Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by DirkP Well, since Rev3 Cedar Point is off, my race list for this season my "A" race just became Ironman Muncie 70.3 in 10 days. I don't feel anywhere near prepared for this race since it was just going to be a warm up to attempt to crush the 70.3 at Cedar Point this year. I have not been able to really focus on training and tapering or, more importantly, nutrition for the race. Since I am so late in the planning stages I will follow last years plan unless the heat takes over and then I'll have to adapt. I could be playing a serious game of chance if I am looking to have a good race. Not trying to dial things in could have some bad consequences if I am not in the ballpark. On another note, Brenda invited me to do an "pick up" sort of IM in September (I think). It isn't an official race or anything. It's a triathlete that is putting together a course and letting people do the "race" in a completely self sufficient way. I am considering trying to complete it but only train a little bit. I have to make sure it fits into my schedule with other things going on. BTW, at my race last weekend I was able to pick up a free race entry to a sprint the week after my 70.3. This particular race has a payout of $500 to the overall winner and pays down to 5th place at $50. I would love to place anywhere in that top 5 just to say I got paid to race once. I have heard a pro may show up just to get the prize purse but we'll see. My other take away's from last weekend were the "Best in the US" acceptance for placing highly enough, 6th place overall, 1st place AG and ANOTHER can of Heed (lemon lime). I have so much Heed from winning AG's that I could almost start a store. Dirk I would not worry that much you have a great base built up already and I think you are going to have a great race at Muncie. You have definitely improved again this season and I would not be surprised to see you put down another seriously good time this year. I'd also be all in on that money race too. If you have a chance to win some money at that race I'd go for it. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was finally able to get out on the bike this afternoon. It was freakin hot and windy out and I managed to get 67 miles in at 3:51. I was in a world of hurt when I was done today and I am not totally sure why. I thought I drank and ate enough but maybe I needed to drink more . I drained two bottles of powerbar perform and two bottles of infinit. All total I took in 1240 calories on the bike today but it didn't seem to be enough. The wind was brutal today too, I just felt like I was riding in a headwind the entire ride. To make matter worse I went down as well, nothing serious the bike is fine and my new bike shorts the DeSoto 404's are fine too. I was totally freaking out I though I may have torn them but I think they saved me. I was actually going very slow and made a left from a fork in the road which I was doing my loops. I was starting the next loop when I made the turn and a car was coming so I wanted to give it some room and misjudged how much room I had and hit some sand which got me off balance and down I went. The damn car went to the left fork anyway and it didn't pass my way so it was all for nothing! Thank God the bike and the new shorts are fine. I'm good too, two small scrapes on the outside of my left knee and some road rash on my behind, how embarrassing lol. I think I must have jinxed myself becuase my son and I were watching the TdF and talking about the crashes tday and if you ride in the tour you're going to get caught up in them eventually blah, blah, blah. Well I guess today was my day. I will say the DeSoto 404's are pretty comfortable with some really nice padding. I need to ride in them more and get some longer rides with them but I think I may use them for IM. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tony, so glay you and your bike was not hurt!!! Be careful. 67 miles is good and the headwind makes a huge difference along w/ the heat. With your conditiioning, you could do IM today and do well!!!! Dirk, your conditioning is really good. Go out, enjoy the race(s), kick butt and smile!!! Jen, how was your sprint tri in Marianna? Well yesterday I hd the best swim I have ever had, until it started raining so hard. I finally quit because of the rain, I mean it was FLOODING so hard that when i went to get air, rain was coming in my nose and mouth. |

We finally have some sun up here so I may try and head to a local beach with the famiy to get in a OWS tomorrow. Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello Junkies! Sorry for dropping off the map these past couple of weeks. After my super sprint tri on Father’s Day My life got pretty busy. A big deadline at work coupled with evenings as a vacation Bible school leader and then a few days camping all combined to eliminate all training for 2 weeks straight. I’m happy to report I am back on the wagon since Monday and I’ve picked up my training plan for back to back sprint tri weekends in September. My planned Olympic this year went out the window due to work schedule, but after feeling sorry for myself for a while I’m okay with it now and focused on the sprints. There has been a lot going on in this group! It has taken a bunch of time over the last 2 days to finally catch up on reading all the posts for the group. Very cool to hear that Tony and JoAnne got the opportunity to meet at Syracuse and that you both pulled through a tough situation with the weather. JoAnne, reading the last part of your race report about helping Katie to finish was awesome. Part of what is so great about the tri community is that it is filled with stories like that. Warren, your post about the minimal difference in length of swim when starting on the outside was great. I tend to start “wide” to avoid the egg beater of the middle of the wave and seeing that the increase in length is so minimal will certainly help my mental state knowing I’m not swimming that much further by doing that. |

