So I did a swim (2500) and bike (21 miles) brick today.  Not sure that I have ever done one.  My legs were screaming during the ride and the hills were little guys.  Is it a matter of getting my lets used to it?

Also, ordered some Gu Roctane for my half aquabike in a few weeks. Decided to try it out today.  To me it is not at all good tasting, and tastes nothing like the orange gu gel I have. I had a hard time getting it down.  I may not be a good judge as I am very sensitive to tastes.  YUCK

QueenZipp - 2010-06-24 5:01 PM SetUp will allow me to change from the half iron to the sprint!!!  So happy, they're even refunding the balance on my HIM entry fee.  I <3 SetUp events.

So cool that they are allowing you to switch AND refunding the balance

Yeah, biking after a swim is definitely a little different than just hopping on the bike and going.  Do you kick a lot when you swim? Plus it looks like you had a hard brick earlier in the week so that may have contributed too.

As far as nutrition goes, it takes a lot of trial and error to find stuff that both your stomach and your taste buds like.  There are a lot of products I just won't touch.

Best of luck to you!!!

Carrie - keep doing some swim/bike bricks and they will get easier.  Most of my workouts are bricks of some sort just because that's the only way I can get them in timewise.  I really think it helped in my last tri, because my legs and body were use to the changes from one event to the other.  I even saw an article the other day that mentioned the swim/bike brick.  Some people have a hard time going from horizontal to vertical, so good to practice.

My visit to the Airrosti doc yesterday was interesting.  More of a deep tissue massage/physical therapy session in my opinion, but he told me to try to run to see if treatment is helping.  Did an hour jog/run last night and felt ok.  The "physical therapy" part of the appointment was a lot of foam rolling.  I know I need to do that more often, but REALLY need to make it a part of my daily routine.  May try to do some yoga moves every day as well.  It appears that my leg muscles are much tighter than I thought, so probably pulling on those low back muscles.

Have a great weekend everyone and if you are racing - best of luck!

Judi--that's great news about being able to switch to the sprint and AWESOME news that they refunded the difference.  Now you can focus on ramping up your training with impunity!

PP--best of luck on your race.  You're going to rock it, I just know!

Bri--I must have missed it somewhere, but Airrosti doc?  I thought I knew about just about every kind of holistic or alternative approach out there.  What are these practitioners supposed to focus on?  As an aside, if your quads and back muscles can hack it (mine can't without bolsters and support), try supta virasana.  Killer quad stretch and really, really good for the psoas.

Airrosti - an acronym for Applied Integration for the Rapid Recovery of Soft Tissue Injuries

I had never heard of them before either, but a guy in my office recommended him.  The cowork had a back injury from football in college and has had a lower spinal fusion. Not sure how he found the Airrosti doc, but he has had nothing but great things to say about him so I thought I'd give it a try.  It was interesting talking to him yesterday.  Very different approach to things.  He is actually a chiropractor, but focuses on the soft tissue aspects to heal people.

I'll have to look at the yoga move you mention.

Keep the nerves at bay....do something to relax and take your mind off the race.
I have found the more of a "knot" I get into mentally the worse the race will go.  Have to keep mentally loose in this sport!  (which is hard when we tend to be a group of type A overachievers!)

Who's racing this weekend in addition to Veronica?  What are your goals?

For those not racing, how about a lesson learned from racing or training?

I have a swim and a long run this weekend.  Hydration and nutrition are both difficult to dial in.  Practicing during training is very helpful.  I actually determined how much water/Heed was in each squirt of my bike bottle to determine how many squeezes I needed every 15 minutes.  Dividing nutrition into the number of calories I needed also ensured I ate the appropriate number of calories.

Good luck racers and happy training this weekend!

yogachic - 2010-06-23 11:03 AM Good to hear everyone's input on the bottle exchanges.  That's one thing I'm worried about for my half iron, since it's in the middle of July so I'm worried that even with 2 bottles on my frame + my aerodrink bottle, I will still need extra water.  Though I'm a wimp and will probably just opt to stop at the aid stations... I think crashing my bike at a water station during my first tri has made me wimpy in general when trying to negotiate hydration while riding Embarassed

Fi- Welcome back!  Glad to hear you're back to training!

Carrie- You know, I was wondering the same thing!  I saw a deer during my ride on Sunday and wondered what to do if it had jumped out in front of me?

On my first HIM, I used just the tow bottles on my frame. It was about 90 degrees when I got to the run but the bike wasn't bad. How often are the water stations? That might help in determining if you have enough.

Haven't been to active lately because I have been quite busy.

Judi- Good to see that you have hopefully corrected all the problems you were having. Now you start focusing on that training! Also glad to here you were able to switch that race and the best part get a refund!

Fi- Welcome back! Good luck with your training!. Here is wishing you stay healthy!

Carrie- I have the same problem with deer, not on my bike yet, but when I go running on the trails. I normally just try making a lot of noise to scare them off. So I clap my hands. Your yelling seems to work too!

I have been quite busy lately and not with training. I took two weeks off from structure training after my first HIM to give my self some mental rest. But it has been quite busy at the Water park I work at. Between getting the swim lessons up and running and all the other morning programs, I haven't really had any down time. My days off consist of constantly running around and in the evenings, I still coach my age group swim team. So this week was my first real week back to training and it was quite long. 6:30-2 was work, then either a bike or a swim and run, then eat a quick dinner with the 45 mins I had before coaching in the evenings, and then coaching till 9pm at night. I came home ate another quick snack, went to bed and did it all over again. Today was the first day off and lets say the 2.5 hour bike didn't make this day off enjoyable. The 3 hours of painting and the other odd tasks that needed to get done have made me exhausted. So if you have been wondering where I have disappeared too, thats what I have been up too.

