Sunny
Total Time = 52m 52s
Overall Rank = 25/132
Age Group = 40 - 49
Age Group Rank = 6/23
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at the hotel and got dressed. Woke the kids up and loaded up in the van for the 30 minute drive over to Rancho Seco. Ate a banana and drank water on the way. Once we arrived I got signed in and found a spot in transition then used the restroom before putting on my wetsuit.
Event warmup:

Got in the water as the first wave left. Swam easy for a couple minutes and then chatted with others from my wave while floating / standing around waiting for our wave to start.
Swim
  • 07m 10s
  • 400 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started wide left. Maybe 30 feet off the shortest line to the first buoy which is a right hand turn. There was one other swimmer out there and I figured I'd fall in behind him and draft. After a dozen strokes I realized I was a much faster swimmer than he and I passed him. As I rounded the first buoy I realized there were very few from my wave ahead of me and I had a good lead on the next swimmer behind me. I swam in hard and didn't stand up until it was too shallow to pull myself along. I exited the water and ran up to transition while unzipping the wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

Probably need to start right on the front line at this race in the future to avoid having to go around many slower swimmers.
Transition 1
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

The run up to transition was good. I had a little trouble locating my zipper pull but it didn't slow me down while I ran.
I did step over near the edge of transition and Becky sprayed me with sunblock aster I was out of the wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

This transition was about as fast as I can reasonably go with what I'm doing so I'm happy with it.
Bike
  • 26m 29s
  • 8 miles
  • 18.12 mile/hr
Comments:

This bike ride was so fun! I had a little trouble getting my right shoe to clip onto the pedal. Once I had it clipped I was going hard. At 2 miles my heart rate was up and my legs were feeling the burn a bit. I kept thinking to myself "if you don't slow down your run is going to suffer" but I just couldn't bring myself to slow down. The bike is just so fun to ride. I did spin a little easier as I approached T2 to prepare for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more. Lots more!
Transition 2
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

Again I know my transitions could be a lot faster but I'm okay with the amount of time I take
What would you do differently?:

maybe switch the laces on my run shoes to yanks so I don't have to tie them
Run
  • 15m 19s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

This run was hard, but good. I felt like I was pushing hard and I felt at times that I was nearing my limit. I made the mistake of trying to drink a bit of water while on the run from the aide station right outside of transition and I choked on some of it. The cough and throat soreness after didn't help. I did walk the aide station at about .75 mile to go to get some water.
What would you do differently?:

drink a little more on the bike and skip the water on the run. or at least only grab water at one aide station
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some water right away while walking around. Then headed over to the food tent and got some fruit and a cookie. More walking and chatting with my wife and our daughters

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm not sure I could have done much better than I did. I am very pleased with the results

Event comments:

TBF does a great job putting on these races. I think they get better at it each year. Very relaxed atmosphere, low key but still plenty of post race activity. Great race anouncer. With lots of competitors hanging around and often cheering as others finish. This is a fantastic race for someone's first tri and probably 30% to 50% of competitors were doing their first at this event.

I finished this race 6th in age group. They award down to 5th so I missed my first podium by 40 seconds. Exciting and disappointing at the same time.

Sounds like a good race!  I wonder how close you were to the podium?  You talked about your transitions being slow, so I wonder if making faster transitions would have put you on the podium here.

All of your times look pretty good too.  Your swim catches my attention the most.  That is a solid pace for your swim and probably put you as close to the front of your AG in the final placement because you were out of the water so quickly.

I also like that you put down a hard core effort on the bike without letting off the throttle.  Since this is a super sprint you can really put yourself out there and suffer as much as possible.  I also doubt your run suffered much from the hard bike effort.  I just don't think there was enough time to allow lactic acid to elevate enough to hurt your performance much.

Great race!  Solid efforts throughout!

Sounds like a great performance all around!

But the transition times look slow. Were they just very long? Or were they slow relative to the other racers?
I don't want to make you dissatisfied with your performance, just looking for opportunities to speed you up even more!

Vero congrats on a great race. You put down good times in the swim, on the bike and on the run. I agree with what everyone else is saying though you probably could have gotten on the podium if you were a little faster in transition. Regardless of that congrats again on a 6th place finish in your AG. You are making great progress and you know you'll be getting on that podium soon enough.