Karl that is awesome that you had a good swim! To bad about the rain! Looking forward to hearing how Great your next swim is. |

Derek I had to laugh at that story and I agree if you ride you're eventually going to crash the hope is always that it won't be serious. This is the second time I went down. I crashed in the rain in a sprint last year and it was a lot worse. I had road rash on my back, hip and legs. I also had a nasty gash on my elbow. I will say that I had the exact same though both times, OMG my bike! Thankfully nothing serious. Be safe and enjoy your OWS tomorrow. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Vero welcome back and glad to hear that you've been able to resume your training for those Sept. races. JoAnne hopefully you'll never experience a fall or a crash. It's the last thing I think about when riding my bike. I'm always thinking about my safety though when I'm out riding. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tony, hitting the asphalt on your bike can never be a good thing but as Derek said it's only a matter of time for all of us. So far for me I'm still in the " those waiting to crash" category and I hope I remain in that category for a very long time. I hope the crash is leaving feeling good today since many times the day following something like that can leave you feeling a little worse. I also know of another in the group that had a crash recently but I'll allow that person to decide if they'll talk about it. The person is fine, so no worries. All the discussion brings up this story too..... Richie Cunningham ...... Be careful out there! Derek, you know chicks dig scars right? You could have laid on the ground for just a moment to get a little more attention before popping up and being the tough guy. Not that I would have done that of course! Vero, It's great to see you're back to training and getting ready to hit a couple of sprints. Work seems to get all in the way of what is really important, TRIATHLON!!! I guess I should go for my pro card and make all the money. NOT!!!! I just read Joanne's RR and something came up in there that got me thinking about the swim. Heres my quoted text from the RR......... "..............remember you can't see all that well when sighting so whoever it was that came upon you at that corner probably was unable to see you because of the low profile in the water. To be honest, I don't look for people when swimming, I feel for them. Attempting to feel the water in front of me to sense the turbulence that comes from another athlete that's kicking. Once I can feel this turbulence I determine if I should try to draft or pass them straight away. And sometimes I come up on swimmers from other waves fast enough that I never have the chance to feel them. In this case there's little to do but swim over them because I've come on them so quickly that I don't even know they are there until I smack them in one form or another. Rest assured I don't do it on purpose." I bring this up because we sometimes aren't looking for people in the water, especially after the water seems clear from the initial start of our waves. When we are sighting properly we should be land marking to find our predetermined points of reference to keep our line. When we sight properly ahead of us we only get a fleeting glimpse of what is directly in front of us, not allowing ample time to find the low profile of a person in front of us. The objective of sighting should be staying on our line. Sometimes faster swimmers can come up on slower swimmers really fast and can unknowingly collide with them. I have been on both sides of this scenario and it's unpleasant either way because it slows both athletes down and knock rhythm off........... ........Something to think about as we get ready for our next races. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tony - I'm glad the crash wasn't too bad. I managed to go 20 years between my last two crashes. When I did go down about 2 years ago I was going too fast down a paved trail I had only ridden once before in the other direction. I came around a corner just after a rise near the right hand side of the trail and the trail jogs over to the left there to cross a small creek. I launched off the side and tore the skin on my left leg up pretty good on the rocks around the culvert outlet before going over the handlebars and head first into some bushes. I was picking branches out of the vents of my helmet for a while after that. The bike was okay though.
