tahrens - 2009-05-01 9:50 AM So here is the game plan for Saturday.  These are conservative times - given my sickness and lack of training this month - but I am ready to ROCK AND ROLL!!!!

Swim:  (1.2miles) = 45minutes
T1: = 5 minutes (don't know what the distance is from water to bike, plus I suck here)
Bike:  (56 miles) = 3 hours - 17mph average, this all depends on the headwinds - it is a flat course
T2:  2 minutes
Run: (13.1 miles) = 2:15 - 10:30min/mile pace

Total Goal: 6:07   so well say under 6:15.

Obviously you are feeling better!  I am glad to know that you are going to pull this off tomorrow.  I will be pulling for you.  Anyone wanting to place bets on the over under ...6hrs, I'll be the house

You saw John and I so far.  I'm in at 5:57. If I'm right, what are you going to pay me? Maybe come up here and develop my basement? You're a contractor right?

Gone for a day and way to long to get caught up. I do remember one question I can answer. The zipper goes in the back.  Feeling a little crappy today. Maybe a slight touch of the flu. I'm waiting to hear back from the doctor about my foot. I may have to call her this afternoon.

Only 4 more sleeps to go until Cuba.

April's totals:
Bike:6h 17m  - 104.08 Mi
Run:4h 59m 44s  - 31.81 Mi
Swim:2h 46m  - 7221.26 Yd
Strength:1h 00m
Hockey:7h 45m
Kickboxing:2h 30m

March's totals:
Bike:6h 32m  - 84.2 Mi
Run:6h 18m 35s  - 33.48 Mi
Swim:6h 56m  - 15582.5 Yd
Strength:1h 30m
Hockey:7h 20m

Not a great month for me. Too many little nagging things. Shoulder feeling better so back to the pool soon. The last run took a lot out of me so I haven't done anything since Wednesday's hockey. I even missed my kickboxing on Wednesdday night.  I need to pick up my training and follow the program better. I have to short tri's in June. I think I will also pick up some 5 and 10K races in the summer. Times a wasting and I haven't been training properly.

I'm taking the under on Tracy's race.

Roni - There is talk of a pre-race BT meet-up over in the Washington forum.  No real details as of yet.

Getting ready to call into a fun 2-hr project planning meeting and then off to Spokompton for the weekend.

Good luck to the other racers this weekend!!

Tracy-- I am glad you decided to race! That is going to be a great experience!  I am going to play devil's advocate!  Have a time goal is good, but this is HUGE difference between olympic, and 1/2 Iron...  I know you are going to do GREAT, and I hope you reach those goals, but I am saying... DON'T FOCUS on time.  Just to the best you can.   Focus on your nutrition, pacing, and staying comfortable.  I am just afraid that you are going to be focused on maintaining 17mph on the bike, and paying for 9 miles into the run...

On another note... You can (and probably will) go through a couple highs, and a couple lows.... If you a feeling bad on the bike assess why it is your are feeling bad?  Leg's are tired (down shift... Higher cadence), Belly is upset (stop taking your nutrition - see if it doesn't settle down, but continue to take WATER and solid foods at aid stations), cramping (GET SOME SALT!!)

You have worked hard over that last year, and have come a long way since I have known you!  You have a lot of support here, and at home!  Enjoy the day and don't get discourage at all!  You are doing what a 10th of the population in this world can only dream of.  Take it all in!

Please feel free to shoot me an email/pm anything if you have questions!! I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU TOMORROW!!!

Ok Steve...Just 'cause its friday afternoon, I'm going to play devil's advocate. SO are you telling us that 90% of the world's population has done a 1/2 IM? I know, a smart a$$ in every group. I had to beat Rob to the punch though.

Good luck racers!  Would you promise to post at least a couple of words about your stellar performance over the weekend? Some of us are living vicariously through your experiences!

Steve, Tony, et al, can you stand another CT question?  What is calibration? and why am I doing it?  The little machine says it is at 2:00, but for an upcoming TT for my new coach, he said ideally it should be between 2.5-3.0.  What the heck?

