A little bit off topic here. But to those driving from NYC/NJ area, I would suggest avoiding I-95 if you can. Traffic is brutal there, especially if you are leaving Friday during the day. It becomes a parking lot on the Cross Bronx Expressway and the part up in Connecticut near New Haven is just the same.

On the topic of directions and best routes;

I am leaving from South Jersey near Philly and looking for the best way up to NH?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Probably going to leave about 2 AM on Thursday night to avoid any traffic on the way up.  What do you think?

Good question. The Parkway up over the Tappan Z then 84 should take you around all the 95 traffic in NY and Conn right?

What time do the Ellacoya parking lots fill up on Sunday morning. I'm heading over to be there when the gates open at 4AM.

Subject: Arrgh...L5 Bulging Disk
It's been a very rough 10 days since I rode the bike course.  Damn L5 didn't like the 3.5 hrs on the bike and it's been difficult to walk, let alone train.  Yesterday, I got back in the water - swam the mile at Walden Pond and felt great.  Seems to be about 90% better.  Decided to bring my bike in yesterday to have my LBS raise the aero bars to put a little less "C" curve in my back.  I figure comfort trumps aero at this point.

Any thoughts on what training I should attempt at this point?  I'm thinking of trying a short brick tomorrow 20 mile bike, 3 mile run to see how it holds up, but part of me is thinking just rest.  Any experience would be greatly appreciated!

I won't be up there until Saturday so unfortunately, I won't get to meet any of you Friday night.  My family and I have rented a house in Meredith for the week so after Timberman, it's all relaxation and recovery!

One last question - my wife is asking what is the best way to have family watch this?  We have 3 kids 8, 5, and 3 so she'll have her hands full.  She will be sound asleep when I leave so she's wondering when she should go and where to watch from with the kids?

RAD70 - I'm not nearly the experienced triathlete that most are here, but my advice would be that at this point any training you do is merely to reinforce what you've done so many times already. Rest would seem to be paramount to training this late in the game, especially with an injury in play. Just my 2 cents.

I've never gone that way.  Is that the best way around that section of the trip up?  If so I'm in.  Anyone ever go this route?

I'm pretty sure my buddy took that way (we definitely took the Tappan Z bridge) when we went to Attitash (near Mount Washington).

We did the 95 deal once and just sat in bumper to bumper traffic in Connecticut.

But if you are leaving at 2AM then you'll probably miss the traffic on I-95 and save yourself close to 30 minutes.

if you are braving the tappanZ east, go north on 684 to 84 east to mass pike to 495 (or cut off earlier through worcester) then then after 495 cut up route 3 (everret turnpike) to 93 north.

DONT take the merrit through CT....its a parking lot from Greenwich to Trumbul.

These are the directions that I am looking at right now.  May I ask what "braving the tanppanZ" means?

I was just looking at going the 684N to 84E and then hitting mass pike to 495.  Honestly I am going off hours in the middle of the nightto miss as much of the traffic as possible.  I want to be in the car as little as possible.  I hate driving.

That map was very close to what I was looking at.  The only thing you had on there was the slight change to jump on 3 up to 293 up to 93 and so on.   I like that one better.  I am thinking about getting a GPS for this trip.  Not that I am bad with directions at all I just don't feel like trying to figure it out on the fly.

Still care to elloborate on the braving the TappenZ comment?  Just curious.

Tappan Z is a HUGE bridge is the only thing I could make out from the comment (and from experience).

I think it spans one of the widest parts of the Hudson River.

the Tap is often clogged w traffic, and it always seems to be under construction (or construction nearby).

I'm not sure one has to leave at 2am, though, to beat the rush, buy hey if it works for you.

I am from NJ and will probab take the route described above.  I95 thru CT is always a b*tch.  It's either traffic, construction, accidents or police activity (or some combination of these.)

I hope everyone is enjoying taper week.  I am.  Except for the fact I am perpetually ravenous...i'm almost worried about gaining weight between now and the 22nd.

clogged is sometimes an understatement ...usually its worse going west because everyone is heading upstate for the weekend. You are going east, so that is "better"

but if you are leaving @ 2AM, you should be fine

Thanks Ben.  I think I'm going to taper as usual and just see how I feel.  If you are Rach are up for a ride on Saturday, let me know.  Of if you are going to be at Walden, maybe we can meet up?

As far as why I am leaving early AM, I just want to do two things.  1. Beat the rush and 2. enjoy Friday at the place I am staying and up in Gilford.  I hate to lose a whole day just for driving and god for bid I get stuck in a mess with traffic.  I'd like to spend as little as time as possible in the car while heading up there.

Man I am about just over a week into my taper and I feel like a$$.  I know from my swimming days that this can be a usual symptom but I think the training is finally all catching up with me plus the insane heat we have been having has taken it's toll.  I've been off from work all week and all I have been doing is sitting around a pool, getting my workouts in and sleeping.

RAD70 - You hit it on the nose. "Comfort trumps aero." Unless you're going for the win, you'll be faster being comfortable. It's a balance between the two.

I must have been cursed the other night. I rode with a friend from work and he told me of some tire-changing tips he had picked up at the bike shop. I rode this morning. Something told me not to venture out too far from the house since I have to take my daughter to soccer this morning. You guessed it...I got my flat. But, the good news is, I changed that sucker in about 5 minutes.

after reading thru the posts about traffic, I'm wondering about my plan. I was going to leave mid-morning on Friday from NJ. Sounds like that's not such a great plan.

I think folks might want to start thinking about that this may be a wetsuit illegal race. Even after several relatively cool days, water temperature at 8 AM is 80 degrees at the 2 foot depth.

http://www.blackcatnh.com/

There are 4 days of possible rain in the next 10 days, so that might help a little, but even on the rainy days, highs are expected in the 80's, so it doesn't seem like there will be that much relief. More importantly, lows are only expected in the high 60's so it's like there's a ton of droppage at night for it to cool down.

I'm seeing different numbers:
http://www.winnipesaukee.com/tempcal/index.cgi

And given that August nights around the lake are generally in the 40's and 50's I'd suspect it to continue to hover in the same area or drop (water temp got as high as 78 degrees in July and has since fallen 3 degrees).

In the end, to me, it comes down to this: Timberman is a wetsuit-legal swim every year, WTC will get a sub-80 reading somehow.  I felt like I was overheating last year in the wetsuit and it was still wetsuit legal, I swam at Ellacoya last weekend and it was more comfortable than I remembered it from last year.

I'm really not worried about the wetsuit issue.  I believe it's even mentioned in the race packet that they're expecting it to be wetsuit legal.

I will/have been preparing for the possibility of a non-wetsuit swim, but...

I'm imagining a cool morning...65 degrees with the sun gently rising across the lake which is releasing a little steam because it is holding a temperature of 76 degrees.
I'm getting on the bike with blue, cloudless skies overhead and dark sunglasses being needed as I head out on the bike.
On the way to T1 I'll be debating on whether or not I should wear my glasses or simply stick with my visor. The run may be a little hot, but not too bad as it hovers around 80-82 degrees.

This is the day I'm looking for.  See it with me...if you're with me on this.

I'll actually check the 10-day forecast now because Sunday should now be involved in that.

Peace.