Along the lines of swimming - I have only been in smaller races before. My largest swim wave only contained about 50 swimmers. When I swim I am constantly looking for that telltale column of bubbles ahead of me caused by another swimmer's kick and as I breathe bilateral I'm typically gauging distance to the swimmers on either side of me when I breathe in. Because of that I seldom come into contact with anyone during swims. I have had my ankle grabbed and been kicked in the chest when rounding a buoy but those both happened during a race I was trying to stay in the main pack more than usual. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had an incredible ride today! I rode with the 2012 TT Masters national champion. He could have dropped me like a school boy had he wanted to but I was able to hang on for 30+ miles. This was supposed to be an easy ride to set myself up for Ironman Muncie 70.3 on Saturday next week but when I have the opportunity to ride with someone of this class I'm going to take it. Below is a copy and paste from my log for today: The highlight of this day was the return ride with Gary Painter. I had heard of him but never ridden with him. He won the Masters national championship for TT last year (2012) at 57 years old. I was really pleased to have been the lone rider of 4 others to have been able to stay with him for all of the return trip. Some of the other riders in the group I ride with occasionally tell me I'm a strong rider but today those statements were reinforced by one of the beasts of the sport. Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dirk - That sounds like it was a fantastic ride and experience today! Trying not to be jealous of you here. I did finally manage to finish my race report from the Father's Day Super Sprint Tri. I have a Brick on my training schedule today: 45 minute bike followed by a 2 mile run. Now that the chores are done around the house I can finally get out there. It looks like the weather is being nice to us today. It's only 90 degrees right now. It has been triple digits every day for the past week. The 116 degrees on Tuesday was a new record for that day. I'll be carrying plenty of water for the ride. |

Near the end you should of asked when it was your turn to pull. ![]() Well the sun is back and he brought the humidity as well. It was 30C and way hotter with the humidex. I think that's like 145F right. I put in a good 41k ride out to a local park where they hold the swim for our local tri. Once there I swam about 715m. I noticed that my wife and daughter had shown up so headed back in to meet them. Not bad for my first OWS of the year. I avg'ed 1:53/100m without really pushing hard so that was good. I had planned to go in for another swim but there were quite a few boats and jet skis moving into the area. My wife and daughter are heading to the Inlaws for the week so I will have plenty of time to get back out there for a few more swims. As long as the weather holds that is. ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dirk that sounds like a great ride. You should be very happy with that ride being able to stay with someone of that caliber. You are a lot better cyclist then you give yourself credit for and like I always say when you get the opportunity to ride with stronger riders you have to go out and ride with those guys they make you so much better. I'm sure that was an awesome learning experience. Vero again glad to hear you've been able to get back to training and I don't envy you with that heat. It's been brutally hot an humid here this week making for some unpleasant training weather. Nothing near the 116 degrees you've had but still bad enough. Derek sounds like you had a great first OWS this season, good for you. Once June rolls around I do all my swimming in the lake, I'm so done with the pool. The more you can get out there in the open water the better you'll be. As far as the Richie Cunningham story I read about it yesterday and I couldn't believe it. That could be any one of us. I wish they could have caught the guy and beat him senseless. I hope the authorities catch him and I hope they make an example out of him. Guys I appreciate the concern I'm good no ill effects from my little spill other then feeling like idiot. I got a very solid ride in this morning, 40 miles and all hills. Man it was freakin hot out there today. We hit the hills on the North Shore of LI and I got do some of the infamous Oakwood repeats. I wound up doing 6 of them, 3/4 of a mile downhill and then you climb back up. We also hit a brutal climb on Old Post Rd which I've not ridden before. I wish I would have gotten more miles in but I can't complain I got a great workout in and I got to ride with 3 of my friends who are far stronger riders than I am so they always push me to ride harder. Sometimes it's all I can do to keep up but I know I'm gonna be a better rider because of it. |

![]() | ![]() Dirk, that was an awesome story. I've never ridden with anyone of that caliber, but I did have a chance to watch some pros on a climb in a stage race. It was actually comical how fast they were going up a 6% grade. I'm sure I could hang with them for at least 5 or 10 meters. Maybe. If I was rested and it was their last stage. I've been mostly offline this week since when we're at the lake the internet is flaky. I seem to have pretty good success with Facebook, but not bt or most internet sites. My quick training update is that I've wrapped up my big bike week, which was 4 days and 310 miles this year. I'm ready for a rest day tomorrow. