Scotty,

How many miles are on the  Progrids?  I find I need to change shoes around the 300 mile mark cause that's when I notice the little aches and pains in my legs.   I have done best wit Brooks Adrenalines so far.  Think I'm on my fourth pair of them.

ETA...this month Runner's World has a great article with shoe reviews.

I have had some similar problems, but it could be because with all your training you could be building your muscles differently than before.  So while you don't know it, you could be running differently and different shoes feel different.  I have also heard of people breaking down shoes very quickly.  Maybe the shoes that work now just offer better support for how you run now.

I just noticed in the last month or two I am running on the outside of the right shoe.  I am almost convinced this is what is causing all my knee pain.  I have custom orthotics and all kinds of foot problems.

Great job in your races Carrie and Scott!

The mystery of why a shoe works at first and then doesn't is puzzling.  Maybe how it wore down after using it for awhile?  I had the same issue and discovered I should have been running in neutral shoes all along.

Does the Mizuno have more forefoot cushioning than the Saucony?  If they are the same, is one more firm than the other?  Do they have the same wear pattern?  Answers to these questions might help you find the solution.

What do you guys do for nasty chafe burns?  Got one yesterday on my arm from rubbing on my tri top and bra.  Hurts like hell.  Apparently the adrenaline of the race doesn't let you know this is happening.

Congrats on your races!

Regarding the shoes, I had the opposite problem with my Saucony's (I have the Progrid Guide 2's, though).  I hated them at first... They were too stiff and made my feet, ankles, and arches hurt.  But then after I logged maybe 50-ish miles on them, they were perfect!  I'm not sure if that's typical of running shoes, but it seems like they come out of the box stiffer and loosen up as you wear them (never had that issue with my Asics).  Sorry, I don't really have a solution for you, besides just going back to your Mizunos or trying other brands/styles...

Your going to laugh when I say this but, normally I put oitment on it before I go to bed. It is actually a diaper rash oitment that says it helps with chafing. It normally does a pretty good job and is just still a little red in the morning.

I did actually take a more detailed look at the two shoes. To me, the Mizuno and the Sacuny tend to have the same type of forefoot cushioning. They both feel about the same firmness too. The only major difference I see is the Mizuno has a narrower toe box and hugs my foot a tighter, which doesn't bother me and I like. The sacouny seems to have wider toe box, doesn't hug it as closely and seems to let my feet spread out a little bit which never bother me at first either. The sacouny only has about 130 miles on it too.  I did order myself a new pair of Mizuno's today becasue they felt so much better during that race.

So far the ease back into training is going well.....I kept my run shorter this morning and didn't really push my pace on the bike trainer tonight (thunderstorms) .  Gives me some room to hope.

scotty930 - 2010-06-27 5:03 PM So my race went quite well today. Here is the link for the race report:

Metlife Duathlon 6/27

Here is my race report from my first HIM also. I finally got around to finishing that up and posting it:

Ironman Kansas 70.3 6/6

My race today went quite well. It was a 2 mile run, 11 mile bike, 2 mile run. My time was a 59:28 which put me in 2nd for my age group. It was a great race for me considering I took two weeks off and this past week before the race was my first week back. It was quite humid when the race started but by the time I finished, the storm that was blowing in, had cooled off everything.

Fantastic race!  Great job!

I don't have any real good suggestions to add to what has already been said.  I've had shoes that I've loved out of the box, only to have them cause some pain/issues down the road.  Then there's my current pair that I absolutely did not like right away (I actually considered immediately buying something else), but after sticking with them for 80 miles or so I really came to like them.  Shoes/Feet are fickle

I was just about to ask the same question as I'm mentally ready for the weekend already.

I'm taking a few extra days off next week and heading up to my parents' place to spend some time with the fam.  My sister and her family are in the middle of a move from San Francisco to DC and are stopping over for a few days so I figured I'd spend some extra time with the niece and nephews while they're around.

Other than that, try to get some semblance of training in and just relax

No races for me.  I'm heading over to NYC with my mom tomorrow until Monday to visit my sis, cousins, and friends.  So tonight will be packing (since I always wait until the last minute!) then heading on the train over to my parents' house so I can head over to the airport with my mom in the morning.

The hotel we're staying at has a nice fitness center and is close to Central Park, so I'll probably be doing a some lifting and definitely running while I'm out there.  I may try to see if they have spin bikes, but I'm not a huge fan of indoor stationary cardio equipment Yell

No races for me.  I am doing a brick Saturday morning.  My friend susan is getting into tris so she wants to do the brick with me.  Not sure she will be crazy about meeting me at 6 AM but I need to do it early.

Thinking about doing OWS at Chesdin this Sunday afternoon.....Chesdin isn't really a lake, it's a dammed off section of the Appomatax River, it's pretty nasty but no worse than the James River I'm sure.
