wmcgee62 - 2010-04-29 9:35 PM When I got home from work I biked for 9 miles before going swimming for an hour and 40 minutes last night. I was burnt out when I got home. Tonight I am wired.

Wow. I think I should bow down and worship you! 9 miles and then an hour and 40 minute swim? Nice! You go!!!

I haven't ever done a race with an OWS. I love to swim, but I don't like being in OW. My goal is to do one this year with an OWS. We'll see if I chicken out again.

The woman who coaches our running group said that the OWS is what totally freaked her out in her first tri and why she no longer does them - I'm saying that not to freak you out too, lol, but bc she said that she'd never done an OWS until her first tri, and wished she'd practiced. That sure seems like good advice to me. I've never minded OW recreationally myself, but am going to be able to do a couple of OWS practices (tho not in the race venue), and then an OWS clinic & a race before my first tri, so that I'm as prepared as I know how to be. I found my OWS clinic/race on the USMS website - perhaps they'll have something in your area, too, to help you prep?

Oh, I do an open water swim clinic with my tri club every spring. And I own a wetsuit, so last summer after the county built a small pond for recreational use of the secondary water they are using to water peoples lawns, I went once a week with a couple friends. Even after 2 months of that, I was still panicking every time i swam in OW. Doesn't help that the water is always cold and the visibility is poor--you can barely see your hand when you're swimming--and the lake/pond is surrounded by 3-plus foot boulders, which look pretty dang creepy when they pop out of nowhere when you haven't sighted for a while, LOL. Oh, and s 22 year old from my church drowned there, just 15 feet away from his cousins. It took the divers hours to find his body, due to the visibility issues. Blech.

*sigh* I'll get there. I might have to drive an hour or so up to the mountains once a week this summer to swim in clearer water.

If there's one thing I know, it's that I can't give up now. I just can't.

Good morning everyone!

To those of you who said you were too wired to sleep after working out I have a tip.

You have trouble falling asleep because your HR is still high. I have found for myself that a glass or two of red wine and/or a warm bath have helped me wind down faster.

givemashot - 2010-04-29 12:14 PM I am on the committee of a new marathon/half marathon/5k being held here in September, and I could use some input. What makes a race/event a good one? Aside from how you feel you performed athletically? What makes a race something you want to do again? Is it the medals? The flavor of gatorade at the aid station? What would make you NOT want to do that race again the next year, and do another event instead?

Freebies are good. A good t-shirt, and other goodies.

Atmosphere is important, too. At the RNR half there were bands every mile, and cheerleader groups. I think Pittsburgh will have them, too. 13.1 or 26.2 miles is a long way to go if the course is boring. So things along the way to liven the race course up are GOOD!

Post race food and activities, too. Music at the finish line. Good food, and plenty of it.

Define post-race activities and good food. (I already know that =no veggies for Ann)

Hmmm. Too bad we are in Utah. Land of the State-run liquor store. We're lucky we can still buy plain ol' 3.2% budweiser at the grocery store. Sure can't buy any bartles and james or boone's at the grocery store anymore. That makes this sweet-toothed drinker sad.

Here in PA you can't buy any alcohol at grocery stores.

Good morning to all.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't drink, oh I might (big might) drink a beer once a year for some occasion.  As far as Wednesday training. Its my mid week push. If you knew how bad  I swam it would not impress.  Coaches are commenting how much I have improved from only being able to doggy paddle one length. I am breathing and completing laps. Late Jan I joined a beginners indoor triathlon training program. It was sad I was by far the worse swimmer there. Cant prove it but believe they were taking bets on whether I finished the program.  I just kept at it. Bought a book and videos on the Total Immersion method, emulated other good swimmers. That got me thru the program.   I was at the the pool 3 to 5 times a week anywhere  30 minutes to an hour an half.  Remember I might have to swim part of it freestyle till I ran out of air, come up and doggy paddle the rest of the way. People would give me help here and there. Finally I got into a swim class. I did 8 weeks of class and seen how far I was ahead of others. The instructor help my form and we never go to the breathing part. So i would do ok till I ran out of air. I joined the second class and got a personal trainer session for a half hour after the class. I believe I have made great improvement with the personal one on one trainer. Being tired after the swim class and my instructor pushes me hard along with the additional things to do for the week is taking a lot of my focus.  I usually take Thursday off or just do lite exercising.   Anyway Have a great day everyone

That's a great story - don't discount it your amazing progress in just a few short months!  I can only hope that I can do the same thing with my running someday.

Have a great day everyone!

ditto (esp the great day part!). Progress will keep coming w/ your persistence & work ethic (not to mention good listening skills ). One of the women at our masters swims said that she literally didn't know how to swim when she started this 4 or 5 years ago, and is training now for a 2 mile swim in the gulf at the end of the month - not her first year doing it, either.

ironannekidd - 2010-04-28 9:15 AM Wes - Is it REALLY expensive to paint a motorcycle helmet?

When I got my new bike last year I was going to get my helmet painted the same color. I got a quote of $250 to get it painted. I can buy a new helmet for that.

I painted a set of Dura Ace wheels last year for a guy.  He wanted them to match his TIME RXR ULTeam.  $500
Helmets depending on graphics would be bt $200-500.
I mostly do Bikes $1k-3k
Cars $5k-15k(Painted several cars that have covered magazines)
But I just do it for side money to spend on my other obsessions.
One of my personal cars before.....

After

My son would be drooling on the laptop right now if I showed him this picture!

Very nice!

Just showed my son and he loved it!!!!!  You have a new fan who is 11 y/o - LOL

LOL.  Thanks
On more than one occasion, Ive returned to my car in a parking lot to have several preteens taking pics of it.  For some reason, adults are much harder to impress.........   Stigma of rough ride and bad mpg wins over a nice paint job i guess.

Excellent ideas! I like to hang out in the sauna a little bit after swimming, except on class night, the Y shuts down at 9 and this is not an option.  They flick the lights on and off in the pool area to let us know it's time to go home.  So last night I had a glass of chardonnay when I got home, which helped.  A wam bath would have been the icing on the cake.

Everyone gets to join the club sooner or later.

Do you have a trainer you could put your bike on to practice first? Or I've seen other people suggest a doorway.

Good luck!
