Expert 885 | Subject: RE: Disturbed275's Mentor Group - CLOSED! No racing for me either. I'm just hoping the rain stays away enough for me to get my workouts done outside. Won't be fun if I have to move them to the trainer/treadmill. Will try to relax some, too. Have a great weekend everyone. |

RW has a 10 week one in this months issue that looks okay but I would like a slightly longer build to get my run volume up prior to the start of the plan and possibly a 15 week build. Any suggestions from the group? |

Veteran 222 Fresno, CA | Subject: RE: Disturbed275's Mentor Group - CLOSED! scotty930 - 2010-07-01 5:40 AM So what'severyone planning for the 4th of July weekend? Anybody doing any interesting races? Anybody going away for the weekend? I am just relaxing at home personally. I will do the local 5k Stars n' Stripes run on the 4th and hae to work after that from 12-7. So nothing to interesting from me! Been incognito for what seems like days. Business travel...again. So what else is new? I did manage to squeeze in a nice hill run in the city I was staying in and a quick swim in the hotel pool. I'm thinking the pool was maybe all of 25 feet long rather than yards. Little hard to get a rhythm going when you keep bumping into the wall. Anywho... I'm in need of major decompression. We plan to lay low the entire weekend. If I can get my act together and go to the grocery store, we may even bar-b-que on the 4th. It's supposed to be 100 degrees tomorrow, which kind of takes the fun out of bar-b-queing, but we'll see. Long run on tap shortly. Have a great holiday everyone! And congrats Jack on the IM. |

Judi, Here are a few different plans: http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/inter.htm http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-244--9369-1-1X2X3X4X5X6X7-8,00.html http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_4/134.shtml http://www.marathonrookie.com/half-marathon-training.html Some have you running more and some less. You can always repeat some of the early weeks to add time to the 10 and 12 weeks plans. I am using a Higdon plan with some adjustments to the long run distance for marathon training. I will probably use the FIRST program for my next marathon (less running and more speedwork). Many of my runner friends use Higdon plans (intermediate and advanced plans). The adjustments to my training plan involve alternating up and down mileage for the long run. For example: 7 this week, 8 next week, 7 again, and then 10. I hope all of this helps! |

Thanks for the links, Laurie! I printed off a couple of the plans to compare. The marathon rookie one looks like the plan I used last fall. I think that one was actually just the first half of the marathon training team plan with a couple of tweaks. It didn't break out tempo and speed work days which was what I had in the plan I used for February. I still have that one printed out, but wanted a slightly longer build than 9 weeks. Guess I just need to build more run time (ick in this heat it will be treadmill running or geting up even earlier than 5 AM to run before the heat.) KenJ is helping me hunt a workable plan too, he wants me to get my sub 2 hr goal. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: Disturbed275's Mentor Group - CLOSED! Hi all, Been sick since last Wednesday with sinus and ear infection. So I have a half aquabike (swim and bike only) this weekend. Ride is flat with rollers. I just got back on the bike last night for a easy 1 hour ride just to get my legs moving again. Thoughts on what I should do or not do tonight and tomorrow? I was thinking a 1/2 to 1 mile swim tonight followed by another easy spin on the bike, then another easy spin on the bike tomorrow? Also since I only have the swim and bike, what would you guys recommend for nutrition? The long rides I have done have had rest stops. I was thinking chomps on the bike. Should I take an energy or protein bar once an hour or 2 hours? Any thoughts would help. Not the best prepared, but I figures since there is no run, I can get away with alot. |

I've never done an aquabike, so I'm not sure how helpful my advice will be... but here are some of my thoughts.... How important is the race to you? Are you racing it to race it, or are you just using it as training practice for a later race? If you're hoping to race it and do well, I wouldn't suggest trying anything you hadn't done in training. I generally take the few days before a big race completely off, but if you've found swims & easy spinning help keep you sharp, then go ahead and do that. Have you used energy/protein bars during your long rides before? If you haven't, I wouldn't risk it. For my half next weekend, I'm planning on using a bottle of Heed (2 scoops) an hour + an Accel Gel every 90-ish min on the bike, and Accel Gel every 45-60min on the run... But that's what I've been training with on all my long bike rides and long runs, so I know that combination should work fine (of course, I've never done an HIM before so I have yet to see how it plays out!) If you're just doing this race as practice for a later race, then this is actually the perfect time to experiment with nutrition and see what works! |

