Thanks for stopping by Bryan and grats on the win this weekend.

I'm leaving for St. George tommorow morning and I have most of my race strategy figured out.  Right now I basically plan on getting my nutrition from liquids (Gatorade), GU's, and 4 Clif bars at the most.  As far as a getting your nutrition in, is there a ratio of solids / liquids that you reccomend?

Dylan,

I was feeling the same way for two weeks and I definately was getting sick.  It kinda forced me into my taper.  Right now any workouts are just going to help your cardio and that's it.  I'd take it easy until Wildflower.

Another IM question for those that have done it:

I know I can't receive stuff from people off the course.  Can I drop stuff off?  Say, when it gets hotter can I give my arm warmers to my wife?

Wooden Bell - 2010-04-27 3:33 PM I finally took my bike out of the shed and had my wife take a couple of pictures.  They're not exactly straight on, because she was on her way out, but hopefully they will give you an idea.  Maybe my seat's high, maybe my bike's too small... I really have no idea.  When I bought it (used), I just left everything as it was from the previous owner.  I'm interested to hear your thoughts.

It looks good to me; your handlebars are close to the legs but I ride that way as well.  The seat may be a tad high, but I wouldn't change it unless you think you have to.

Bryan, I appreciate your input in our group!  (And congrats on a great race this weekend!) I have my 2nd HIM and 2nd IM this year, so I still have a lot to learn.  Throw in a little work travel issues and it will be a fun filled year.

A question I have is this; after doing the Pfitzinger plan for a marathon this past January, I feel that the plan I am currently on is seriously lacking in running, but the bike volume is pretty good (I think).  Should I adjust the plan for the lack of running or trust the plan. (It is a bt plan for silver level members).  FWIW, I feel I run better on higher mileage plans, but have a tendency to be a bit lazy if the plan only calls for lesser miles/time.

I am a HUGE fan of Pftiz and used one of his plans for my Boston Marathon in 2008. However, an Ironman run is very different in so far as it's impossible for most of us AG'ers to get in the volume of running he requires while still doing swim/bike. If your plan has a run week that's light, do a little more frequency, but go short. In general, though, if you trust the plan, stick to the plan.

I agree, Pfitz worked well for me.  As far as the Ironman marathon, I refer to my LP marathon as a 26 mile buffet, I'm hoping to change that in FL.  The plan I am on now is a HIM plan and looking ahead, it does pick up the run volume more in late May and June.  I think the frequency is something I got used to with the Pfitzinger plan.

Thanks for the feedback!

My concern is electrolytes.  Do normal gels and energy drinks provide enough without needing additional? For my IM my plan was to supplement with some endurolytes during the bike and run to provide added coverage.  Is there such a thing as overloading electrolytes or are they simply flushed from the system if not needed?

Greg

I am the same way when it comes to sweating and salt. I have also wondered about electrolytes, and what to use to help prevent dehydration.

I'm interested to hear Bryan on this too.  I sweat a ton (not as noticably here in CO because of the dry climate, but I'll have visual salt around my eyes, face, down my arms, etc.) For my long runs and ultras I started taking electrolyte pills after talking to a number of ultra runners around here and it's helped me maintain my pace well into the 4,5,...8+ hour marks.

Gatorade Endurance or other sport drink contain sufficient electrolytes for the vast majority of athletes. And heavy sodium loss isn't always signaled by having a lot of whiote on your clothes. The only way to really know is to have a test done, but VERY few people suffer from that extreme a condition.

I drink to thirst and eat to hunger. My plan is to eat 2 cliff bars before mile 80 on the bike and get down 6 gels. I drink water with the gels and bars and use gatorade in between. Once off the bike, it's all gels and gatorade until I need a change around half way and then I hit the cola.

I am not an expert and it is hard to tell from the angle of the picture, but it looks like you might be sittng to far forward in relationship to your pedals.  Meaning that when your pedal is parallel to the ground your (right) knee appears to be forward of your pedal stroke.  My understanding is that you really don't want your knee to be forward of the pedal spindle when at that point.  Hopefully I am explaining this.  Take into consideration everyone has set-up preferences, but this can be hard on your knees and can reduce your power output due to the angle your trying to apply force to the pedals.

Ever notice that when you climb hills you can generate more power by sliding slightly to the rear in the saddle?  Bascially I think this would apply.  Maybe try posting a more side view shot and we can have a better look.  Hope this helps.

GRB1 - Thanks for the advice.  I think I get what you're saying.  So, basically, my knee should not be further forward than my pedal?  I never even thought about moving the seat forward or back, but that makes sense.  I'll check it out when I get home today.

Another little question on bike fit... I was looking at the Cobb Cycling website, and they mentioned that the seat should be a forearm's length from the handle bars.  Are there any other rules like this that are generally applicable with positioning?

Cobb saddles come with instructions that include a formula for determining seat height based on your inseam and saddle-tip to handlebars length based on your forearm length.  In fact, they even come with a soft tape measure to assist you in installing them.  There is probably no more respected fitter than John Cobb, and I actually used his formulas to make adjustments from my "FIST certified" fitting and was faster and more comfortable.

The instructions admit it might not be 100% perfect, but it is real close for the vast majority of people.

Josh, with all these people now looking to get cobb saddles (myself included) you should get a cut of the money cobb makes on us
I think im going to order after my HIM this weekend

Yes for the most part.  If you have a drop line from your knee to the spindle on the pedal, that is pretty much a good starting point.

What size bike frame are you riding and how tall are you.  It does look a tad small, but rider preference and fit can really alter depending on body types.

PennState - 2010-04-28 3:13 PM Anybody get any good training in today? I had a swim and run. More importantly I had a killer deep tissue massage session. VERY PAINFUL, but worth it

I might go for a short spin today...then a full night of bike cleaning and maintenance...and packing for friday
