Leah -sounds like a great time with the girls!
Kate- I hope you are having a good 18 miler
Debb-Have you asked at your pool if they have any reciprocal agreements with another? When my Y pool was closed I was able to go to another Y for 2 weeks.
Kiri-gogogo-congrats on the -50
Scott-You crack me up -pomegranate martinis LOL
Keely- are you going to log?
Elke-- are you going to log?

I'm getting back to regular things I'm working today. Will get a workout in tonight on the trainer. I found a CrossFit class not too far from me and I am going to check it out on Tuesday evening.

They are supposed to email me how we did on the time trial, but he said we improved a lot.

I didn't end up running last night more for the fact that it got late and when I exercise late I can't sleep - and I wanted to make sure I at least had a good night rest.

My pool is a university pool, so alas no I don't think I can swim anywhere else while they are closed for the semester break. It's a small price to pay for such a great non-crowded pool at a reasonable price. There are a lot of pools in the city but some of them are yuck.

I'm looking at maybe taking a few masters swims with the group that teaches my Tri-Club swim class they are called Chicago Blue Dolphins. They sell "punch cards" so you can buy individual sessions they have some minimum time requirements but he said I'd be fine. I just have to check to see what dates they offer and if they have sessions during the holidays.

Otherwise I think maybe I'll just pick up doing some DVD strength workouts just have to figure out what. I do have 5lb and 8lb normal hand weights, and adjustable hand weights that are 5lb-25lb (like the box-flex ones but these are knock-offs from Target) and a bar with various light weights.

Lisa - Let us know how you like crossfit. I'm interested in it too but nothing is close by enough.
Scott - If you can include that as fruit can I include hazelnut lattes as nuts?
Leah- Enjoy The show!
Kate - run run run run!
Keely- are you going to log? (maybe if we ask enough it will happen!)
Elke-- are you going to log? (maybe if we ask enough it will happen!)

I'm going to get a quick treadmill run in and then PIEPALOOZA!
PIEPALOOZA is our annual NOliday party - that involves cocktails, and you guessed it - PIE!

Prepare yourself, this is TERRIBLE...

Training will involve intervals of lifting fork full of pie to mouth...

Last night we made the sweet pies - Pear Ginger Crumb and Chocolate Hazelnut Amaretto Chess Pie.
Today we are making the savouries - Lamb/Turkey w/ Veggie Cupcake "Pies" and Asparagus/Crab/Artichoke Hearts quiche.
Dunno what else is being made for the party - this combo had been mentioned, pumpkin blue cheese sage caramelized onion savory crust -  but I will attempt to limit myself to one fork full of each and two delicious cocktails.

Have fun out there!

Oh and... I started watching Big River Man last night http://www.bigriverman.com/
fantastic documentary about Slovenian Martin Strel who has swum the Yangtze, Danube, Mississippi, and the Amazon. Yes, really.
Highly recommend - beautiful flick (won a sundance award for cinematography), interesting character - probably the most intense endurance athlete you will ever learn about.

2.4 miles is nothing compared to what this guy swims daily (5 hr training sessions, 50-60km a day) - and he's unapologetically overweight. Good form trumps fat!

Hey gang.  I am reporting back.  My run didn't go as great as I hoped.  I was slow and short on miles.  I only made it 13.5 miles.  At first I was VERY upset with myself but I'm ok now.  I figure I will keep plugging away and if I don't feel ready I can always go with the half versus the full marathon.  Catch you all later.

Did you ever think a day would come and you would say, I only made it 13-1/2 miles?"

What happened that you stopped at 13-1/2 miles?  You said you were slow, did you just run out of time?  I don't remember a run of a distance of 18 miles from you before.  If your previous max was 13.1, then 18 was a huge jump.  You know you have the half marathon nailed and unless it will be a real mental kick in the rear, why not stick with that distance for the race in January.  You already have two sessions in the last week or two (when was your half marathon race?) of that distance.  The HIM will be at that distance and you can just concentrate on speedwork and maintaining that distance on the run.  You are just going to kick you know what at the HIM - you have huge biking distances under your belt, multiple 13 mile runs and solid swimming.

I don't think you have anything to beat yourself up about.

Well, the least you can do is report back in detail about the various pies and how good they were or weren't.  Hopefully they were all dreadful and you won't be able to make us jealous.

Hello all - plan on a run today and some strength training. Christmas shopping this afternoon..

I think any strength training program for the shoulders-tris-chest should help keep your strength up. Try dips, push ups and planks if you do not want to use actual weights.  If you have very light weights there are a couple of good shoulder exercises...even 5lb weight will provide a great workout.