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sorry everyone, I haven't had any free time to get on this week... anyway, I'm a little depressed about training lately. Since I'm going to be on a mission trip all next week, I was hoping to get a really solid week in but nothing has gone my way... I missed my Tuesday night trainer ride b/c I had flatted last ride and so I went to put my spare tube on and it had a hole in it. Then, I went to see my sick grandma (6 hours one way) Wednesday. She died an hour after we left to come back. They asked me to officiate the funeral, so I adjusted plans and decided to squeeze a ride in on Friday before I headed back up there. Was a great plan until I went down on the bike 1/2 mile from my house. I'm still not sure what caused me to go down. First I thought it was a front flat, but now I think the crash caused that (wheel is scratched up in one spot). Perhaps I leaned too much and my clip caught the pavement as I peddled through the turn. Anyway, it was on a pretty busy road and I went down hard. Going to have to get a new helmet although without it, I would have a gash in my head. Jersey, shorts, and gloves were all torn. Lots of road rash. Bike has some battle scars too, but mostly on brake levers, back skewer, aero bars... but frame is good. My body took most of the impact. Both arms and shoulders are going to take some time to heal... I'm interested to see if I can swim or not. On the "what really matters" front, my "granny" lived a long, full life and I'm glad I was able to be a part of celebrating that. She's my last grandparent, but I grew up getting to spend tons of time with her. I got to officiate her funeral service and share the gospel as well, which was a blessing. That side of the family is huge and there is lots of brokenness, so I'm very glad I could be there. 5.5 hours spent training 24 hours spent driving When I get back from my mission trip, I plan to start killing some training! |

Sorry to hear about your grandmother Will. I know it's not easy to loose a family member, especially one you were close too growing up. It's good to hear that you were able to be part of the celebration of her life. Family comes first, so I wouldn't worry about missing a ride or two. As for the crash, wow hard week for the junkies, at least Dirk stayed upright I guess. Hopefully there is nothing too seriously damaged and its just road rash. Take the time to heal, don't rush back too quick. Enjoy the mission. |

He said: "Watched an interview with ........I say That's INSANE. I have not even been 46 MPH going downhill yet and they were moving the entire train along at that speed. I guess I'll not plan to throw my application into the TdF race next season after all. Your cycling week has come to a close and that is one killer, awesome week! I would love to do that sometime too but if would be far to boring around here. By the end of the week around here I could tell you which crop is better though, corn or beans. I know we talked about this already but I don't think the scenario you're bringing up happened. I am convinced it was a pinch flat on the front, this seems to point in the right direction. At the speed we discussed about you riding around that turn you couldn't have been leaning hard enough to hit your pedal on the asphalt, IMO. Since you had just changes your tire I think it's more likely you had the tube pinched and you hit the sweet spot at the wrong time. I'm just really happy that you weren't hurt, especially given that you're needing a new helmet! How's Jenny with this now? I hope she's not getting to upset. Don't worry about your training that's missing from the week. Do what you can, when you can and things will fall into place. Like Derek said, your family always comes first but as you get ready to kick IM training off it's not much consolation that you missed something on the front end. Being with your family and having the opportunities that were presented to you on this occasion are far more important than some bike ride or race training and, yes, even the race itself. Originally posted by BigDaddyD79 As for the crash, wow hard week for the junkies, at least Dirk stayed upright I guess. Yeah! I was nervous about this yesterday! With Tony and Will going down recently I was a touch on edge and then it rained for the first 20 miles of the ride yesterday and it was the first group ride I have been on when it has rained, add to that that I was riding some new tires that I've only been out with 2 times and they are slicks. It obviously turned out well but I was nervous as we started. Edited by DirkP 2013-07-07 7:04 AM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tony I have been thinking about your long ride the other day do you think you need to add some plain old water to your ride ? Dirk that must have nbeen awesome, I know I would have been able to keep up for about a second lol. Also the article on Richie Cunningham just makes me so irritated, why do people have to be like this? Even just in everyday things . Will Iam sorry about your grandma it is never easy but Iam sure it is comforting to have been able to do the ceremony. When my dad died I read his favorite prayer durning mass and as hard as that was it still makes me feel good to know I did something a little special for him. Warren wow that's a lot of miles in a week that's awesome! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm Back! Good or bad, vacation is over and we have made it back home from Cape Cod, somewhat reluctantly though. I could probably spend a considerable amount of time there, especially on the outer cape where everything just seems to be at a different pace. Plus the scenery is amazing, from the ocean views to the bay and marshes and combine that with the meticuoulsy cared for Gardens that seem to come out of a magazine and it is just amazing. I will post some pics later when I get everything downloaded. I read most of the posts but a weeks worth is too much to respond too, a few that stand out: Will/Tony hope you guys are doing ok after putting the bikes down. Not sure who described it but they were right, either you have crashed or are waiting to crash. I am still waiting to crash, even though I have had a couple close calls. Will:Sorry to hear about the loss of your grandmother, those times can be tough. Dirk: So when are you turning Pro? All the times you have been putting down are ridiculous and then to hang with a top rider, why would you ever question your abilities? My June totals were a little dissappointing, Baseball season really got in the way of the longer bike sessions and the odd times for the pool didn't help either! But it is what it is, and the kids will always take precedent over training. July is free from sports so hopefully things will improve, until football starts in August! The percentage listed is how much of the planned milage for the month I achieved.
