Fantastic!!! Great work!

You made me curious, and I just looked, and I'm in the same boat as you. Tomorrow I'll pass my 2011 swim totals, I'm already 50% ahead of last years bike milies, and just 50 miles shy of my 2011 run totals.  It just kind of sneaks up you .

Jim, great job on the 105 mile bike!  Sounds like you are in good shape heading into your last 4 wks!

Mike, I can feel the excitement building.  You're almost at the starting line....healthy, which is half the battle.

Mike and Jford, really nice stats you're putting up this year.  I'm always amazed at how motivating those graphs/numbers can be.  Nice that you are seeing the benefits as well!

You made me curious.

          2011                2012

B        1,724               580

R           972               708

S     167,770           93,879

Ha, can you tell why my bike hasn't improved?  My choice to be run focused over the winter/spring, then just as I was ramping the bike up, the whole frame crack debacle, so I've lost most of a month of biking.  I could have hit the spin classes or dusted off my old comfort bike sooner, but I allowed myself to just be ticked off for a while.  That will soon change once new bikie arrives....hopefully next week...in time for my next sprint tri....which I kinda wish I had not signed up for.  It's an invitational.  Mostly a marketing gimick.  Had to place top 10 in AG in a race by the same company to qualify.  I signed up because it is in my home town and part of the swag is a running jacket and I don't have one of those .  Anyway, part of me thinks it will be nice because maybe a bit less crowded, and part of me thinks with my inevitably slow bike time and transitions, I just might be DFL in my AG.  I know...DFL>DNF>DNS.

I hour run this morning at a 10:18 pace, and then this evening longest open water swim every, nearly 3000 yards in 1:03.  Tomorrow morning 60 mile bike.  Essentially in a 24 hour period, I'll do more exercise than I did in the year 2010 and 2011 combined.

Thanks guys for your kind words! I feel like I am in great shape, but nervous I am not yet IM ready! When I decided to do this race, I knew I did not have the base for it but I am the kind of guy that figures it's a good experience no matter the outcome!

Today I did a 1 mile swim, 30 bike then 5 mile run brick. Felt good but definitely tired legs! I'm out of town much of next week so trying to get in as much as I can just in case I can't train much next week!

Excellent stuff everyone. 105 is killer.

I had an awesome 30mile bike this morning at a 16:19 pace. I felt strong and I like that. I made sure I had enough calories in me from breakfast, then used GU on the ride. What a fantastic difference. Yesterday my run kicked my butt and I think it was due to lack of food. But i still managed to finish sooner than my planned time. This is a big week, then my recovery week. Feel like I just had one, but I will take it anyway in prep for the. Ext build phase. If all goes well I will be signing up for cda IM 2013 in less than two weeks; super excited.

Great job on the 105m bike!

James - I know what you mean about trying to read training plans. I would read that as 6 30 sec sprints with 1 min. in between. Way to get it done this year! I think I have passed my bike and swim from last year. Run is getting close.

Jim - which IM are you doing? I bet four more weeks of training will help curb your doubts and then race day will arrive and your body will know what to do!

Steve - So are those swim times showing an increase in your swim speed? Are the exercises you are doing paying off?

Mike - I love your almost daily posts prepping us with your for the big day. Keeps me excited with you!! I do love realizing how much can be gained over time and be able to look back as say, "wow, this is a place I never thought I would be". But the reality is you are here, right now, because of a lot of time and sacrifice. You are gonna have a great race!

Carol - can't wait til you get your new bike!

Larry - What can I say? - awesome day of training for you!

Jim, you get in another 1-2 bike rides in the 90+ range, a couple swims in the 4000 + range and a couple runs in the 16 to 17 mile range and you will be gtg.  However, you will need to pace yourself.  You are coming in with enough to get the job done, but you need to pace z2 all day.  You keep it even and steady and you have the time to finish. Oh and no one really feels ready for an IM.  The whole OMG factor is just part of the emotional rollercoster that goes along with the training.  Make sure you have your race nutrition figured out and then it is just getting through this last build cycle or 2 and then it is all in the bank.  The race is just pacing and keeping the calories and fluids at the right level.  Thats it.  You cant win the race on race day, it is already in the bank by the time you get to the starting line.  You can only lose it by not following the game plan.  So follow it and your body will remember all your training and cary you through.

Oh! Should have checked my logs before I did my swim this AM - I'm 115 yards short of my full year 2011 total after today. I would have done 5 move lengths to get over the hump if I'd known! .

Anyway, I'm done training for the race. Hay is in the barn, next 2 days of rest/packing, and Saturday is the race I've worked toward for 5 months.

Congrats on a great bike Samantha!! I am doing Vineman Full up in Santa Rosa! Me and Mitch did it last year (Steve too) and I met my doom at mile 18 of the marathon. I had a lot of foot problems going on and I literally could not take another step! I have made many changes since, the biggest being I switched to Newtons and it seems my foot issues have resolved so I am very hopeful for a finish!!

Thank you Steve! Starting tomorrow, I will up my swims to 4000 yds. I still have a few kinks in my nutrition to work out though, I'll run it by you later for suggestions!!

