Thanks.  I am sure I looked good at the finish because I walked so much.  I still have to google and find out why my hands were so swollen, I will do that now.  Hopefully I can do a race report tonight.

Hmm.. it appears that swollen hands are a sign of sodium imbalance, in my case, likely low sodium. Grr.  I should've known better.  A lot of the runners out there were popping Endurolytes like candy.

I didn't plan very well for this race mostly because I didn't expect to actually do it. :-)

Congrats on the finish!!

I thought swollen hands meant low sodium too, but I have read info to contrary (and my Dr. surmised that it was right) that swollen hands means too much sodium.  I guess it makes sense to me physiologically, but I really don't think I take in that much, and it happens to me pretty frequently on long runs, so I don't totally get it.

Thanks!  Yeah the places where I read about it, mentioned that it can mean too much or too little.  Either way there is an imbalance that it is trying to work out.  And when I think about how my race went, it seems obvious I didn't do enough salt.

The section that I read, said that when you have low sodium, you end up peeing a lot of clear stuff, and your hands and feet swell up, because the body is trying to rid itself of water as much as possible in order to level out the sodium percentage.  The puffy hands is the body stuffing water into every cell possible.

But, it's all hearsay for sure. :-)

Haha, huh wha?

Thanks. :-)  It's a pretty uneventful day really, except maybe for reflection and analysis.

Thanks everyone. :-)  What I want for my birthday is a healed knee.  Let's see if I can get it! :-)  I have only run like twice in the last month.

How is everyone doing?  What's on the schedule?  I have the Disney Goofy Challenge in January, and probably the Resolution Run 5k in Baltimore on New Year's Day.  I've never missed a Resolution Run.

Wow, I totally missed the boat.  Happy Belated Birthday!

We are trying to get back into a routine, specifically learning not to drown again.  The times in the pool so far are slow, but still about 20seconds/100 better than they were last year at this time.  No races planned in the near future.

Only twice in the last month? Didn't one of those times happen to be a 50 MILE RACE!!!!! Isn't there a rule that you need to recover one day for every mile that you race?

I'm doing the New Years Run if Dave does. Though we've been trying to coordinate a run together for almost a year and it hasn't worked out yet.

I'm doing the Celtic Solstice on the 19th. After that I'll probably take it easy through January and start Eagleman training in February. Oh, I'll probably also do the Cherry Blossom 10 miler in April

haha, ok one of them was a 50 miler, and yes that's the rule, but that doesn't usually mean no running at all.

I can't see myself missing the Jan 1 race unless some great woman comes up with plans for me, and I don't see that happening. :-)

I overheard Jim Adams saying that 3002 people were signed up for the Celtic Run.  That is just crazy.  There was 800 last time I did it.

Cherry Blossom run is fun but the weather can be really really bad at that time of year.  Or, it could be good. :-)  When I don't do it, it is good, so you are gold.

I'm looking forward to New Year's but now hope you can't make it.  :-)

I'm lucky for the Celtic Solstice. I have a friend who lives a few blocks away from there. we all park in her neighborhood and then go back there for brunch after the race. It's about a 5 minute walk to the start/finish.

Happy Birthday Linda!  Wow December is a busy month.

Wow Steve is really going out on a limb with thinking Linda would do a 2 hour run on her birthday. ;-)  It's not like she does those every day.

Does anyone in the group do any type of mental training to prepare for an event?
I just bought a book about mental training for triathlon.

Mental training like what?

Is anyone up for doing the Bay Swim with me?  The lottery is now open at linmark.com.

Mental training...hmm...I guess like visualizing...I don't know since I have not read the book yet. I was curious since I read Selene Yeager's blog last year when she competed at Kona and she did some mental training.

I remember reading some chapters or articles on visualizing but I really can't recall one piece of it. :-)

For those who say 4.4 miles is too far to swim, remember, a 5k seemed unreachable, a 10k seemed unreachable, a half marathon, a marathon, a triathlon, a HIM, an IM.. all unreachable crazy goals.  And how did those turn out?

You're right.  I haven't died yet.  You have to admit, though, that although I've never done it, dropping out of a marathon seems less dangerous than dropping out of an open water swim in the middle of the Chesapeake.  Maybe after my IM swim training I'll feel more confident.
