No worries about elephants or anything like that ![]() Haha...I could try to teach you...I won't promise anything but I might have to take you up on the boyfriend offer...haha...then I could have a husband (as my gay friend proposed to me on the weekend) and a boyfriend..haha! (I'm fairly certain there is a Sex and the City episode where this sort of happens) ![]() I don't really have to worry about elephants anymore...cause he's "busy" now on sat after a facebook message he sent me... ![]() ![]() |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() vent time! I need thearapy! I spent last night at a friends house to ensure that I would not have the excuse of possibly icy roads to use to not do my race. We had a lovely evening. DH drove up and we all went out to dinner, visited, etc. I got up just fine, not worried and kinda looking forward to the race with full knowledge that I would very likely be the last one in, yet before cut off time. Okay, I can deal with that. No sweat on the distance. The course was much flatter than the route I usually use for my 10 K runs so I figured I would probably do well and have fun even. Then I drove over and had to circle around for a good bit looking for a place to park. I found a nice space close to the race start (extra bonus) with plenty of time to check in. The weather was fine 38 and cloudy with no wind. So, what was the problem..... me and my sad little mind. I had a horrible feeling of nasuea, and panic overcome me. Why? All of those RUNNERS. there was NOBODY who looked like me. Sure there were older folks and younger folks and all sorts of folks in between. They were all (as I had feared) greyhounds, Arab race horses, cheetahs. There were no turtles to be seen. I do mean none. Not even the bystanders. I could not bring myself to even get out of the car. The DH was en route to be my fan and almost there when I called him and told him I couldn't do it. He did his best to get me to reconsider but I could not breathe. We met nearby and he assured me it was all okay. It was not. As I drove toward home, humiliated, I felt the panic and nausea abate. I got home and ran a 10 K about as fast and sure as usual all by myself with no one watching me. That was the problem- people watching or even seeing me while I was running. I figure, since I can't run in a burka (can I?) The only thing to do is to make myself look like other people. Becoming more "runner-like" or "athletic-like". I have heard (and believe, truly) all the stories- "no one cares, you are one step up from folks not running", yada yada yada. doesn't help. Since I am not going to give up running (and biking and minimally swimming) I am going to have to do something. So, until we find a nice cool-max tri-suit burka (or invisibility cloak) here comes the new me, before my 1/2 marathon. I just have to get over this obvious (not fear) but phobia. Thanks for listening Ghoulies. I am going to start to tear apart the kids rooms (they are both in college and gone now) to make an office for DH. be back tomorrow. My thoughts are with you. What Dee said. Robin, you are officially invited to come run with me at a 10k of your choice in NYC. Lodging included (warning, you'll probably have to put up with a cat or two). First of all, I am slow, slow, slow. Check my logs if you have any doubt. I'm a wogger. We will find a fun race in Central Park. And while I can't promise someone will be running in a burka, I have seen them in the past. In fact, I was quite amazed that she wanted to run so much that she would be out in that heavy outfit and not sure how she was breathing (this was summer) And because it is Central Park, you will see so many bizarre outfits/piercings/tats/costumes that you can rest assured no one...and I mean no one...will pay you the slightest bit of attention. And I will run with you every step of the way. Best of all, the Casa de Carroll is stocked with some very nice wines right now. Sorry you had a bad day. They will get better. And pick a race. Ok, just checked your logs and I'll have to step it up a bit to keep up with you. Speedy. Edited by kcarroll 2010-01-23 2:38 PM |
