Hotel travel sucks...

Bike - 63.3mi
Run - 7mi

All the biking miles were on the trainer. The traveling has dampened the run.

I got talked into signing up for a Half Marathon in Dec, so it looks like the running is about to start ramping up!

Dang it.  Woke up this morning and my left foot was hurting.  So I ran 5 miles anyway.

Is anyone planning on buying some new tri toys this off season?

I just bought a new fuel belt.  I've also been watching every Cervelo S1, that's been put on Ebay.

Careful. With all that running you could get plantar fasciitis. Its just miserable.Only thing I really need are new cycling shoes. Haven't found a pair I like yet.

If everything works out w/ Jorge, I may have a new Powertap and wheel.  We will see.

I see a pair of running shoes in my future with all the running I'm planning on doing and maybe some swim lessons to work on form.

I'm not quoting any workout numbers, because there aren't really any.  Still not back from my calf injury.  This weekend is looking iffy.  I guess if there is a time to get injured this is the best time, anyway.  A week or two off isn't necessarily a bad thing.

BTW, did someone mention toys?   Yeah, I've been looking for toys.  I have to say I spent myself dry during the summer to get the Powertap (love it though).  I don't think I have bought anything new except for shoes and supplies - so my toy buying habit really depends on what I see on CL, ebay, forum classifieds, etc.  I just bought a new cassette (12-23 because I really missed a 16 tooth cog in my flat Oly last month) because it was cheap ($12 shipped).  It will do just fine for the amount of usage it will get.

Stuff on my list:
Carbon seatpost (specific to my bike - has two positions for road and tri, etc.)
Extra 310 mount so I can use the 310 on the back of my head in open water (yes, I'm a geek).
Running vest and headlamp (mostly for running the Bourbon Chase next year)
Deep Front rim (prolly a Real Design 90mm if I go new - this is an expensive purchase)
Keywin Pedals and cleats.

Lots of wishes, not so much cash.  Nothing unusual there.

Woohoo! on the PT.  What kind?

BTW, maybe one of these days if you want we can get together on the swimming.

I put in for the Pro+ HUb/ DTSwiss Rim / Joule 2.0  It came as a package.  Figured I can get a disc cover and LOOK fast if I improve enough before next year w/ the Winter Training Plan.

I need to get back in the pool soon.  I don't want to loose everything I gained over the summer.  I may take you up on the swimming, I just think something is missing on my form.

I already have a touch of PF.  Some Ultrasound and Graston will clear it right up.

Some other needs:
Tri Shoes, my Pearl Izumis have had it.
New running shoes, the NB 904s were awesome, the 905s not so much

Some other wants:
A road frameset
A cheap mountain bike

Craigslist.  MTBs are all over and you are the right size to have your pick.  I picked up my Rockhopper on CL last year for $300.

That sounds great on the PT.  Looks like a good package.  The disc cover is definitely the way to go, as well.

As far as something missing in your form - swimming is just about all form.I would hazard to say that until you get under 1:40/100 or so it is 100% form.

My knee has been acting up a little but which has me a bit freaked out.  I really don't want to start that rinse, lather, repeat cycle of getting in shape, hurting my knee, getting fat, repeat.  Luckily one of my neighbors is a PT.  He gave me some basic exercises to work on and is going to help me figure out a plan. He's an avid cyclist so he understands that I don't want to sit around on the coach.  He actually told me that if I keep the intensity down I can probably keep my volume up reasonably well.  The downside is I was looking forward to Jorge's cycling plan and a found a plan on RW to improve 10k speed that I was looking at.  I guess those are off the table for now.  Looking on the bright side I wanted to spend a lot of time  in the pool this winter and wanted to get back to doing some strength/core training so I guess it's not all that bad.

As for toys I want to get a transition bag for next year, some yaktrax (something you guys probably don't need to worry about) before the weather gets crappy and a mat for my trainer.  We're going to finish the basement over the winter and I have a feeling my wife isn't going to like my sweating all over the new carpet!  Oh, and and HTC-Columbia bike jersey.  If I can get my knee taken care of, drop these last 15 pounds and do Jorge's program you guys are going to have to start calling me Cavendish!

Do you already have your team picked out? Not to jump your bandwagon, but if not, looking for members? It was on my list for this year, but the PE Exam sorta ruined that for me. And after being here in KY and being on part of the trail, I'm itching for it next year.... As long as it fits in w/ HIM training for Augusta....

Agreed. I haven't been in the water since Labor Day's Callaway gardens Oly and I'm afraid I've forgotten how to swim

I tried the hotel pool, but you know, it takes 8 laps here to make 50yrds and at that rate, I'd be sick before 200...just not worth it.

Toys.... let see....

Shoes. I just bought 1 pair of beasts and am about to buy another. The new ones that just hit the shelves have the new DNA footbed that I really want to try. If I like them, I'm going to buy them and just keep switching hoping they last a while. I really hate it, but the beasts are out-frickin-rageous!

I'm hoping I can stretch them from now until Feb and get my half marathons out of the way on them...

I'm on a hiatus (from the wife) on spending money. I just bought a new DSLR camera and two lenses, so that cut into my tri money.

By next year though, I do want a new helmet (one with more vents), another pair of tri shorts, and then nutrition. I think my biggest expense will be race fees (HIM, Bourbon Chase, 5k swim).

Speaking of...anyone start their schedule for next year yet?

Ok...i'm going to start something new. I need someone to talk realistically to me.

I have Vulcan 10k Nov 7. I've raced it 3yrs running now and each year I've gotten faster and felt better. This year, I'm hoping for no different.

2007 - 1:12:xx
2008 - 1:08:xx
2009 - 1:00:59
2010 - 54:xx ? (maybe)

What do you think? I've been doing some middle distance runs (5-7mi) lately, a few longer ones (not many). Some of the middle distance runs have some tempo sets (2x2mi @ <8:30 or 2x1.5mi all out) or are straight up descending runs. Tonights: 7.1 @ 1:05 w/ the first mile being WU @ 9:40/mi.

Am I crazy to think I can hit that? Or beat it? I don't know, tonight on the track, I just didn't feel like I had the gears left for more speed.

Right after this 10k, I have to stay in the groove for a Half Marathon in Dec and I would really really like sub 2hrs, but I'm thinking that's a shot in the dark too (1 and only HM was 2:10 Feb this year).

Thoughts? Advice?

I think it's a reasonable goal. I really like using Daniels' VDOT tables and McMillan's running calculator to predict times and set goal.  They both predict 54 minute ball park times for a 10k based on your 5k time from earlier in the year.  That doesn't mean you can just show up and do it but it does seem like a reasonable goal.

To provide a counterpoint to this.  I did the 5k (Lostsheep threw up something about a wife maybe going into labor or some other weak excuse as a reason for not going ;-) ) and never did more than 4000 total in any one session, to my memory.  And even then I never did more than 2.5k straight.  I wanted to poke my eyes out during that 2.5k.  I call BS on the need to do 5000 straight.  If asked to do that I'd probably do something like 3x1000 and tag on 4x500 or something similar.

On the other hand the race itself was spectacular.  Sooo much fun!  I highly recommend it.
