Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers - Open
Haven't decided yet on a plan. There are three to four options I am looking at. At the moment I've just been ramping up so I have a solid base to start. Strykergt is going to email me a plan, I was taking a look at the BT one, and there's one other I was looking at as well. Once I have a my phone handy I'll add the link. If anyone has recommendations I am definitely open to suggestions.

I'm also looking for any kind of "pre plan" plan that I could use. Currently my base is not very good so the last week or so has just been getting readjusted to regular training. I'm pretty happy with my progress so far, I ran for an hour on Monday and knocked out 7 miles so the endurance is coming back. I just don't know what kind of shape I really need to be in just to start a plan.

I put the Gale Bernhardt plan online here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ar5EpJvYM2b1dEs0VjFhZlR...

I followed the HIM plan a couple times. Haven't done a full yet.

I really liked the Bernhardt plan for my HIM. A friend was also following her IM plan and it was really working for him as well.

I should've looked at Ransick's spreadsheet before I posted this. The spreadsheet is a lot easier to follow than to follow her plan from her book. It must have taken a lot of time to type it all out? Thanks for the link to it. I'll likely use it myself starting in January.

Awesome spreadsheet. Appreciate all the feedback guys. On strength days I'm assuming it's high rep circuit training? Or are you going heavy legs for the overall output?

It took a while to enter it, but I used It every day when obsessing over HIM training, so it was well worth it. I'm an engineer and use Excel all the time so it wasn't too bad.

I didn't do any of the strength training. I concentrated on getting the swim, bike, run workouts in and skipped at least one swim workout a week. If you have the time to add the strength, go for it but I was pretty tired as it was.

How does the swim start at IMWI? Wave? Mass? Rolling?

IM planning, how exciting!

Bummer on the shingles.

Yay for the friend in remission!

So I am doing a sprint Sunday, my last tri of the season, just to feel fast after training so much all summer. (Somehow didn't feel too fast during the HIM!) The water temp is 73. To wetsuit or not to wetsuit? That is the question. I could borrow a friend's, but I've done colder swims without one before. Not sure how much time I will gain with it vs how much time it will take to put on/take off.

Who still has races coming up?

Anyone want to join me in a challenge? I am going to sign up for this one:

http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=501719

The way the challenges work, for those of you who don't know, is that people sign up and divide into two teams. You set a goal at the beginning of the month (October), and then record your own progress in a google spreadsheet as the month progresses. (The spreadsheet is up, but not active yet.) Your goal can be in minutes or distances in any tri sport and/or something else. At the end of the month, the team that is closer to their goal wins, and everyone puts a winning/losing comment in their signature. It's a fun way to motivate yourself and get others motivating you, too.

That competition sounds interesting. I'm game if strykergt is on my team. That man is a training machine. Also are you doing the giant acorn sprint?? Good luck on your race!

It a mass start so I anticipate some MMA in the water.

That sounds kinda cool! I think I might join in on that.

I've taken the last two weeks off and it's about time I started up with the training again :p

I wasn't feeling like running a 5K fun run that was scheduled for today (for a local charity) but I was thinking last night that I should run today so then I thought if I'm going to run why wouldn't I run the 5K. So, I broke down and went and registered for the run this morning.

It was really windy, cold and raining this morning so I dressed warmly. The run was just a simple out and back on a closed paved road 2.5km south into the strong wind then turning around and running back 2.5 km to the finish line. The rain stopped just before the start which was a welcome surprise because it was raining in the mountains all around us.

I was able to run at a very consistent pace according to my Garmin and the race course was exactly 5.00Km as well. I ran the whole route without any walking and as I crossed the finish line my time at 32:48 was 5 minutes faster than I ran the same course last year, Yay! I pushed myself as hard as I could hoping to beat 30 minutes but I couldn't quite maintain that speed.

Bearing in mind that this is a small race, $18 fee, they then fed us finishers coffee and pancakes and after we had all eaten they then awarded medals to the top 3 in each AG. There were a lot more older people this year than last year and my time is still slow so I was surprised to be called up for a 3rd place medal - a nice surprise.

After the medals were awarded and we were all heading for our vehicles the rain started again, perfect.

Guess what? I got on the podium too! I was 3rd in the Athenas today. Swim was decent (but I think I'll skip the wetsuit next time), bike was decent and run was (for me) awesome. Best 5k time by far. Will do RR after the kiddos are in bed!

Here's the race report.

Incidentally, I had to go coach my son's soccer team (six kids under 5) about 30 min after getting back from the race. Ugh I am so tired. And the house is a mess. But it was a great way to finish the season!

Now I really don't know what to do next. A friend wants me to do a half marathon with her in 7 weeks. I dunno...

For those of you who want to join the October challenge, you need to do 2 things:

1) go to the thread and introduce yourself.

2) go to the google docs page and enter your goals.

My goals for October are to run 70 miles and do 8 weight training sessions.

As the month progresses, you update the google document yourself and can see how both teams are doing. Friendly trash talking encouraged.

I read your race report and commented there but I just wanted to comment on wetsuits. I love my wetsuit and I know I am about 10% faster in an OWS with my wetsuit. At my last Olympic I swam the 1500m at 2:08/100m. When I was coming out of the water I felt I could have comfortably swum further but I also felt I could swim faster.

Now today, we swam a 300m TT in the pool and by the time I finished I was glad to stop and my time was 6:59 so 2:20/100m. So, I think swimming in a properly fitting wetsuit is faster and less fatiguing than pool swims (for me).

I think the longer your swim is the more important/valuable a wetsuit is but for a sprint distance you have to weigh the wetsuit advantage against the time to get the swimsuit off. Having strippers in your event would help a lot.
