There is another thread that talks about the importance of pedaling in circles (or lack of importance depending on what you believe). In my limited experience I have found that I spent last year just mashing down on my pedals as hard as I could. I also was getting hamstring pain after about 1 hr. Really bad pain. Then I read a book that explained you should drive your knee up to your handlebars. I started doing this and it started taking strain off my hams. I was driving down so hard that at 6 oclock i was still pressing down. Wasting energy. Anyway, does anyone else have any things they have learned about pedaling that could help us beginners? Do you have access to a computrainer? I do not. I know the idea behind computrainer but how does it work? |

Pro 4672 Nutmeg State | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED This was in today's Hartford Courant and I really liked it:
As for motorists, "share the road" is not just a pleasantry, it is the law. Bicycles are not restricted to road shoulders and bike lanes. They are allowed on the roads, and can enter a center travel lane to turn left. Connecticut's "three-foot law" gives cyclists the right to that distance around themselves, even if they must use the travel lane to maintain three feet from an obstruction on the right. |

Do you have access to a computrainer? I do not. I know the idea behind computrainer but how does it work? Computrainer has a feature called the "Spin Scan," which shows the actual power and efficiency in your pedal stroke. You can see how it works here. What I was thinking is that if you really think there are issues with your pedal stroke, you should have it analyzed, which will give you better a idea of what you need to do to fix it. I asked a friend who is a coach in Atlanta where you might be able to get an analysis done in Atlanta, here was his response: "The Sport Factory in Roswell or All3Sports in Dunwoody also Cadence bikes or Peachtree bikes in Sandy Springs. One of those places shld def be able to help him. I wld prob start w/The Sport Factory, I know they do lots of different testing there. Hope that helps" There are lots of drills you can do, but you really need to know where the issues are in order to be doing the right drills. |

Extreme Veteran 585 Price, UT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Thanks-I missed this group too I am a 56 yr old female. I have been doing tris for two years. I live in a small town in rural Utah and am married with two grown children and three grandchildren. Two live close and one who is turning eight did her first tri this last summer. I am signed up for a 1/2 Mary in March, and 2 tris-one in May and one in September. I am rehabbing a chronic calf injury now. I am a landscape artist and hold two part time jobs. My goals this year are to get healed up and hit a sub 3 hour 1/2 mary and complete both of my tris as well as lose 15 lbs for good. Terry |

Master 2151 Johns Creek, Georgia | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Terry - welcome back! We missed you. Kelly - Georgia passed the 3 foot law recently, but I see not difference in how obnoxious cars are around bikes. Most drivers are pretty good, but others still try to buzz you, I don't get it. Last weekend I was riding on a straight flat road with a small shoulder. A big truck was coming from the other direction and the guy honked his horn. I looked up to smile and wave (thinking he was going to give me a thumbs up for being hard core and riding in the cold). Nope, he did put a finger up, but it was not his thumb! I was completely shocked, didn't know quite what to do. Why are some people so angry??? I was just glad he was not going the direction I was going, because I'm sure if he had to go around me he would have been more angry. |

I ran out of bananas and only had clementines to work with this morning, and I ended up eating big clumps of pulp mixed with kale. GROSS. I did the same exact thing yesterday! It was awful! I think I'm going back to my regualr green monsters. Any combination of chocolate, pb, and banana with some almond milk, a whole bunch of spinach, hemp protein, chlorella and maca powder. DELICIOUS. Carrie - Congrats! Kelly - Thanks for shipping the helmet! I can't wait to try it out! Also - Lululemon ROCKS. What are the benefits of chlorella, again? I remember reading about it in the Thrive diet book, but I can't recall the details. High in protein, essential fatty acids, amino acids, and B12. Also good for recovery and boosting the immune system |

Extreme Veteran 585 Price, UT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED joined a masters swim class last week and already feeling like I am getting somewhere. Been drinking green smoothies for breakfast everymorning and feel like I have more energy. I use unsweetened almond milk, unsweetened greek yogurt, fresh baby spinach a small scoop of vanilla protien powder and frozen or fresh fruit. The spinach is actually not bad, but don't use frozen spinach and I think the exra iron has helped me with that fatigue. Oh yeah I throw in some flax too |

Another mythical Triathlon creature. If you wanna go faster push harder on the pedals for a longer period of time, if you wanna look pretty and go slow, pedal in circles. keep in mind, that pushing down on the pedal does not mean straight down, moreso forward from your toe, almost like throwing the pedal forward with your foot. If you look at some of the best cyclists EVER, they all have ugly pedal strokes and were all pushers, even Lance with his high cadence was a pusher.
Spin scan is a waste of time and money.
Your legs are more than likely unbalanced, so are mine, instead of working one to equal the other (which is probably not 10% difference anyway) work both to get stronger. OH, and i think one leg drills are useless FWIW. |

Pro 4528 Norwalk, Connecticut | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED On the hamstring pain issue, that has me confused, as USUALLY, when you cycle, you are engaging the glutes and quads, not so much the hammies. That is strange, and i have no thought or answer for that?? is it possible that you are pedaling past 6 oclock?? I know some triathletes like to Slide/scrape their foot through the bottom of the stroke (and Coach Troy in Spinervals), and that certainly engages the hammies. Your quads are the stronger muscles and the time you spend pedaling past 6 you should already be pushing down with the other leg to relieve strain/start recovery on the first leg. Cyclists are know for having too strong quads and too weak (relativley) hammies, it is what causes a variety of overuse injuries such as hamstring tendonitis, piroformis, dead butt syndrome etc. |

Its not a "common" cycling injury so I think there might be something else going on (it could even be a bike fit issue). |

I am going for a bike fit tomorrow at the LBS - is there anything I should specifically ask/do? Can you give me any advice before I go? Thanks! Here's the write-up / pictures from my bike fitting: http://somerandomthursday.blogspot.com/2011/01/bike-fitting.html First off wear a tri suit so they can see the specific angles. Essentially the bike fitter should take a serious of measurements and possibility do some flexibility tests to determine your "ideal" position. Usually then the bike fitter sets this position up on a fit bike or your bike and then has you do some easy pedaling to see how your body responds to the position. Once you have the position dialed in, if you're on a fit bike, the fitter should transfer the measurements to your bike. Depending on how extensive the service is, it can take anywhere from an hour to 4 hours. Also remember if you're making big changes to your bike fit it may take a while to adjust.

Pro 4672 Nutmeg State | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Funny story. I go to ride the trainer and Shaun and I can't figure out why the computrainer won't work. We keep trying to re-set and get a new connection but nothing is working. When we can't get the real course mode to work, I decide to just ride it in erg mode. Erg mode doesn't work either. We finally realize that the wires are falling apart. Apparently one of our cats decided that she wanted to chew through the wires. The wire was severed in two places. Now Shaun gets to rewire today. I love my cats (and in particular the still kitten-ish one who did this) but today I want to hurt her. Why must cats chew wires? |

It actually reminded me of Jorge's program, as I got my heartrate up into the 160s and 170s during some of the intervals. Really solid workout. Easy recovery run this afternoon. I was in the pool last night, and while my body feels strong, my form really sucked. Lots of work to do there. We're in the middle of a blizzard here. 2 feet of snow predicted for the Cleveland snow belt. Good stuff I'm growing out this pixie cut into something that's chin length, and I'm starting to look like Justin Bieber. Totally not hot. Off to look for hats so I can hide...... |
