Here is their polite response: Thank you for your E-mail and your interest in Ford Ironman Florida.
At this time, we are closely monitoring the oil spill off the Florida coastline and are in regular contact with local authorities. Updated information and news on the event will be available at www.ironman.com or www.ironmanflorida.com.
Thank you-

I didn't really expect them to have more of a response than this, but I do think it's important that they hear from us.  If you'd like to contact them, e-mail Jennette Harshman at [email protected]

In my note I merely expressed my concern and hope that there would be a back up plan and not a duathlon.

Just sent her an e-mail and am expecting the same form response that you received. However the more people that inquire the more likely it is they'll start planning just in case. (I'm crossing my fingers for a time trial pool swim, anyone else?)

I'm starting to think about my own contingency plan. Any ideas?

There are 2 in state HIM's around the time of IMFL. One of them may end up being my backup plan if the swim at IMFL is canceled.

If they cancel the swim for IMFL I may end up just doing Longhorn HIM, it's in my backyard basically and the cost for the event would be cheaper than the travel and accommodations for Florida. I really hope this doesn't happen.

Training wise, I did the Texas 4000 for Cancer Atlas Ride yesterday. The group is doing 4500 miles from Austin to Alaska and anyone can sign up to ride the first day with them. It was a 70+mile route and I ended up averaging over 19mph which I was very pleased with. However I know that I won't get to draft back and forth with anyone come IM time. I really need to up my volume for run and swim but I'm happy with where my bike is currently at. Now WTC just needs to figure out an oil solution.

If they can keep the oil out of it, I say they move the swim to the bay just north of where the swim would originally start in the gulf. It would take big changes to logistics, but they have 5 months to get it done.

I think the bay would be protected more than the open water.  It would have to travel in between the sand bars and the opening looks very small on google (<500 m) and they should be able to preven the oil from going into the bay with oil booms (the problem has been oil spreading laterally with depth but the water wouldn't be too deep there.

Has anyone thought about beach 2 battleship?  i really wanted to do an M-dot race since this is my first.  Looks like registration is $375 for the next few months and the race is the weekend after florida so timing wise we would still have time to train for it.  The REV Iron distance race is driving distance from where I live - probably 5 hours? but i think I will need the exta month and a half to get ready for the race.

sucky.

As for fun training - I've been away the last two weeks for work and sick the last week. Did a tri this morning.  Finished 5th in my age group, but i think there were only 6 people.  it was super windy on the bike which kind of killed me.  Swim was really good though

last time i brought up contingency plans everyone said not to worry. im worried. and the choices in the southeast seem to be great floridian and b2b, the latter is supposed to be fast and the former supposed to be a bit harder and less of a show. then i suppose we can see about IM cozumel. not really sure what else might be available.

I am seriously thinking of registering for the Great FLoridian as an insurance policy.  My only other option is Cheasapeakeman and the swim and bike are a little too rough for a first IM.  I wish the Mdot people would at least give us some more information, like "we are considering plans to move the swim" or anything that would show they are making an effort to not leave us with a DU.

Kathy:  I did a great charity ride yesterday.  I rode my bike from my home town to the NJ shore (Ocean City), a 75 miler.  Great fun.

I agree that a solid plan would be nice to have.  Or even information on timetable they will have to announce a plan.

Sounds like a fun ride yesterday...I miss riding.

I was able to pedal all the way around today and did 5 minutes of super easy resistance on the trainer today.

Great job Kathy on being able to pedal all the way around now!

I, too, did the Atlas 4000 ride this weekend, only I didn't average 19+ like F1Longhorn did!  The sweet part about the ride is that it ended at a winery and they were doing wine tastings.  Now that's a nice way to end a hot ride.

Like others, I was trying not to worry about the oil spill with IMFL being 5 months away.  However, I am now starting to worry.  I really want to do an IM branded race THIS year, since I turn 40.  I'm starting to consider my options.  If this wasn't my first, I wouldn't be so worried about it, but I don't want to put in all this training and time and not be able to finish an Ironman.  I guess we'll see.

Yeah I deft agree it would be nice if the M dot ppl could give us at least an idea or what they are thinking of doing as a plan b. Its seems like this is alot of ppl's first IM (as well as mine) so without the swim I don't think I would do it esp since the swim part is my favorite. I'm hesitating on booking my flight and hotel now. does anyone know if they actually tried to use kevin costner's machine? haha