I could use every last one of you thinking good thoughts about my swimming progress this weekend (hell, how about all year?).  I am taking a big step backwards to fix the ongoing flaws identified in my underwater video. Basically, my workouts are 80% drills and 20% translation into actual swimming.  First flaw I am working on is FQS, my extended arm tends to drop too soon which puts me off balance.  I can do the catch up using B2, but flail around using B3 and translating it into the actual stroke is awful.  What kind of things did you think about when taking a drill to actual swimming?or did it just come naturally?

ugh, high of 59 and rain predicted in NJ this weekend for my TT, should be fun...

As for salt, dunno, I sweat a lot, hat is white after sweat dries from the salt, but I don't take any salt or anything like that.

When he says "get some salt" doesnt he just mean potassium, ie. sports drink, gels, bananas that kind of thing?

They make salt tablets and similar items for replenishing salt.  From what I have read there are conflicting reports if this is really necessary or just marketing.

Uh, no! Salt means sodium!  You can buy capsules like S!Caps or Endurolytes and they contain sodium, potassium and maybe magnesium. If you are white on your clothes or face post race you are blowing out sodium at a higher rate and it should be replaced through sports drink for sure and potentially these other products, especially if you are noticing cramping.  I take a precautionary S!Cap every hour, including one before the race, but I am pretty crusty by the end of a long day regardless of how warm it is.

My new avatar shows me walking out of the lake, I was just so happy to be done, I had absolutely no sense of urgency...I don't know why not since I was in 174/175th place at that point...LOL.  easy to say now...not so much on that day

Thanks for the salt info!  Please keep it coming. I'm 8 weeks out to my first HIM so I guess I should be thinking about this.

GREAT start to the month.  1000 TT in the pool.  18:15.  thats fast for a fat slob like me.  Btw... I didn't chime in on the HIM program question because I don't know anything other than what the BT Beginner HIM tells me.Sealed

I was filling a new Houston BT'er (KariKadi) in on some local info and it turns out she lives around the corner from me.  She has her first tri coming up next week (Mother's Day reminder people!) and wants to go for a ride. I have OWS practice sunday morning so tomorrow is all I have.  Since I havent paid for the race yet are you guys gonna get all over me if I ride w/ her instead of racing the 5k?

I am a big fan of Thermolytes... Anytime I am in the heat I take about 2 every 30-45 minutes (and I am not a big sweater!).....  Good question though.  Replacing your sale is very very important!

Kim 174/175 isn't so bad. You did finish right and did what other people only either watch on TV or just dreeam about doing.

Suzy: aren't you "crusty" at the best of times?

John: Do both. Tink of how impressed she will be when you tell her you did a run before you bike ride A half hour run should be just a warm up now for you.

I am a big sweater (I start to sweat just thinking about changing into my running gear) and replenish a lot with sports drinks and GU for energy. I haven't used any "salt pills" yet but was thinking of trying them this year especially with going longer distances. My races to date have basicallly been no more than 2 hours. The Olympic should run me about 3 hours I am guessing and of course the HIM much longer.

Finally got the ok to get back on the bike.  Had a small window because of life stuff so I was rushing.  Started at a friends house about 15 minutes from my house.  Took the road bike which I hadn't been on in a while.  First pedal away from his house and POW, tire split.  I had a tube but not a tire.  No time to get the tri bike, he has an extra mountain bike, and this is where the story begins!

I have never rode a mountain bike off road before.  We rode a difficult trail with a lot of climbing on narrow rocky trails.  I came to this realization the 4th time I fell over:  Clipless pedals on a mountain bike are HARD!!! My shifting, balance and overall proficiency just was not there. I got a great workout on the climbing and my buddy got a great abdominal workout laughing at me falling over.  I am beginning to wonder if this friend really likes me after picking that trail.

Knee felt great - great news.  It's amazing, I can't run in the yard with the kids without pain but I can hammer the bike like nothing ever happened.

Just excited to be sweating again.  Sounds like everyone else is putting in the miles - great job out there.