Last night I tried to get my fruit intake by drinking pomengranite martinis..I think I failed miserably.

Christmas shopping counts for another workout.

Did you fail miserably at drinking the pomegranate martinis or did you fail miserably at getting your fruit intake because the martinis didn't have any pomegranate in them?  I'm a little confused.  Or did you drink so many martinis that you don't know whether they had any pomegranate in them or not?

I had a wonderful time at the Nutcracker.  My little granddaughter did terrific, even on day 2 with no nap.  However, the outing coupled with the rain means no meaningful exercise today.  I did a "weak peach" workout which is nothing more than a bunch of crunches, squats and pushups.  Better than nothing, but not much.

I think going in for a few swims with the masters group is a great idea and the coach might be able to give you some tips on form and technique and such.

I wish I could post more often... my work schedule is a bit hectic, but this week should be better...I may be the shortest of the bunch... 5'1 with shoes on volleyball was never in my cards (nor was basketball) I did play waterpolo once upon a time.Challenge goal. Not eat ANY cake scraps or cookie dough. (This is a tough one as I am around them about 12 hours a day almost every day.) I also need to log all of my food intake... it's helpful.I currently weight 160 I'd love to weigh 155 by the end of challenge, but I too have lofty goals. It's been hard to train this week as I have been super busy and it's been raining in CA... I skipped 2 days Kate, my races/events upcoming are: Huntington Beach 1/2 marathon Oly tri in March near Palm Springs (woohoo) HIM Oceanside end of March.I'm not sure how to log training... here in the forum? I am supposed to swim and run MWF and bike Tue, Thur, Sat. I take Sun off. Total roughly 10 or so hours a week... really need to get moving though, I feel like I've been lagging.Scott, (I think you asked) I have a cycleops trainer (not the fluid, the cheaper one) works great. As a side note, my husband was offered even more incentive if he stayed with his current job, so we are staying in Santa Barbara... yay!

You should log your training in the Training Log so we can check up on you and nag you if you need nagging.  I mean, encourage you from time to time.

I can think of worse places to live than Santa Barbara.  I love that area.

I did a Spinervals DVD tonight and that was it for the day.  Next week will be better.  I hope.  I'm taking Wednesday off and planning to do it all - Crossfit, swimming, biking and trail running.  Still have to get through Monday and Tuesday before Wednesday gets here.

Have a good week everyone.

No.  I was in a terrific one (KathyG and Queen Zipp were the mentors and it doesn't get much better than that), but there were too many people and too hard to keep track of everyone and I was just overwhelmed by it.  That is why I love our Nutso group.  It is manageable for me.

And now I am off to the dentist.  Lucky me.  It is just for routine cleaning, but I did something dumb with my jaw this morning and chipped my front tooth ever so slightly.  Not noticeable visually, but I can feel it.  So it is fortunate that I am on my way to the dentist anyway.

Happy Monday everyone! I just need to get through this week and next Monday and then I am off to Wisconsin for two weeks.  This weekend was terrible as far as working out..and I thought eating. But apparently the scale says I did not do as bad as I thought.  Walking around the mall for 2.5 hours on Saturday and another 2 hours on Sunday should count as something but I do not think it is loggable.

I have been looking into getting a coach to put together a plan - especially since my knee is of a concern and I may have to substitute for runs in the next month or two..but boy are they pricey.  The highly recommended coach is $250.00 per month which is out of my price range. Maybe I will try and keep building my base and then hire her in a few months to work on better form.

I am hoping at PT tonight that they do my run and gait analysis.  Since I am only going once more ( Thank you Insurance company) and had to cancel the rest of my appointments I am hoping that the PT will get me a good number of exercises and drills for the next few weeks.

I did pack my lunch today. And I am hoping to get a work out in after PT.  It depends on what the PT does - sometimes the sessions are worth two or three workouts(she is a big fan of circuits).

Have a great day everyone.

I went to Crossfit this morning and got in a six-mile run (using the word "run" somewhat loosely) tonight.   Tomorrow is swim in the morning and a trainer ride in the evening.

I'm eager to hear how you like your Crossfit gym.

Hey nutsos,

Just finished 2 hour drainer ride...

Survived piepalooza, tried ten delicious pies - the clear winner was my chocolate hazelnut amaretto chess pie, absolutely and obnoxiously decadent. Didn't gain anything and now pie is out of my system.

We are leaving for Chicago in the morning, ten days of hanging with my sister & family. We are going to try to make excursions into the city regularly - but don't know what else my sis has planned. I'll be doing a couple laps of the Denver airport in honor of Scott has we have a 3 hour layover there. Hopefully my workout routine would be too disrupted and I can stick to the diet plan.

