Well, my summer began and so did a stomach flu! All I could do yesterday was 20 mins on the bike and some weights. Couldn't do anything Monday. I am getting ready to go for a run soon and see how it goes. It stinks being sick! I haven't been ill in over a year!

Here's another thing that gets me. I'm not a real small person. I've lost 70 pounds in the last 5 years, but I'm still a good size woman --size 14 or so. Still working on losing, but slowly at this point. I tell people that I've done sprint triathlons and 10K's and they look at me and say "Wow! Could you run the whole thing?" I just wanna say "Yeah, my fat *ss can beat yours too!" but I don't. This happened to me several times before and again yesterday. If someone skinny came along and said the same thing, they wouldn't say that I know. It's just rude and I am tired of it!

I hope you feel better. Summer colds are worse than winter colds IMO.

Great job on the weight loss and you're smart to lose it slowly. It stays off when you do it that way and you don't burn out on the starvation diets.

As far as people saying rude stuff I think you have to look at it as controlling the things in your life that you can control. And you are doing that. You're active and enjoying life. You cannot control people's stupid comments or their predetermined opinions based upon first impressions.

I would have fun with it and the next time say would you like to race? And while they stutter follow it up with how much of a head start would you require to make it fair? You can say it in a jovial and yet ball busting tone where they would get the message without being totally pissed off or offended.

This way you're not holding it in and letting resentment build. Negative emotions will effect your training and every other aspect of your life. Don't let others control who you are or let their negative outlook influence you.

/two cents

So my boyfriend at times can sound negative when he is actually trying to be sarcastic and joking.

A perfect example was when I ran my first 5k in May this year.  I came home, he was in bed and I woke him up.  He asked me how it went and I said it was great.  I accomplished my two goals: 1) run the whole thing and, 2) run negative splits.  He asked me how quickly I ran it and I told him I was running at about a 12/mile pace.  His response was something to the effect that when he was in high school, he was running six minute miles.  My response was, well get your lazy out of bed and let's run a mile right now (after I had biked 10 miles to/from the race and ran the 5K).  He pretty much turned over and went back to sleep.

After a very heated argument about this, he told me that he was being sarcastic about it and meant that here he was, being lazy, sleeping when I had biked  and ran.   I think we have finally gotten on the same page but I think a lot of it is his own insecurity and jealousy for knowing he's not able to do what I've been able to accomplish and I think that might be helpful when you hear someone say that.

LMAO good for you! I like that you stood up for yourself... Get your BF to do some of these activities with you...

Okay here is a couple of questions for everyone.

1) What made you decide to do a triathlon?

2) What is your athletic background, if any? Marathon runner? cyclist? checkers champion??

1) I've always wanted to do one.  Lifetime Fitness (the club I work out at) does a series each year and I've always said that was something I wanted to do.  Last year my best friend signed up for one and I was going to do it with her, but I didn't get my butt in gear with training.  So, I watched her cross the finish line and I felt like crap, I think that that was a time I felt the worst about myself because I had no reason I wasn't crossing the line with her except for me being lazy.  So I decided to get my butt in gear and do it this year.

Another motiviation for me has been to lose the weight.  So far in my training I have gotten half-way to my goal (in ten weeks) so I'm really shooting for getting to my goal weight with my A race (which is in 11 weeks).

2) Background - nothing.  I wasn't a runner (before I started training I hadn't run more than two miles without stopping.  I have been spiroatic with working out - misc cardio and weight lifting in the past.  In high school I played softball but stopped as soon as I got my license and realized partying was more fun

I agree with the previously stated good for you for not taking it lying down, like he was. Sarcasm funny vs sarcasm mean can be a thin line. When I do it I always include a $h!t eating grin so they know I'm kidding but at the same time they hear the message and know I wasn't totally kidding. Like everybody I cross the line at times and end up eating an apology sandwich.

Anyway standing up for yourself and not letting your boyfriends negativity and limits effect you was 100% the way to go.

1) What made you decide to do a triathlon?

2) What is your athletic background, if any? Marathon runner? cyclist? checkers champion??

I've known about triathlon for the past 17 years when I started long distance cycling with a now good friend of mine.  He did 3 of the sprint distance races and got me interested.  But I reluctant to seriously train for one because of the high impact that comes from running.  I recently got over that fear when I started training for a 10k a few years ago.  However, after training incorrectly and racing that 10k, I ended up injuring my left patella tendon.  Got sidelined by that for a bit until about a year ago after I completed physical therapy.   After some casual runs during the week there has been no pain and now (many months after getting into running again) my distances have increased w/o pain past a 5k so now I'm confident I can finish a sprint tri!  =)

As far as athletic background, I've been a long distance cyclist (30-50miles) for the past 17 years but mostly as a weekend warrior type.  I recently learned how to swim freestyle long distances about a year ago studying online videos and documents.  Been bowling for about 10 years and I currently average in the high 210s.  =)

@ Charminchick -- I totally agree with Scott's 2 cents here!  On the other end of your situation, I'm a pretty slim guy and every now and then bigger guys size me up at bowling.  "Skinny guys can't bowl, I bet he rolls his ball like a girl at 10mph."  This happened one time during practice.  I took 20 bucks, put it on the table, and said with a smile, "Let's bowl."  Halfway through the game they see my ball speed is close to theirs and I was kicking their a$$.  They ending up telling me I was using a cheater ball and left.  ^_^

Okay here is a couple of questions for everyone.

1) What made you decide to do a triathlon? Lost 85 lbs in past year, needed something to say on track.

