Extreme Veteran 981 Maryland | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread DB - 2010-08-31 9:00 AM Any experienced Imoo'ers out there willing to give some advice on swim start location? Does it even matter? I'm looking at around 1 hr 20 min swim. I'm interested in this as well. I've been pretty surprised in the last two IMs I've done (not IMWI) with how sparse it is near the start line of the swim. I think the word is getting around that to avoid the crowd you can just hang back and wait a few seconds. At IMLP last year it seemed like a high percentage of swimmers were still on the shore when the cannon went off! I was able to get about 10 feet off the line and I was not there early at all. I think I am going to treat this like any other tri and just get right where I want unless someone has some advice on this race. |

Extreme Veteran 552 Minnetonka Beach, MN | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread FredsRider - 2010-08-31 8:01 AM I have a question about the athlete tracker. If you wore it on the swim, where did you put it at? I think you are asking about the GPS device (rental?)... I didn't wear it on the swim and I don't think it is waterproof. I just had it in my T1 bag and had it turned on and ready to go. (dropped it in there the morning of the race when we had access to the bags) |

It doesn't have a clip on, but they do provide you with a racebelt with a pocket for it. I chose to just drop it in my side pocket on the bike. I don't think it is waterproof? |

I just had it in my T1 bag and had it turned on and ready to go. (dropped it in there the morning of the race when we had access to the bags) I'm not going to wear it for the swim. I will keep it in T1 or my Bento box and stick it in my back pocket. I would not know how to wear it with a wetsuit for the swim and not have it be uncomfortable. Plus it's the bike and run where my family will be lost without it. Hopefully they will see me come out of the water! |

Extreme Veteran 572 | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Never worn it on the swim because I am too nervous about breaking or ruining it. However, my guess is that if you were going to do it you would be best to put it under your swim cap like a garmin. Although it may look a little goofy. To the best of my understanding the device works with "phone technology". In other words you need a cell phone signal in order for it to transmit your current data to your spectators. So my guess is keeping it above water would be your best bet. My family watches me go out for the swim and then stands at the exit of T1 so they are sure not to miss me. The exit from the swim is kinda hectic anyways. So I just put my tracker on in T1 and wear it from that point on. |

I have done this with the garmin after reading peoples' advice and yes it looks awful and I will never do it again. :-) |

Expert 2355 Madison, Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread REMINDER!!!! The day of the gear bag and bike check in is the day of the first badger home game which will bring in 80K + people to the downtown area. Not sure what time the game is but usually its an 11am start time and will affect the west side of downtown so keep this in the back of your head. If you plan on biking the run course do it on Friday because Saturday morning around 8am a lot of the run course surrounding the stadium will be mobbed with drunken students and their parents. So if you want to avoid this I would stay as close to the Terrace as possible as this should be far away enough from the game. If you don't mind the crowds though and can handle the atmosphere its a great place to be for some fun. Just my two cents and trying to help those avoid any added stress. If your lucky you may meet one of this true great drunken friends Sunday morning stumbling home if your in the right spot. A couple years ago my buddy talked to one of the competitors for a good 10 minutes on his way to SN drop off, the guy was a good sport and argued the games bad calls from the day before with a good sense of humor...haha |

Regular 72 Central MN | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Thanks for the reminder, Kona, I had no idea that there was a game on Saturday. Was planning to ride the run course on Saturday, but that will certainly change to Friday. And I thought endurance training was tough enough -- nevermind training while dealing with cancer treatment! Mick, your story proves that determination and a positive attitude can overcome such tremendous obstacles. You're inspirational - and thanks for sharing your story. |