Mike, your swim is solid, your bike is so/so an your run is subpar.  So that means you can swim your swim at a decent pace, you need to hold back on the bike and stay at a sustainable pace that is not too hot and then survive the run.  You may consider some run walk for the 2nd half if you are starting to really drag after mile 6.  Something like a jog 4 min walk 1 min for miles 7-13 may make sense.  You will have to go by feel.  Do not go out hot on the run, just steady and see how long you hold without having to jog/walk .  You will finish fine, it is just whether you have to walk any on the run that is the question.  The better you pace the more likely you can put your head down and finish it off.

So I am getting ready to do my workout today and my wife is all so what ya doing today?  I'm all a 35 mile bike or so.  She is oh ok so a short bike ride, any swim or run?  I'm all nope mostly a recovery day.  Nice to have 35 miles be a short bike ride again.

Luck to our racers, make us proud.

New bike is in, new bike is in, new bike is in!!!!  They're putting it together tomorrow, and I'll get fitted and take it home on Friday .

I'm calling it done on swimming in my gym pool.  The last session had my sinuses closed for almost 2 full days.  Hopefully its just a bromine allergy and chlorine will suit me better.  Think I may try the city pools at lap swim time.  They are outdoors, which is nice, but I'll have to go in the evenings.  Or I can swim around lunchtime in the HS natatorium in a neighboring suburb.  Really prefer to work out in the mornings, and the gym was really close to home, so this is definitely moving my cheese.

Samantha, great bike ride.  It's great when everything comes together.

Mike, I look forward to your posts on your HIM this weekend, as I will be there in 4 weeks.

I got a 60 mile bike ride in today, and just to mentally prepare myself, I threw in a 2 mile brick run.  I felt pretty good the whole time, which was nice.

Jim - Thanks! And Wow! I am super excited for you to hit this race again knowing your confidence is up and your training is too. Glad the new shoes seem to be doing the trick. I have a good friend doing the Vineman 1/2. She is actually one of the first people to teach me some running tricks and get me excited about it. She signed up with team in training. Anyway, it seems this will not be one of the things you have to regret not doing! Now I will (im)patiently wait to hear your race report

Mike - go get em' dude! Can't wait to hear all about it!

Carol - This is definitely a different year for me and my resolve to take on CDA IM has changed for a myriad of reasons - thank you for your encouraging words. Yes, yes, yes I am glad your new bike is in. LaughingI wish typing on a computer could give my excitement for you any justice. That's crummy about the pool thing. Changing up a routine you are used to is so hard, at least for me. It requires quite a bit of mental prep to get things switched around and working smoothly again. Change is only really good when it is piled up in a jar to pay for my vacation...bahahaha!

Steve - your dialogue with your wife cracked me up. You know I tell my friend about this guys I know who runs 10-15 miles when it is his rest week. They don't ever really know what to say! Ha!

Larry - You still have four weeks to go and you just did a 60 mile bike!?!? That is fantastic! And the brick is a little icing. You are gonna have such a great race!

Today was supposed to be my long run. I ate some breakfast, then headed to the gym. The rain was coming down like non-other today, so I decided to go treadmill. I got about 2 miles in and started feeling terrible. Like my blood sugar was dropping because I hadn't eaten enough. I didn't bring any GU because my long runs are still too short to bring food, so I switched to my short run just to get something done. I really thought I had eaten enough. I guess I need to start really focusing on the amount of calories I am taking in so I can know what I need to sustain peak building weeks. If anyone has thoughts or wisdom regarding this topic I would love to hear it. I do know the amount a person needs really varies and depends on over-all goals. I would like to shed some pounds, but I have kept my goal for training as far away from weight loss as possible so I don't deal with the discouragement of not losing weight. So I go by feel and try to make good decisions about what I eat. I am, however, trying to watch the amount of junk I am taking in because my training has convinced my brain that I can eat whatever I want. Grrr...anyway, I was dissappointed to bonk out on my long run because I thought it was gonna be a good one. Oh well, tomorrow is a brand new day. And maybe the weather will be decent on Saturday so I can do my long run outside instead of 6.5 on a treadmill..boring!

Thanks to one and all for the kind words of support. Hard to believe in 48 hours I'll be standing on the shore waiting for the horn to sound. I've found this group to be immensely helpful and inspiring. In particular, Steve's honest assessments of progress are great, straighforward truth. can't argue with his assessment of where I am now -- I've slacked on my run fitness since my half mary in late March, and Saturday will certainly be more, uh, 'interesting' because of it.  the plan for the race is to enjoy the swim - I'm concerned about going out too hard on this as I feel I can really kick butt on it, but we'll see. For the bike its all about pace -- (about 18-20 mph avg, but will adjust as necessary), then take the run slow to start, and assess where things are after a few miles. If I get off the bike and don't feel great, I may do a 8/1 run/walk thing right from the start so I have something left toward the end. I'd like to avoid an extended walking at any point, and keep moving. I'm SO SO looking forward to the finish line! Overall, its a stay positive, enjoy, persist, and conquer kind of day coming up.
