. See how you feel tomorrow.

Swimming this AM was a disaster. The pool was *85* degrees! It was like swimming in a sauna. Our coach made the entire workout nothing but form drills at easy pace. I started feeling like garbage about 20 minutes in, and after another 10 threw in the towel, and got out. Felt nausea and overly warm. Hopefully they'll ease off the heater for next week.

Hey everyone:

I have been seriously MIA.  OMG life has been totally crazy busy with kid obligations.  Plus the Volvo wagon, aka "the grocery-getter," came to an abrupt, inglorious death on the way home from work a week ago.  Finding a replacement car has not been a joy.  My son was in Costa Rica all last week with his high school band.  Mega time on Girl Scout cookie shops to unload cookies.  Almost done.  Kids' swim team practices.  Yoga.  Taxes.  Cleaning the hell-hole.  Folding laundry.  Groceries.  Demanding jobs.  One gets the gist of our crazy life.  But, I wouldn't trade it for anything.   Be here now.  That's my new mantra.

So my training has been haphazard.  The most consistent part has been swimming, which is a must do because I love the water so much.  Ran 14.3 on Saturday and have run a few times this week.  Today's run was the usual work route of five miles at an overall 8:50 pace.  Happy with that because when I started running in 2008 the best I could manage was around an 11 minute mile.  Not much spinning.  No time!

Sorry to read about all the sickness going around.  It could mean that people's bodies are getting worn down and need a rest.  Take time to get better and come back stronger!  A few down days will not kill one's overall training.

Mike-great job on your half marathon.  You are such an inspiration!

I have noticed that my scalp itches something crazy!  It must be the chlorine, yes?  Does anyone else suffer from this?  What's to be done?  I shampoo with a dandruff shampoo on the theory it should help with itchy scalp.  Should I find a swim-related shampoo?

crazy times!

I get very itchy skin from the pool, and its the worst in the winter when the air is super dry to start. Its usually my legs, though, and not my scalp. Some moisturizer post shower helps, but sometimes its itched so much I scratch and end up with bloody legs. OK, maybe TMI

Thx for the shoutout. Race was fun, and will do more. Now I'm thinking full marathon late this year.
