Training has gone well this week, more swimming than previously... just have to white knuckle it a bit ![]() Had this week (and back in beginning of December) a few very trying cases at work so stressed.. tri training helps me feel tough, though, like "I can take it"... wonder if others here find it helping them at work, etc. My husband read recently in a book about fathers bringing up daughters that someone once said that there are two types of women, "princesses and pioneer women" and how we should be trying to raise "pioneer women" obviously.. he says "Hmmm, I wonder what type you are, honey?" Anyway, I know this is generalizing and labeling too much, but interesting, huh. Have a great weekend, kate |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TankBoy - 2011-01-21 4:14 PM Hi everybody - I hope everyone that is not sick and/or snowed in is having a good training day. While I am not sure that it qualifies as a breakthrough per se, I did have a good swim - 3500 yards that included set of 5x 100/50/25 all-out sprints at the end. 3 months ago I was clocking 100s in the 1:18~1:20 range. This morning I hit my first 100 in 1:15 and then totally surprised myself with a 1:11 on the second set. Of course I totally blew a gasket on that one and went 1:21, 1:19, 1:19 for the next 3. I know a 1:11 is nothing for the fasties in the group, that is is most likely the quickest 100 I have ever swam. So an old dog can learn new tricks. That, or my watch is simply broken. Followed up with 1 hour of DT sports massage. So a good day. In addition to the swim, I had on today's schedule a 10k step-up run, but my coach called last night and said I could nix it if I ran a 5k race tomorrow (Saturday). As I would crawl across burning coals and broken glass to get out of a step-up run, I took him up on it, which kinda blows today's massage. So for Saturday I have that followed by a 1 hour recovery spin. On Sunday my workout schedule only lists "Wife Time. I am very excited about that! How is everyone else's weekend shaping up? That is a great time. I'm still in the 1:30's for 100 at the absolute fastest. I need to learn flip turns though. |

Have a great weekend, kate While I do not train specifically to relieve stress, life stress’s pop up and are pretty much wipe away with my training. We raised 3 children to fine adults (22, 21 and 20). Our philosophy was love and discipline. We tried to mold them in their personalities. Although our influences were not too different from each child it worked for us. Our oldest daughter was very much the princesses, style, attitude and friendly personality. Are youngest was the pioneer girl, analytical, independent and explorer. Our son is very much the pioneer as well, explorer, independent and reserved. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Awesome work, guys! Kathy - great to see that hard work in the pool coming through. ![]() Today I went for a long run with a mate who's in training for the London marathon. Just met up at the park and ran laps for an hour or so then headed home. I'm really happy to say that I covered 8.25 miles in 1hr 11mins ..... not only the longest I've run for years but already a mile faster for the same time. ![]() Tonight is roast dinner at a friends' so a few glasses of wine to relax with. Tomorrow I'm hoping to do a technique session in the pool and on the bike but gosh is it good to be able to train again vaguely properly ..... |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi All, It looks like everyone is keeping very busy with training and life, same thing going on here. The kids are 3 for 3 with head colds, so yesterday I missed my short recovery run and Friday became once again "rest day" for the legs. I did manage to get a lunch swim in, since I worked from home to keep an eye on the 2 boys who stayed home from school. I have 90-100 minutes on the bike planned for today, and the wife is pressing me to try a Yoga Sculpt class this afternoon, which will probably make em sore for a week! Tomorrow's plan is to run & swim in the morning after dropping my teenager at the airport for Yosemite Winter Camp. Just received my weekend chore assignments, off to clean the yard and do laundry! |

Right now I'm using my PT data on the Joule which is about 10-15 watts below CT watts. I should get my new speed sensor and then I can run both Quarq on Joule and PT on LYC to do more comparison then I need to sell my PT. |

The Quarq is reading about 5-10w higher than the CT is actually, which is sort of what I expected it to. Interesting thing: I bought the cadence sensor as you know my coach has a thing for cadence, but I didn't have to hook it up as the CT cadence sensor worked all by itself on the Garmin unit! Garmin 800 btw. Hope you had fun tonight! Quarq has cadence built into the crank and it is normally what gets picked up my ant+ head. Issue I had with Joule records based on speed so w/o speed sensor it will pick up data but not record it and eventually unit turns off...very similar to Garmin 500. |

Issue I had with Joule records based on speed so w/o speed sensor it will pick up data but not record it and eventually unit turns off...very similar to Garmin 500. Awesome - it is fun to get new toys! Same thing as Kathy - you sure you are not picking cadence from the Quarq? I am not 100%, but I think you should use that one instead anyway - as one of the coolest things about the quarq is that you can easily recalibrate it on the fly by simply spinning backwards four or five times. If I understand it right, the quarq automatically sends recalibration info to the head unit every time it senses cadence under zero power for x number of seconds. I have both the 500 and the 800, and do use the garmin speed/cadence sensor (so I don't ever have the unit shut down problem Kathy mentions - good to know though), but the head unit uses the quarq cadence because I simply removed the magnet from my crank. You read all the boards enough to know that a lot of folks drive themselves absolutely CRAZY over which power unit is the most "accurate." There is an old saying that goes something like "A man with one watch always knows exactly what time it is, while a man with two watches is never quite sure." I think PM's are the same - if for no other reason than they take the reading at different places in the system. If all PMs are reading wattage Accurately, it still seems they would give different readings, it would seem that the Quarq would be highest, Powertap in the middle, and Computrainer the lowest, simply due to power lost through the system (cranks/spider/BB/drivetrain/sprocket/hub/spokes/wheel/tire/road) - if this is true, the most useful number for understanding the whole system would be watts to the road (computrainer, if I understand correctly how it works). That way you could really tell if those fancy ceramic bearings and your high-carbon tire really make a difference), While currently the best system to measure purely your body's output in isolation from the system might be the Quarq, as it ignores all the downstream energy loss. The Polar/Look system that is supposed to be coming would isolate this even further upstream, and should even give you very accurate data relative to left/right imbalances. At any rate, as long as you use the same unit, or know how the #'s correlate between units, it seems all should be right with the world...? Note, all of the above is an admittedly uneducated guess at how the systems compare - I only have a quarq and have never used any other setup. The only reasons that I selected the quarq over any other are that I have a significant investment in wheels/fancy hubs, the ability to callibrate it on the fly without pushing any buttons, the swift change between bikes (I can do mine in under 2 minutes) and I got a great club deal on it. All of the units out there seem to be really top-notch; I really had a more difficult time selecting the head unit! I have found the 500 to be great, the 800 was a little funky when it first came out, but it has gotten better with the firmware updates since it first sold. |

that friend is no average guy. He had the 2nd fastest overall (counting pro) bike split and then ran a 3 hour marathon in the heat of Louisville! Yeah I guess I left out he was a pro duathlete. My point is a fast swim doesn’t always matter. |