Otherwise keep it up all, gotta get in there and peek at what everyone has been up to! And you crossfit ladies rock, it seriously intimidates me...

ciao,
k

Hello all..Went to PT last night for the final time in a while. My PT put me on the treadmill and videotaped me from a few different angles.  The most important thing I learned was that my calfs look awesome.   Unfortunately it was down hill from there.  I am definitely a heel striker no matter if I am slogging along or actually running.  My right leg also has not bend or shock absorption at all to it. So - I was told not to run except maybe 1 or 2 x a week on a treadmill for 30 minutes max. And that I am supposed to be working more on form then actual running. She wants me to look at evolution running and pose running to try and get away from the heel strike.  Also a brand new set of strength exercises for my hips and quads...and she wants me to work on my core strength.  UGH..My stomach muscles have enough of an issue carrying my belly around all day..they do not need to exercise also!

Leah - I hope your chip was minor.  I too have a dentist appointment today, crossing my fingers for no cavities.

Scott - can you use those elipticle machines to log more "running" time until your form gets better?  Good luck.

Kiri - I'm so impressed... I think a piepalooza would do me in!  Also, training during your layover, that's hard core!

Swim class and run went great.  Bought a new pair of running shoes and love them!  Mizuno something or other... grey and orange.  Hallelujah, a company that makes running shoes in something other than pink and light blue.   Todays work out is a bike ride, so I'm biking to the dentists (10 miles) then up to the gym from there to pick up my car (20 miles the long way)  I know I really shouldn't break it up, but for today it will have to do.

Happy training!

Is anyone doing any sort of year-long goal, like a New Year's Resolution?  I have found that fitness/weight loss resolutions don't work.  The best resolution I ever had was the year that I resolved that if I needed gasoline, I would fill my car at night and not wait for the morning.  It was wonderful.  I did it for one full year and then fell apart after that.  I am trying to think of a resolution sort of like that.

I am also thinking of something like biking 2010 miles in 2010 or something like that.  Maybe figure something out for meters or minutes.  Anyone have ideas?

I did the CrossFit class tonight. It was a good workout and it was quite fun. I'm definitely going back.

Hey gang!  I'm exhausted an it is only Tuesday.  It is going to be a rough road for me until Christmas.  Too much to do and too little time!  I swam today and will hit the bike tomorrow.

This weekend's ride was great.  We did a super hilly ride and I can tell I'm getting stronger.  I'm still far from fast but feeling a bit of improvement was nice.  I like the new seat.  No soreness.  I'm still a little anxious to see what would happen on a 60 miler.

I've been doing well with my food logging.  Even though I've logged a ton of exercise time this week I don't think I lost my 2 pounds.  I'll know for sure tomorrow.  If I didn't lose, I am going to take my calories down a bit as Kiri and Debb suggested.

I've got a lot of nervous energy for the HIM right now.  It is going to be a wild ride!

I'm a New year's resolution girl.  I admit it.  I love the idea of starting fresh and trying something new.  This year my resolutions are (1)  Do a better job with my finances; (2)  Continue to eat healty and exercise - I'd like to lose about 20 more pounds and I know this is the way to go;  (3) Try to get more sleep; and (4) Train smarter by doing more research.  One more - I should probably try to add some strength training/cross fit to my plan!

Hey Ladies and SCOTT!!

Has it really been that long since I posted?!?! I apologize, it's starting to get hectic here at work since I'm now beginning to review public comments received on a regulation we're working on so for the next couple of weeks around the holidays I'll be a bit crazy (OK, crazier than normal). I've been getting in some runs and I'm officially back on the Weight Watchers band wagon as of Saturday. I haven't been in over 2 months so a gain of 5 pounds is fine by me! I weighed in at 215..yuck. But I've got to log what I eat so I'm not shoving any and everything into my mouth mindlessly!

Last night I got a little over 3 miles in with the cold and windy weather. I had my compression shirt on underneath a long sleeved tech, running tights and my balaclava...I pretty much looked like a porky ninja or a life size body condom...add to that lovely visual my headlamp and I probably looked like I was digging a tunnel out of Alcatraz!

My goal is to post my workouts and get more spinning classes and swimming in!!! I've got the Celtic Solstice this weekend which is just over 5 miles. Since I'm a back-of-the-packer I told my friends to save me some spiced wassail!!! I want something WARM when I'm done!!

I'll post my runs today and tonight I'm going to try another spinning class at my gym!

Keep up the great work everyone!! You keep me motivated!!