Now I was going to Brag about the distances I put in over Vacation but Warren throws out 320 miles over 4 days. Seriously? how does your wife approve this? I think I need to have a discussion about limiting your training time! I think you are overdoing it and need to stop immediately and eat some Pizza and drink some beer! Anyway, below are the totals from vacation. If you are bored I have a pretty good desctiption of each day in my log, the best being the swim. Kettle ponds are awesome!

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Will my condolences to you and your family on the loss of your Grandmother. I'm very sorry to hear that she passed but I'm glad that you got to see her before that happened and happy to see you be able to be a big part of the ceremony for her. Like Dirk and everyone else said don't worry about training family always comes first and make sure you take a little time to recover as well. I think when I went down hard last year it took me a week to get back into things and I just took it easy. Give yourself time and do the same. Warren you absolutely killed it this week with the bike mileage, 310 miles is crazy talk for one week. I'm glad you got to take adavantage though and get all that riding in. That must have been a great week for you. Dirk glad to hear your ride went well and apologies to the group the last thing we want to do is jinx anyone on the bike. As always I hope everyone is careful and safe when out riding. JoAnne you might be right I think maybe I should be drinking more water in general. I may not have been hydrated enough and I may not have drank enough given the heat and humidity we've had up here. Trust me I'm making up for though. Matt welcome back and glad to hear that you had a great vacation and took advantage and got to train while you were there. It must have been great to enjoy the great scenery out on the cape. I try and do the same thing when on vacation being able to sneak in some training in new and different places is great if you can do it. So I was able to finish the week off pretty well. I got a short swim at the lake this morning it was short of a mile but there was not much of a second group this morning just me and one other woman who is a little less experienced swimmer so we just did a couple of out and backs the short way. I did get a run in afterwards for a little over 7.5 miles. Man it was freakin hot and humid again and it was only 9:30 am when I started running. I was actually amazed that I could run that well today after the hill climbing bike ride yesterday. I was slow but I ran well and I actually feel pretty good. I was surprised when I looked at the totals for the week, I am just short of 14.5 hours for this week. Amazing and no wonder why I'm so tired LOL! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I wasn't very motivated to ride my bike today. I've determined that I need to move my long bike ride back to Saturday. Riding long on Sunday just isn't happening. Anyway, I rode my hill during my short ride today. The hill kicked my azzzzzz! When I uploaded my Garmin to Strava, I saw why it was so hard today. I hauled my butt up that hill faster than I ever have in the past! I even surpassed my husband's fastest attempt! (Sure, I only beat him by one second! It still counts!) I felt like I was going to barf at the top and I was saying lots of bad words. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Junkies - Hope you had a wonderful and long weekend. My 7.4.2013 race was awesome! Not b/c I raced super fast like Dirk suggested, but because I did something I had no idea I was capable of.... I helped two ladies get through the swim. FOr one lady it was her first triathlon and she told me in advance that the fear of the swim was crippling her. The second lady is in our tri club and it was her second race. Our tri club member was actually swimming back to shore and telling me that she couldn't do it. I told her to turn around, get on her back, and I would guide her through the swim. I helped both of them get through a cold, icky swim through plant vegetation in the rain! I actually placed 3rd in my AG and rocked what I think was one of the fastest bike legs I have probably ever done. Maybe it just seemed that way since we were just about the last people out of the water and I got to pass a LOT of people. No splits were recorded, just our gun time and finish time. The whole race was in a torrential downpour and made it memorable and challenging. I can't say I would do much of anything different that day, I essentially "gave up" my race and was more fulfilled by the kind of race I had. I'm not saying every race will be this way, I will still want to get out there and push myself as often as I can. Short blog post about the race --- Race recap: http://wp.me/p32uES-8P |
