Ran the 3M half mary course this AM.  It was crowded with lots of people practicing.  I did OK but have lots of issues to figure out.  Blisters from my socks, chafing on my neck, back and arms from my camelbak, slight pain in my outer kneecap after mile 11.7.  Found a good running partner though and we're going to do a longer run next weekend.

Joe, congrats on your 10K!  That's awesome.  Glad so many of you are doing the challenge.  Isn't it cool?

Jen, the ISM race saddle is not too wide for me and I'm small like you.

Scott, I fixed your days.

Mark Z, I miss you in the challenge.  Need some pics!

Was the camelback just for today?  Assume you don't plan on racing with it?

i asked about Thrive diet 4 or 5 days ago.

Getting to a reasonably competitive weight for my age and gender is most difficult challenge.  I am really working on making healthy food choices.  i do better abstaining completely from processed foods and white sugar.  I am not sure that it could defend science behind "sugar addiction", but i know that i have major carbohydrate and sugar cravings that only are reduced when i stick to a "clean diet."  does anyone have any good resources for clean nutrition plans?

Yes, read Maffettone.

Jackie, thank you. So nice of you to say that. Believe me, I would be in it, but I have no bike, no bike trainer, no water, nada. Running here still gives me a headache afterwards and while I do it so I don't forget the moves, I limit it to 3x/wk. I couldn't do it every day.

Picture... since I am not a part of this competition I feel bad. But the competitive spirit within made me engage others in it. They were a bit too young and kind of slow, but what the heck - it was fun!

On a different note, today we celebrate the first week of the challenge. Ok, at least I do. It is hard for me to find time to put my workouts in so a week straight without forced days off is a victory, and I'm pretty sure that for many different reasons it most be hard for most of you.

So, congratulations to all, including those that didn't put all seven days for committing yourselves to this. Those that are doing the challenge for the first time will be gladly surprised at the end of the month of your own achievements and the fitness that frequency will give you.

Please don't think for a minute I don't advocate for rest. Days off are needed in order for tissue to regenerate and also to get a mental break, but every once in a while it is good to shock the system like this. By no means do both high frequency and long duration, that spells I-N-J-U-R-Y and at the very least burnout.

Keep training smart.

I think one thing that has finally sunk in is that if I lower intensity I can workout with much more consistency and frequency.  A lot of my rides on the trainer have been active recovery type rides.  A very high % of my runs have been at recovery type pace and Zone 1 type HRs.  I will strongly agree that in the past my easy workouts were never even close to easy enough.  It's really pretty neat. My legs are a bit tired so next week I'm going to try to adjust my schedule to include that novel concept of swimming.

I'm looking forward to seeing what type of a base I can build and what impact it has once I start doing some speed workouts in March for my Half Marathon.

8 mile run with run club in AM. 1:14:07. 1 hour (and 1 second) trainer ride watching football. I've learned from watching football that if I buy a Chevy truck, I will be a great dad, and that if I get two bathtubs put side by side in the backyard, my wife will find me so irresistible that if we are raking leaves and accidentally bump into each other, well, no further leaf raking will occur. I had no idea.

If you only train long and slow, your body will become good at exactly that. I agree that your biggest issue was running too hard, but what you were doing is going hard from the get go for the entire run. What I'm telling you now is to go easy but run your rear off for 20", rest 40" and repeat 6 or 7 times with a warmdown at the end. You will love the results.

Crazy day, but for the challenge I would have done nothing, thank you. My son had an  away game early in the morning ( 1hour away) Daughter #2 had an away game in the afternoon (1.5 hours away). I got back late, and squeezed in a 35"37" ride, just spinning. Similiar day tomorrow. Hopefully, I will get my but out of bed for an early run then early evening bike.

Elizabeth,

Did you see my post about changing your settings? Go to settings (the wrench), then hit the "forum settings" tab under user information. Then the second option is "Use rich editor for blog and forum posts?". This has to be set to "no". Then hit submit. After that, just copy and pasting should work.

Okay - thanks!  I was going to start the Hanson Half Marathon plan at the end of January to finish the plan on June 3rd for the Dexter Ann Arbor Half.  That plan has speed work starting after a few weeks.  I will start to incorporate a bit in my weekly runs now.

A little slow to post this as I didn't have time to log my run before I went to work last night, but better late than never.  Short run to the pool (where I then watched other people swim).  32min 22sec.  Tried to keep HR to 147, but there's a giant hill which I just couldn't get up without my HR going mad.

Had an interesting night at work.  For friday and saturday night shifts we have to provide a few people to help out in the city centre for "night time economy" aka pubs/clubs/bars (drunk people).  Tonight was my turn through.  I thought my arms had recovered fine from my swim session on Friday until I had to restrain a woman who decided to try to headbutt my colleague.  Turns out my arms are still a little fatigued.  They felt like lead for about half an hour afterwards...  It's amazing how you don't notice these things until you exert yourself!

Rachel,

That sounds like a pretty interesting night! Smile

Kudos for keeping up with the training despite the shift changes. You're doing great.

Elizabeth,

Did you see my post about changing your settings? Go to settings (the wrench), then hit the "forum settings" tab under user information. Then the second option is "Use rich editor for blog and forum posts?". This has to be set to "no". Then hit submit. After that, just copy and pasting should work.

Thanks. I just changed it.

Would anybody be kind enough to look at my log, do the math and update my totals? I was about to do it and I got called out to Waco on a pipeline emergency just after finishing my run. I hope this doesn't ruin my bid on the challenge... Right now I'm on the road
