Stacie...thanks...and thanks!

Gobey...yes, I was at Timberman. Strangely, what I recognized was the little wooden posts on the hill leading down to the lake.

It was a good day, even with the rain.

My two cents on driving any distance after IM.
After my first IM, my family escorted me to our van. I walked within my own power and all, but in the van on the way back to our hotel (about :35 min. away), I asked my wife, "Do you remember CPR?"
I seriously could not dial in how I was feeling. It was like nothing else and I wasn't sure if I was going to puke, pass-out, or die.

However...after my second IM I felt fine except for my stomach. At first I thought I was hungry, but I took one bite of ice cream...or something and I didn't want to eat anything else. I would have been a fine passenger for an hour, but not a good driver.

I think it's different for everyone. How's that for wisdom?

Peace.

Good stuff, Sam.  I'm just gonna give it some more thought.  Maybe I will stay with friends that live in Louisville.  Just trying to save a bit of cash.

NashinAK - 2011-02-10 12:24 PM thanks, AmyLeigh

Now another question--I've never done a race near this long.  I'm curious as to those that have done an Ironman if it would be a bad choice for me to ride (not drive) back to my parents an hour or so away from Louisville after the race, or if i should plan on staying the night in the hotel in Louisville.  Just curious as to your thouhts on how legs will do in a car as opposed to sitting in a restaraunt/hotel.

I want to get our accomodations taken care of sooner rather than later.

When my brother did Lou in 2009 he was a passenger riding back home in a car (just an hour drive) but he said it was one of the most miserable hours of his life.  Hey and I was just a volunteer and spectator and was very happy I stayed and didn't go home! lol  So last year he made sure he stayed after he finished and of course I did too!

It was a great day, little crowded but I thought it was a great race.  Man I got caught in the heavy rain just as I got back to the hills.  Little sporty screaming down some of those hills with slick pavement

gobey007 - 2011-02-09 4:32 PM Just booked my reservation with tribike transport, that todo list never ends with this sport.

So on the 28th I'm going to start Gale Bernhardt's 26 week IM plan.  Anyone else in on this or does anyone have any experince with this plan?

I'm using this plan. It came highly recommended by someone who used it to train for Louisville in the past. My plan is slightly modified from the one in the book (longer long bikes and longer runs).

I'm going to modify mine as well.  A little morphing with what I like about that free plan from Matt Fitzgerald.

I have Gale's unmodified plan in a spread sheet if you want it.  It was a pain but easier to modify, print, and put in a starting date for each week.  I can't stand reading it out of that book

In re: staying the night or driving an hour.- I stayed at the Gault last year which is a couple of blocks away from the finish line and thank God! it was not much farther away because I don't think my legs /body would have been able to take it. Having the hotel nearby was also convenient after the race to get there and take a quick shower and then head back to 4th Street live to eat and watch the rest of the finishers. You really want to be there watching and enjoying the moment until the race is officially over.Thomas

Thanks

I looked at your blog.  Nice pic w/ the dog.  I'm a little south of you, but I feel your pain.  We're not used to this weather, and I hate the treadmill.  Good for you - I think a 15 mile run on it would kill me.
What's your goal in Cowtown - finish or PR?   If just finish - you won't have any issues.  If you're going for PR, I'd say the decreased training isn't as much a deal physicially as it is mentally.  You're close enough to taper that the extra rest may be an advantage.  Try not to psych yourself out.  You'll do great!

I appreciate the support.  I'm looking to PR the marathon, but not with an amazing time.  I'm shooting for 3:30.  I have my final LD run this Saturday (was going to do last weekend, but weather made it a no go).  Once I get that under my belt, I'll feel a lot better.  The idea behind this marathon was to keep me in shape over winter and improve my run.  We'll see how it turns out.

Hi all. I just found this thread. Just never got over to this part of the forum for some reason. I registered a while back and have been training for IMKY. I am also considering doing a half IM in Effington IL in the June time frame.

I am 38, married, 2 kids. Pretty strong swimmer, probably a bit above av on bike and an absolute miserable runner. I am following the Dan Fink 30 week intermediate plan.

This will be my first full, I did the Cardinal Harbor half last summer. And please forgive me as I just skimmed this thread, did not read the whole 43 pages.

Welcome Travis!
Seriously...you joined this forum and you haven't read all 44 pages? I'm going to have to question your committment to this.
Kidding of course. Good to have another 40-something on board.
Peace.

Its nagging, and I just have to know, will I be the only one racing IMLOU without race wheels? I had to scrape just to be able to buy my entry level tri bike, along with all the other gear, and just won't be able to buy race wheels. I don't want to feel "inferior".

Jillian--Unless I can borrow or rent wheels on the cheap, I won't be using them either.  Very expensive hobby we find ourselves in.

Hey Tri Sam--since when did 38 become 40 something?  By my math, Travis and I have two years before we call ourselves that.  Ha!

Welcome. Travis.

Probably half the bikes didn't have race wheels last year.

Jillian- I'll be will be using what I consider to be a nice set of wheels, but by industry standards, they are not "race wheels".

Nathan- That's funny. When I looked at this last night in my tired...aged...stupor, I read something completely different than what was on Travis's post. I read it again this morning to see what you were talking about and sure enough "38".

Apparently, shortly after you turn 40, you look for those numbers and they appear the way you think they are rather than what they actually are. No...please, by all means, enjoy your two years of "before 40".

Peace.

No race wheels for me either. I considered renting wheel from race day wheels, i think I'll just save the money for something else. Last fall I bought my Felt B14 and my wife thought that spending $1700 + on a bike was crazy. I can just see the look on her face when I say I need to spend another $1000 so that my bike will go a tad bit faster.

Right now I'm staring at the basement door. Down there my bike and trainer are beckoning me for the 90 minute ride scheduled for today. I just don't want to do it. I'm really starting to wish I lived in a warmer climate and could actually ride outside year round.

x3.  I'm teaching my wheels good self affirmation techniques so they feel just as good as race wheels when the day comes

gobey..."self-affirmation"...love it. Laughed...then considered doing the same for my wheels. Perhaps a booklet or pamplet on such things needs to be published.

As I get stuck in to my training plan, the race is 6 months away and I am already having nightmares. Last night I had a dream that I was late for the race, had no nutrition and had to stop at the gas staion to buy a box of Fig Newtons which I duck taped to my bike.

LOL ~ that is a good one!!  My recurring dream always has me forgetting to take off my wetsuit in T1 and not realizing it until I'm already out on the bike course.....lol, could you imagine!?!

Good stuff!  It's the craziness that I love & what connects us all
