Um, shoveling?

Did a trainer workout, mostly HC work.  Swimming tonight, I get to swim with tennis balls in my hands.  I think my coach likes to keep me entertained.  Smile

A fab blast on the MTB with my race buddy Roddie. A bit of a make it up as you go route, using lots of the World Cup Circuit (including a section of BLACK ROUTESurprised which I didn't know about - just as well or I'd've bottled it!!) No snow at all here - except on the tops - lots of hopefuls with skis at the car park (I suspect lots of bare rock and heather on the "piste" now! (much better to be biking!)Cool)

The Ying & Yang of it is that the rest of today will be spent with my head in the booksFrown

Vitamin C, plenty of rest, lots of decongenstent. You'll get through it, hopefully you're feeling better soon.

taking classes??

When I started my current job (2 years ago) one of the requirements was that I had done a Clinical Diploma or equivalent - now 2 years later, the lumbering bohemoth that is the NHS finally has me enrolled - back to my original Uni as it happens doing a post-grad. It's a nightmare!

It's meant that the some of the time I would have spent with family and training has to be diverted to the books and I'm unlikely to be able to seriously compete in anything for the next couple of years, because I have to see my kids occasionaly! (The good thing is that my boss is totally lax about timekeeping and as long as the work's done doesn't care, so I've been lumping all my breaks together, going training at lunchtime then working like stink, til I'm done! It's not sustainable, but it's got me fitter than I think I've ever been for the Wee Tri.. we'll see!)

Bit of a rant - sorry!Smile

Hi Gang!!  Well, I had a pretty productive weekend... I got on the trainer yesterday (and knee held up well), mounted my bike cptr today, and went for short walk (and tried ot jog) w/ dog.
Overall, I'm happy with my accomplishments

Unfortunately, I learned this afternoon that my cardio is suffering (combo of congestion/and lack of training).

Yep, that's where I'll be sticking to with recent knee injury, lucky for me though, the snow is much better "on piste"' than "off"...
LOL
of course my skiis are a lovely shade of heather as well (yes, I have purple skiis )

I thought I once read somewhere that your gait is natural and you shouldn't try to change it (that could lead to further complications).  But rather, make sure that you have the proper shoe to compliment it.

Can anyone comment on that?

probaly for somethings like pronating ect.  You are going to be a more efficient runner if you toe strike rather then heel strike.  Its hard to do if its not your natural stride- I think anyway.

Maybe our lurker djdavey will comment... he knows running strides

DJ will send you to Newton.com.  The website shows how you should run.  I can't mimic it though

X2...  Running gait is tough to change.  There are things we can change for arm carriage, concentrating on leg turn-over, etc.  But regardless, it is possible to work on some little things.

Good to be back to some sort of training schedule...there for a while all things were going at once...

When I type "Newton.com" in, I get redirected to www.apple.com !?! Where should I be looking (need all the help I can get!)

Edit: CANCEL THAT! I found it here - that makes a lot of sense - heel striking is presumably why I've got sore shins?! oops! I'll try harder tomorrow!Smile

i here my name mention by joerunner and the chipmunk murderer herself (taminator) and i come a running!! (for the record, its newtonrunning.com, then click on the "run better" link)  MY OPINION on the topic of running gait is as such:

it is hard to change your gait and i do think that the "gait" is a bit natural.  however, the path that your arms follow is very very important.  some peeps out there say it all starts from the feet and works its way up, others say its the motion of the arms that is most important while others say its all about the core.  for me i fall more and more into the core group than anything.  do the low back and ab work so you wont be leaning forward as much from the hips. after that i think its all about shoulder movement.  the upper body shouldnt have much if any of a twist to it in running, so, if your elbow is coming across your body, then you are probably rotating from the waist.  once you start doing this your knees will also come across your body and then your steps will be all zigzaggy instead of forward.  a test you can do is to march in place with your elbows traveling a straight forward and back motion from shoulders.  march like that (with high knees) for a minute or so then take your elbows along a path that cross over in front of your body. you will feel the twisting that goes on then all the way down to your knees.

so, in closing, forward movement is the best, not crisscrossing.  tight abs and a good strong low back will lead to good core positioning.  as far as being a toe striker or a heel striker.................that part is the hardest to change but with work, it can be done. again tho, all of this is just my humble opinion and by no means do i claim to be a running guru, afterall, im just a short white boy from the burbs!!

Thank you DJ!!! From the analysis I had done this weekend, the only problem I have is being a heel striker. I am not sure I can correct that or not? I have been running for so long as a heel striker it might be impossible. I will check out that website and see what I can do!!!

I have some plyometrics to try out too.  IM training starts next week.

I've been trying these a couple of times a week (when I've time!). I think they're pretty much the same thing!Smile

The only thing with them is that I think I over-did it last night and/or the combination with all the tumbleturns in the pool this morning; I've been in discomfort all day. So push, but not too hard!

Hope it's just that and not the kiddos' tummy bug!Undecided