I do have a duathlon this week end. This one is about 3 blocks from my house. It is a nice local one that is 2mile, 11 mile, and then 2 mile again. I really don't know what my goals are for this race. I would like to beat my time from last year and just have a good race day I guess. But well see.

Wow I ran and rode on the hottest day of the year.  It was 102 with pretty high humidity.

I went to a sports psychology clinic too to work on self talk and mental images to help get through challenging periods of effort and races.  Interesting stuff to practice.  The guy has a Phd and has some interesting stuff on his website too.

Best of luck Veronica and Scotty!

I'm scheduled to do my first 100 mile training ride tomorrow, but all of the sudden there's rain in the forecast.  I'll have to check the radar in the morning.  If I'm lucky I might get a good window.  Unfortunately these storms pop up quickly and knowing my luck it will be I'll be 40 miles from home when one hits.

I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend, training and otherwise!

Hey,

Got out everyday I planned to - had Tues as an off day. So happy as this is my first week of working in 6 wks and I have a 1hr commute.

Ride was challenging today as my back wheel was rubbing up against the frame. But the bike shop showed me how to bring back the little screws so that there is more room between the wheel and the frame. Will just move up closer for a race.

Well I managed to get my 100 miler in today.  I didn't get to leave as early as I wanted to because it was still storming at 5:30 when I initially woke up.  I enjoyed an extra hour and half of sleep until the sun woke me.  Unfortunately the storm left some pretty strong winds around and the later departure meant the temps had gotten up to 90 for the last couple hours.

I survived though, and was pretty happy with how things turned out.  Now I'm going to see how many recovery beers it takes to put me to sleep

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Sweet ride, Neal!

Tonight is the first time in weeks that I wanted to put on my sneakers and run.  ANd I couldn't cause I promised the pulmonary guy I would wait until after the weekend.  The humidity had died down and the temps were comfortable.  I really wanted to put on my sneakers and go.  I behaved and walked in the pool instead.

Had internet trouble lately, but good news to report.  After some rain before the race . . .

I did a sprint tri today, same as last year, my second race ever.  Last year I did the race in 2 hrs flat.  I dropped the chain on my bike 2x and I walked the run (never having trained for running).  My goal was to beat last year by 10 minutes.

I don't have my official results, but based on my watch, I think I beat my last years time by at about 20 minutes.  My swim was ~4 minutes faster (~17 minutes, vs. 21:42), ~8 minutes faster on the bike (~37 vs. ~45 minutes) and my run was ~10 minutes faster ~35 vs. 45 minutes).  Not sure about my transitions, but I am sure not worse than last year.

As soon as I got in the water, I just was having a, this is gonna suck kind of feeling.  Body wasn't really interested in exercising, but I came out of the water and looked at my watch was like WOW . . . I think that just propelled the rest of the race.  And the fact that I ran my run in about my 5k time was awesome too.

Hope everyone had a good weekend as well.

So my race went quite well today. Here is the link for the race report:

Metlife Duathlon 6/27

Here is my race report from my first HIM also. I finally got around to finishing that up and posting it:

Ironman Kansas 70.3 6/6

My race today went quite well. It was a 2 mile run, 11 mile bike, 2 mile run. My time was a 59:28 which put me in 2nd for my age group. It was a great race for me considering I took two weeks off and this past week before the race was my first week back. It was quite humid when the race started but by the time I finished, the storm that was blowing in, had cooled off everything.

So I have a question but first a story to understand the question.

I started running in the Sacouny Progrid ride 2 at the beginning of this year and they started out feeling great. After my first Half-mary, I started having a little shin/ankle pain. I took it easy on the running and it was still bothering me a little. Well about four weeks before my first HIM, I decided to try to run only indoors on a treadmill just to see if it would hurt less and it did. The week before the HIM I decided it was time to test it outside and the pain was still there. I knew going in to my first HIM that I was going to deal with some pain in that shin. Well I took those one complete week off, then one week of only swimming, and then finally back to a training plan. I didn't really feel this pain in my shin/ankle area. So my first run using the Sacouny Progrid ride 2, the pain was back. Me being the person that has a high pain tolerance and just likes to ignore things like this decide that these next 17 weeks before my second HIM were just going to be some long painful run weeks. Then the night before my race today, I knew I was going to use my Mizuno wave riders 12 that had about 250 miles on them. They are only comfortable for distances around 4-5 miles so I was like these should work perfectly. I also put some yankz laces in them and decide to wear them for a couple of hours to make sure the yankz laces felt good. I realized instantly that the pain in my ankle/shin area had almost diminished instantly. It was still there, but was barely noticeable. During my race today, I was able to run almost pain free in my shin/ankle using my Mizuno Wave riders 12.

So my question is why was a shoe that was working for me at first, Sacouny Progrid ride 2, before a HM then all of a sudden make it painful to run in? I figure I should probably stick with the Mizuno Wave Riders 12 now but they only get me 300 miles or less before they are shot. Does Mizuno make a neutral cushion shoe that gets more miles out of it than the Wave Riders? Any insight or justifications about why that is possible would be nice, I don't care if it sounds like the most outrageous thing ever. I am just trying to figure out to myself why one shoe all of a sudden caused pain and why another all of a sudden took it away.

If you read my training logs before my first HIM you won't see too much mention of my shin/ankle pain because I was trying to completely ignore it and pretend like it wasn't there.

Thanks to any one that takes the time to read this long rambling rant, just to get to my question. I really do appreciate it.