I've only done 2 half marathons before, and I didn't really follow a training plan for either (I managed off of my Oly base last year by throwing in a couple of 8-10 mile long runs once a month). FWIW, like Laurie, I'm using the FIRST plan for my marathon as well (I also used it for my last marathon too). I really like it since it only involves 3 days of running, so I can use the other days for biking, swimming, etc. |

Hope you are feeling better! Since you are still recovering from illness I would keep today's workout pretty easy and probably take tomorrow off completely to ensure you are well rested. As far as nutrition goes, even though you are not running you will want to make sure you get in enough calories after the swim so that you are not suffering during the latter half of the bike. Are the chomps/energy bars going to be your only source of nutrition? I would recommend taking in a sports drink for both calories and hydration and supplementing with your solid foods as well. During a HIM bike I will usually take in a couple packages of shot bloks (similar to chomps) along with 64 oz or so of gatorade endurance. |

Sunday I'm planning on a long ride and maybe a yoga class. My mom and I went to a Masala Bhangra class in New York last weekend (it's a fusion of traditional Indian dancing w/Bollywood) and my mom loved it so much, she wants me to go to another class with her this weekend. So I might be doing that as well. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: Disturbed275's Mentor Group - CLOSED! Nice new pick Neal So I did my half aquabike today. Some good and a little disappointing, but not so much. I finished which I am so proud of!!! Never did that distance before - longest bike this year was 51 miles over a month ago. The swim certainly looks more intimidating when you can see the full 1.2 miles (did it in about 46 minutes). I felt good. Decided not to wear a wetsuit, so I think that is what blew my goal of under 45 minutes. Thats ok though. The bike was flat at fast, but I still suffered. I managed at 17.9 mph average, so that is good, but it just seemed that the whole ride was, I feel great (go gangbusters) to I feel a little sucky (slowed down a little). I managed 3 hr 7 minutes which is a little over the 3 hour goal I had. Who cares, I finished!!! I actually started cramping on the swim and was having problems with the cramps creeping the entire bike in the calves and quads. Can I just tell you that 56 miles just seemed to go on forever . . . how on earth do you people do 112??? Notes: Bottle exchange went great, didn't slow too much, just grabbed hard . .. never droppeed one. Volunteers were great. For nutrition, I used the powerbar ironman drink (got a free case) and ate a chomp block ever 10 minutes. Oh yeh, some guys crashed in the beginning of my bike and was taken away by ambulance. Hope he wasn't hurt too bad. Hope everyone else is having a good weekend |

Champion 10742 Ames, IA | Subject: RE: Disturbed275's Mentor Group - CLOSED! I had a fun weekend of training and racing. Saturday morning I put in 102 miles on the bike. This went much better than my last century ride. I rested for a few hours (ie napping and watching the tour) and then ran a 10k at 8:30 that night. My legs gave out the last couple of miles but I still managed a respectable 42 minutes. Post race pasta was excellent. I slept a few more hours and then woke up for a sprint tri this morning. I had a surprisingly good race. It was rainy and transition and the run course was a muddy mess, but that didn't slow me down too much. Finished in 1:03:29 which was good enough for 8th overall and 1st in my age group (well, second but the guy who beat me placed in the overall so I'm counting this as an age group win). Race reports to follow. I hope everyone had a great weekend! |

I'm doing a full aqua bike in September in prep for IMFL. Never done an aqua bike either. How does is work at the end? I will probably do a short brick run after I finish, but am not sure how the ending works since I'm technically done after the bike. Any insight would be great. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: Disturbed275's Mentor Group - CLOSED! I would check with the race people or send an email, but usually aquabike ends in transition right after the bike. There is usually not a finish line. Ask though because I have passed up my finish last year not knowing and lost time and a place. Because most that do the aquabike bike do it because they cannot run (knee, back problems, etc) it is hard for race directors to mandate that aquabike people run to a finish. |
