Thanks for all the well wishes for ds. He had a great time but finished 11th in the State.  Not too shabby really.   I think he was happy.

GO ART!!!   How exciting that another of our Manatees is racing!    Will be waiting for your RR.

Stacie...I am getting better, but I wish I had some of your endurance!

Had a good swim yesterday and then fun with the kids.   There is a great Family Aquatic center in the city where the track meet was so I took the younger kids.   Funny super slides!   Only bad part was that I went down one with 10yo ds since he was a bit nervous about going alone and hit my "bad" ankle on the pool floor.  OUCH!   It was already hurting a bit from my run the night before.   I realized I had really slacked off taking the Cal/Mag my chiro had put me on, as well as another Bone Joint Ligament supplement that I have.   So back on them yesterday and using my esssential oils frequently!   Feels better today.

Hi Manatees!

Thanks so much for the well wishes! I thought of how much being part of this group has helped me more than once this morning.

I finished my race in 2:02:02. I would have liked something around 1:50 but this race was to get some more experience and guage where I am right now. I'll fill in the details in my RR after they post the times.

I do have a question. Last year getting out of the water my heart rate was higher than expected and I was a little dizzy and nauscous. I figured it was nerves, limited OWS experience, etc. I had the same thing happen today. I was as calm as I have ever been in any race and I made a point of trying to focus on technique. I've been doing 1,000-1,250 yrd swims in the pool so I don't think it is the distance.

I'm wondering if my wetsuit could be effecting my breathing? Do you think that could be the problem? It's tight, they're suppose to be right? Could it be keeping me from getting as deep a breath as I normally do?

Any insight would be appreciated. It's really effecting my performance in the other two segments.

Art-- congrats on your race!!!  Good job! And yes, I do believe that wetsuits can interfere with breathing. But I defer to those most amazing of leaders, Beth and Yanti.

Did you post a RR, Art?     I will be watching for the responses about the dizziness because the only sport that leaves me feeling light headed and shaky is swimming.   I figured it was the chlorine and the early mornings.

Let me add my congrats too, Art!! As far as dizzy and swimming. I do know that in a prone position like swimming our blood is for lack of a better term, "spread out" over all of our body and when we get up out of the water it's like getting up too fast, sometimes you get dizzy and lightheaded. That's one thing. I do know the wetsuits can create anxiety and squeeze us in un-natural ways as well as swimming around all the other people thrashing about. I've had mini panic attacks in the water and I end up talking myself out of them and finish the races. The more I do though, the less I experience that anxiety. All my tri swims have been in open water. I don't want to scare you but just for informative purposes there's an interesting article on swimming induced pulmonary endema on slowtwitch:

http://www.slowtwitch.com/Training/Swimming/Swimming_Induced_Pulmonary_Edema_SIPE__45.html

It doesn't sound like what you're describing, but maybe you'd be interesting in reading it.

And, when I swim indoors in a chlorinated and not well-ventilated space I do get light-headed from the chlorine gas vapor.

Hope everyone's enjoying a nice Memorial Day weekend....

Lynn

Hey Art,

I reached out to rstocks3 (Bob), he's one of the best swimmers here on BT - I asked him your question and here's his response.

Feeling nauseous and dizzy after an OWS is not uncommon. I would have to say that it is not from the wetsuit being tight. If someone wasn't getting enough air because of a wetsuit being too tight they would feel it throughout the swim in the legs and arms from not getting enough O2 to the muscles that are being used. Make sense?

The dizziness usually comes from the body position change and a persons equilibrium not adjusting fast enough. I have had this happen to me as well. The good thing is that there is an easy fix. What helped for me was to sight more often at the end of the swim. Just getting your head vertical a few times before exiting the water will help. If this does not work, porpoising and doing a few steps walking before the exit will help.

Sometimes if a person is a "non-kicker" because they are "saving their legs" for the bike and run (which I believe is a crock but is a whole different thread) it is a simple as kicking for a 100 yds before the end to increase the blood flow to the legs.

Good Morning Manatees!

Just a quick note before I've got to get on the road.

Beth - Thanks for getting the info from Bob. That is consistant with what I was reading last night.

Lynn & Amy- Thanks for your input also. Looking at it now I think it is a combination of the factors you mentioned.

I'm hoping to have the time breakdowns later today so I can post the RR.

Have a great day!

ART.  gonna go and read your RR right now....but wanted to add my 2 cents (worth about a 1/2 a cent.  LOL)

sometimes i have had issues w dizziness/feelings of being unbalanced coming out of the water.

ive found that most times it because i have water in my ears.  (even wearing a cap

knocks out your equilibrium.  and the water (for me) gets in 'deep' which makes it 'worse'

i dont swim w plugs...probably wont ever.  dont like the 'closed in' sensation.

but just being mindful, ive gotten into the 'habit' of giving my head a good shake to the lft and right as im coming out of the water, which has helped a lot.

the horizontal to vertical make a heck of a lot of sense too....

like you said, maybe its a combo of things.

Hi Manatees! Was busy this weekend & didn't get to post. Haven't caught up with the thread yet. I hope everyone is doing ok. I see there is a race report to read. Will catch up & post later. The weather is sucky here today, so I think I'm gonna ride on my trainer. My back is hurting. Maybe it'll help to stretch out on the aero bars. Im going to New Orleans later to have lunch with my family. Hopefully it'll stop raining by then.

Subject: Happy Monday!
Oops - I'm using the computer at the studio not my home computer, not used to the keyboard .. hee hee .. I posted a blank message.

I believe it's a holiday Monday in the States - happy long weekend, my friends to the south.

My half-marathon training officially starts today. And as such, throws my nice balanced tri training plan out the window. But I'm happy with it - I'm really looking forward to it ... I enjoy running, I think. Ask me in 10 weeks if I still feel the same way, though. ;-)

So now I'm running 5 times a week and just fitting in swims and bikes where I can. This year my race plan is to just get through the swim and bike, rock the runs ... then over the winter I'll focus on building my bike strength.

I volunteered at a great race yesterday ... gave me some excellent motivation that I was sorely lacking.

Anyhoo - I haven't had time to go through all the past pages of posts ... sorry guys, I haven't kept up in a few weeks. My life got thrown off kilter for a while - but I'm back now. ;-)

Lynn- that's scary stuff. I'm sticking with the theory that it's just the blood flow, lack of open water swim experience with a little "mini panic attack"/freaking out thrown in. :)

WOW! Active Manatees over the weekend! Art- your race was great. Sharie, your son did great, too. I guess it's the end of the season for him. I hope he has a fun summer! To everyone else, glad you had a good MD weekend.

I am down with my back this week. It's been bothering me for over a week now, but I continued to run & swim & bike on it anyway. When it hurt even when I swam, I knew it was time for a break. I plan to rest it all week. My daughter is here from NY, so I'll use the time to spend with her. Eventually I guess I'll break down & see my chiro & get that MRI he wanted me to get before my race in April. Luckily, Tylenol really helps.

Happy training to you all.

Art,
What a great RR and Congrats on your performance! About your swim, I have heard ppl say the buoyancy of the wetsuit and the waves of an OWS leave them slightly "seasick". They take motion sickness pills (non drowsy type, lol). Not sure if this migh be your issue.

And I had to laugh about your comment about the kinds of ppl who pass you. One yr, I looked on incredulously as my super fast husband got passed at the last minute in a half marathon by an 80-90? year old lady, tanned and leatherly....wearing a 2 piece string bikini.