2) What is your athletic background, if any? Marathon runner? cyclist? checkers champion?? Used to competitive swim but you would never know it now...also played hockey and rugby.

1) I was in the process of losing weight and getting fit. I LOVE swimming and had been running. I walked my first 5K in September and decided to run one. From there, I thought triathlons would help me reach a high level of fitness.

2) I was a great swimmer and love the water. I ran a bit in high school, but not like I am now. I am not a great biker, but I am learning to love it. I was more of a casual bike rider.

I totally agree, let your performance show them. Don't listen to them. I get this all the time, people sizing me up at the beginning of the swim. The pass in the water, and think they are doing great until on the Bike, I pass them almost like they are standing still. I finish, change and have my recovery drink waiting for them to finish. It's FUN...

Yeah, I have been sized up on the swim and passed them in the water (of course, they get me later).

Scary that the Patriots who have been the best team in football the past decade are the hometown team that's the longest since winning a championship. I wonder if some of the kids who are around 20 realize how special this decade has been. I bet they take it for granted. Living through the barren years of Boston sports you really appreciate it.

Cut out of swim after 45 minutes and 2300 yards. With Sundays race that put me at 7200 yards for the week. I felt pretty strong for most of the workout but we got to the kick drills and my legs are dragging so I bagged it. More than happy with my three swims this week.

1.  I got into running a few years ago, and my wife's been a competitive swimmer all her life.  The two interests just sorta collided.

2.  I was a basketball player through high school.  And unfortunately, not a very good one.  I'd like to say all of those sprints make me a faster triathlete today.  But I'd be lying.

Going to do a light swim, jog and bike over the next 2 days. Need to test out the bike tuneup/repairs before race day.

Can't remember the last time I was this nervous!

What kind of breakfast do you eat? Light? Bacon, sausage, eggs, hasbrowns, and toast(just kidding)

Scot -my heartrate zone was upper Z3 pretty consistently.  I think I am getting in better shape because previously it was hard to stay in Z3 and I had to really slow myself down.  Now, I will go up to a low Z4 when pushing a hill but am able to come rate back down when I run or bike down the hill.  I think at the end of the summer I will go in and get my zones tested again.  For my tri in a few weeks I am not planning on wearing the HR monitor.  I feel like I have a good feel for where my body is as far as energy output and usually on my runs I guess where my hr is before I look at my monitor and I'm usually within 2 bpm. I think some of the intervals I did last weekend and then the hills here are actually pushing me into a better shape than I thought they would.

So I know there are tri checklists out there, and I am going to create one for my first tri on the BT site, but wanted to see if anyone had anything they'd like to add to my list.  Something that you have found useful to have.

I did see that there are race number belts, I am definitely going to get one of those.

I'm a type A personality and making lists is one of my hobbies Wink so I figured that my first tri is in thirteen days I better start preparing my lists.

Thanks!

Jen,

Send me your list at [email protected] and I'll compare it to what mine is. I'll respond in here on what I suggest you should get.

Hi Scott,

May I use your email address to send a copy of my training schedule?  I have a B race happening on July 31 (I signed up for an earlier one heeding your advice) and an A race September 11.  Both are sprint tris.  I'd like you to review it and let me know what you think if that's okay.  What spreadsheet program are you using?

charminchick - I agree with everything everyone else said.  I am still battling my weight as well and not one person at work even works out.  They all roll their eyes when I grab my bag to go swimming after work (11:30pm), but I do this for me and they can think what they want.  This forum has been so helpful for me because when you are surrounded by people that don't workout they don't want talk about training plans, race strategy etc.  Anyway, I certainly don't look like someone who would do a tri, but I am not sitting on my butt and eatting fast food.  In the end, we will have the last laugh.

You go girl.  I am proud of all your accomplishments and you should be too!  And a masters to boot....way to go.

I love hearing the responses to thor's q about the triathlon.  Here are mine:

1.  I have been trying to get back into running shape for 3 years, after a broken leg and then a tendon repair and kept getting injured. Finally back in February I had an IT band problem that did not allow me to run at all (the best I could do is hobble) and could not bike with any resistance higher than 3.  Decided that I would have to swim.  This was to me a new low.  Swimming was giving up on getting in shape and being able to run again.  Well, found out I liked it and after I discovered I was out of running for 7 weeks thought why not do a triathlon!

2. I was a runner in high school.  This was in 1975-1977, which was the dark ages, the days when girls had GRA (girls recreational activities) twice a week in jr high, then could compete in some sports in high school.  We did not have a girls cc team so I decided to compete on the boys team and was the 3rd jv runner.  Our coach was a great guy and would open the school all winter so one guy and I could run and shower before school started every day.  In college, I ran cc and track and even got a small scholarship for D2.  Title 9 was in effect but you had better not question whether there were violations.  Let's say the athletic director said, "If I don't like girls with red hair and you have red hair I can kick you off the team because I want".  And my mom even told me that she was concerned if I ran I wouldn't be able to have children because all that running may injury my reproductive organs.  So, I ran in spite of everything and I have always been a person to set my own goals.  After children, (from zero to 3 in 3-1/2 years) I had to put my running on hold.  I've been struggling to get back in shape ever since.  The tri training seems to be the ticket for me.  I haven't been injured since I started training and I think it is due to the fact that I am working different muscles daily.  I love it and haven't been in this good of shape in forever.  Also, the big kick in the butt was turning 50.  Both my mom, her grandmother had a stroke at age 50 (plus two of her aunts had strokes early on).  I have actually been able to decrease my medication while keeping my blood pressure under control.  Win-win.Wink
