The whole special needs thing has something to do with the company that used to put on IM Louisville. Way back in 2007, IM races were put on by two companies NAS and I think the other was WTC. NAS put on Kona, Canada and Louisville. WTC put on the rest of the races. NAS policy is not to return SN bags. Just more of a head ache for them to get them out to a point on the course and then have to return them back to wherever.  In 2009 (this date could be wrong) NAS sold the rights to Kona and Louisville to WTC. Long story short all three races still have the policy that you will not get your SN bags back.  As it was stated earlier, you can walk back to get your bag from the run SN between mile 13 & 14 but be prepared to dig for it. Last year once you were done with the bag they had a dumpster and a huge pile of bags and it went in one of the two.

Both my wife and I have come down with chest colds    She got it first (last week) and was forced to miss out on our her longest long run.  Now this week I've got it.

Timing could be worse...but certainly could be better!  I was really only planning on a 2 week taper but since it's in my chest I'm being forced to take some time off this week.   Key workouts this week was supposed to be a 80-90 mile ride, 4,000 yard swim and 12 mile run but not sure I'll be able to get any of them in.

Sorry - just throwing my own little pity party!

Can I join your party? I spent Tuesday night in an MRI only to find out I have a torn meniscus.

Man sorry to hear that Jhouse.   I've never had knee issues so I'm not familiar with a torn meniscus - any chance you can still race are you done?

My doctor said I can. However, I can hardly walk. Limping 26.2 miles does not seem like much fun to me. So if I am not feeling much better by Monday I am going to withdraw.

Sounds like my race from last year.  Hoping to do a little better this year! Smile

So I have been behind the 8 ball  training wise but been busting my rear end the past few weeks and Finally  things are falling into place just at the right time. One thing I  did noticed is that I find sweet things like gator aid or even a GU peppermint gel to be toooooo sweet for me now. I love my sweets. I even changed to a Dark Chocolate snickers bar on my long bike. My body is messing with my mind and my addictions

Hope everyone is doing well

I used to ride with nothing but gatorade and gels but on long rides it becomes too sweet for me and makes my stomach turn. Now I carry some perpetuem with me and a peanut butter/honey sandwich in addition to the gels and gatorade. Not a big fan of the ironman perform either I will be depending on my own nutrition for the bike portion.

Did a 16 mile run yesterday and a 50 mile hilly bike doing laps around Stone Mounain today. One more week of training. Then starting the Monday before the IM, as far as my legs are concerned, training will be completely over.  I can't believe Louisville will be  weeks from today.  Getting super excited!  The weather forecast as we get closer to the date appears to be around the mid 80's.  Let's hope it stays like that or better yet drops even lower.

I'm so excited that the race is almost here!!!  I was jealous of those racing in NYC this weekend....And I will be envious of those racing Mont Tremblant next weekend!!

Another couple of days and I will be paying close attention to the 10 day weather forecast!

In 2010 My family and I stood by the river on Saturday and watched the current I made the comment "This is going to be great I will fly through the swim". Woke up Sunday morning and the river looked like glass not even a ripple.

I have heard they close some locks farther up so we don't get much if any current at all.

It would be so sweet if they did have a decent current.  Maybe after they saw IMNY times they will allow it this year (I hope, I hope) as those were some wicked swim times.  With that island I wouldn't think we would feel that much of a current going up stream would we?

Hope for some rains in the days leading up to the race so they will have to open the locks upstream.  That is the reason for the time trial start, after all.  The current was so strong in 2007 (the inaugural year) that they didn't want athletes swimming against the current.

It was crazy that year leading up to the race.  I went down to the practice swim and we watched the debris go flying by. A few people braved the currents and were swept  downstream pretty quickly. Race day though there was not much of a current.

Just got back from a 3-mile lake swim.  It's only taken a few weeks and I'm used to swimming without a wetsuit.  I actually prefer it.

Swim Question: When you make a u-turn past the island and start swimming down river, what do you use to sight off?  The shore the left or perhaps the bridges?

I aimed down the Bridges very easy to see. My only issue was looking into the sun when we started.

I agree with using the bridges to sight off of, but you can use the buoys also.

So what type goggle are people using. Tinited or clear. I need to buy a new pair for the race. I normally use  TYR tracer metalize but if i need to get the TYR Clear or lightly tinited I will.

I have used the Speedo Air Seal Tri for the last couple of years and I really like them. They are mirrored. I also carry a spare set of Speedo Vanquisher's in smoke just in case. I was a compettive swimmer in my younger days and used Swedes until 2009 when they fell apart at Ironman Wisconsin and I swam well over half the swim without goggles.

OK I am thinking about renting wheels for the race.

Zipp 404 front and 808 rear for $110

I have had a good amount of people tell me that they would make a good difference over the 112 miles.

I have basic Ritchey wheels with Gatorskins now. Any advice would be great.

Thanks

I am happy with  my goggles just type tinted or clear or smoked for the race as we swim in three diffrent directions. The metalized ones are pretty dark in low light.

With the sun in our face as we go up the channel, I'll be using a tinted mirrored set of goggles and I have a smoke pair as my backup.
