smithe68 - 2012-05-20 5:28 PMIt went really well today, all things considered, headwind the entire way out and pretty much a side wind for most of the way back.  Still managed a solid ride that I can be happy with on super tired legs.  Wont ever do it again though, running a very hard half (for me that means a 1:31.48) the day before, plus an extra few home was a bit much.
In my opinion it's much easier to run long the day after a long ride than it is to ride long the day after a long run. I don't ever run first as usually neither of the workouts are great when that happens. Biking on tired from running legs is awful!!

X 2. I'd much rather run long after riding than the other way around. Strong work this weekend you guys.

So I went to CdA this weekend with 7 of my teammates.  The weather was awesome and the whole place was full of others doing the same!!!!  I rode both loops of the bike course and everything went great!!!!  I am hoping for a 7 hour bike at Ironman and I rode a 6:59 so I will take that.  I rode one loop in March and the winds were at my back heading out 95 but this weekend they were at my back coming back 95.  Anyone know which is typical?  Felt like the 22 miles out 95 were all uphill but coming back was a blast!!!! Except the sidewinds coming down the really big hill kinda scared the crap out of me!!!  We all brought our wetsuits but decided it just wasn't worth it.  Saw lots of people getting in the lake but none for very long.  Used the lake to soak after the ride on saturday and the run on sunday.  It worked good for that!!  HaHa.  Still feels pretty cold to me.  Getting super excited now that I have the whole 112 under my belt!!

Strong work!  Probably saw you out there at some point on Saturday.  The normal wind is what we had Saturday.  There are times when we get a north wind like you experienced before but most likely race day will be pretty similar to what Saturday was like.

i do my long runs on Thursday before work.  long ride on the weekend.  gives me at least a day for my legs to recover from the run.  Thursday's are very tiring at work.

You guys are all great! I feel like I am way behind all of you. I did a long swim, ride and short run sat. But I'm not getting 100 miles on the bike like most of you. I do get inspired from reading what everyone is doing, it really gets me going to get the training in, so thanks for that. Keep up the great work.

I am following the Joe Friel plan and he has you always run long Saturday ride long Sunday. The rational that he says is that most people do it the other way because they have been told that it helps your body learn to run on tired legs. He calls BS and says that the fatigue that will be in your legs a day later is not the same fatigue that is there right after you get off the bike and so by riding long first it opens you up to a greater chance of injury. It seems to make sense to me and I have been real happy with his plan and the level of preparedness I have.  There are definitely a 100 ways to skin a cat though!!

What kinda winds are we tAlking about here? There is a group of us coming from San Diego to do couer d'elene and we all have PTSD from the sustained head winds of 25-30mph during the entire bike course this year at St George Ironman.
What are we talking for Couer d'elene winds? 15mph? Or less? Hopefully!? I'd be ok if i never felt wind again!

Got in my last century before the race. I kinda felt like I'm readyfor Kona. 95 degree heat with 30mph gusting winds. I feel pretty good about my nutrition plan. I have one final long run to go then rest and taper. We're getting close!

I ran 2.5 hours Sunday on tired legs after my 100 on Saturday followed by a 30 minute run. They were 15 slow miles. I do believe Friel when he says don't run more then 2.5 hours as the risk of injury increases greatly....Don't know about running long first all the time, thinking about it we would probably be better off switching back and forth stressing our body's in different ways.

Rest day Monday was needed more then ever for me though I got in the pool a little bit

Since you guys that have ridden the new course keep talking about how hilly it is, I am determined to prepare for hills.  Yesterday, I rode Assault on Mt. Mitchell - 103 miles, 11,000 feet of elevation change, with the last 24 miles ascending from 1,100 feet to 6,500+.  Next up - Mountains of Misery on Sunday.  102 miles of 10,000+ feet of cumulative elevation change.  I may not be able to swim, run or bike fast in CdA but I will be ready to climb!

I'd like to know this too!  Hills I can do, but wind breaks me down mentally.

I have this same "problem", hills don't bother me but, wind does a number on me when biking or running.  I know the course was different last year but, I don't remember it being real windy while I was out on the course as a volunteer and, the one time I have ridden the new course this year, there wasn't any wind to speak of.

Is the morning sun a factor in the swim?

Last year I did IMAZ and we swan straight into the rising sun. Tinted goggles really helped. Can any of the veterans say where the sun will be?

As far as the wind goes... I've been on the course 15 times and it different every time. I've done a few really windy days but I'd say those were only 15-20 mph sustained winds. Nothing like st George. I've alo seen it come from every direction. Best case scenario the wind will come out of the north and be very light. For the swim if it's sunny wear tinted goggles. The first turn bouy has you go directly into the sun and it can be impossible to see the next bouy. Thankfully there are always thousands of people heading in the same general direction so sighting is pretty much a non issue. Unless of course you are a front of the pack swimmer. Then you better swim straight or you'll be leading the rest of us in the wrong direction.

HA HA HA

That won't be me.  I'm planning on waiting a minute or two after the pack gets in to get in myself.  A calmer swim is worth a few minutes lost to me.

The only problem with waiting a minute or two is that you lose that 2000 person draft. If you just go at the gun you barely have to swim until the first turn buoy 900 yards away.

Me too, I was going to hang back myself, but huge draft will pay huge dividends in my marginal swimming abilities!

Besides, the washing machine is part of the experience.  It's something that not many people experience or can even put into words.  It's pretty cool in my opinion (at least when you look back at it lol). Might not be cool during it.

Hmmm.... good point.

I've heard that CdA has one of the worst swim starts of all IMs.  True?

As far as the swim: where your place yourself at the start has a huge impact. I did last years race and am a mid-pack swimmer (finished in 1:22). I placed myself at the extreme right. My thinking is everyone is going to turn left at the bouy and being in the middle of that is pretty crazy. Yes I got bumped and it was very busy but it was tolerable. You have to EXPECT to get bumbed. The first 10mins really wasnt that bad as everyone got going. My worst hit was a kick to my right hamstring. You can also be faiirly defensive and if you notice feet close (you will!) then maybe keep your arm forward a bit longer as a 'blocker' incase you get kicked.

If your watch the youtube videos notice that it clears out fast after only 30-40 seconds. The other problem with waiting is then when you get into the water you will be fighting with the people who 'frog kick'. The frog kickers are worse to swim with because their legs go out alot more than a true crawl swimmer.

Yes CdA tends to be the most intense swim start of all IMs. The beach isnt very wide, and its pretty narrow so its crowded. I watched at IM Canada and it was alot better. Plus CdA being a 2 loop course puts everyone closer.

As a side note the official water temp was 54.7 degrees. Coldest in the 9 years of the event. At the start they said the temp was "around 58 degrees".....

Buts its an Ironman...its not supposed to be easy. If you trained consistantly, learned what nutrition works, and are able to relax during your race it will turn out fine. Expect issues. And deal with them.
