Since I was sick last week I didn't feel up to sharing about my son, so here it goes Q.

He was born in 1988, also with a congenital heart defect, though worse than mine.  He had his open heart surgery when he was 6 and is doing well.  Now the interesting part.  Back then A D D was the "new" diagonsis for kids with behavioral issues or in my opinion, because he wouldn't sit still in nursery school.  Now, I don't think kids should sit still for 8 hours at 4 yrs old.  But this school wanted him to.  This unfortunately convince my then wife and I that he had a learning disorder and needed to be tested.  So we did the doctors and shrinks to find out what was "wrong" with him. Well, after a few years of medication and "special" classes it was finally determined that he was not ADD afterall.

I think as parents we need to trust our doctors but also go with your gut.  Tommy's cardiologist wanted him to have his heart surgery when he was 2 or 3.  I wanted him to get older and strong and wanted to wait until he became more symptomatic.  My gut feeling.

I guess what I'm saying is that your own feelings and knowing your kids trumps everyone else.  I just regret not feeling this way when he was getting medicine that was for nothing other than the diagnosis de jeur.

MAY THE LEGS BE WITH US!  Hooth is a great planet, lot's of ice.  LOL

I think I'm delirious with cramps right now.

OK folks, happy thoughts! Gotta go feed the kids (they want to eat, like every day! it's exhausting!).

1. A lot of us have had a tough week...but we're still engaged here, even though we're complaining, which means we still care, which means we all will get back on the wagon, soon (I already have).

2. It's a tough time of year...at the Academy we called this stretch between Christmas vacation and Spring Break the "Dark Ages" and to this day, I still struggle with depression and the blahs...helps to recognize and name it. So, we're in the Dark Ages! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! There I feel better!

3. Personally I am in a great place, my son has started school and he is loving it and the teachers love him (for all of his 'issues' he is a sweet, funny kid and pretty pleasant to be around). I feel a lot better about it, and thanks for SO many of you coming forward with your stories...WOW! Made me feel so much better to hear how many kids have gotten help and gotten through 'rough patches.' Who's the mentoree now???

4. And on another personal victory note, I am going in for my 10 week post-op checkup which means, REHAB! and my surgeon doesn't know it yet, but he's gonna clear me to run today...

Smiles everyone, SMILES!!!

OMG,

I am glad we are all trying to be positive and keep smiling, because my Ortho appointment did NOT go as planned. Basically it turns out that my Ortho is completely freaked out by my tri hobby and wants me to give up running and swimming for the next year. According to him I am flirting with disaster and IM is completely right out! AAAAAAHHHH!

Not one to take that lying down, I karate chopped him in the neck, slapped the PT on the butt, stole their jar of candy and yelled "Mys-tri Tour Rocks" at them on the way out the door.

Well, not really...I didn't steal their candy...

Ugh! Seriously?!? Now is the time that I am wondering if an athlete/surgeon would be more likely to bless my kind of activity needs or if he is truly basing his conservatism on science. I am suspicious because he is super freaked out by a marathon and you could tell thinks 'tri' is even more ridiculous.

My husband thinks if it doesn't hurt I should try, but then I went for a short run outside and it DID hurt, so I am somewhere between DR Buzzkill and DR Daddyanythinggoes...going to give it a week off at a time and do short/slow runs to test it out as time goes by and ride my bike. A LOT.

But it looks like I will be very conservative about entering any races, except Time Trials, until I can tell for sure that my shoulder is going to cooperate.

Argh!

On a brighter note, i got him so flustered about IM training that he actually forgot to forbid me to run...so...

I WIN!

Hahahahaha.

Oh Q I'm sorry it didn't go as planned! Second opinion? Maybe a sports ortho? Do you have a university nearby that has an ortho that treats the athletes?

I went to one Ortho for shin splints from running (which I was worried might be a stress fracture) and he was like 70 years old himself and he told me that "our bodies are getting older, I can't play basketball anymore, and I think it's time for you to accept that you can't run anymore" HELLO?!?! I was 36 years old! Not 70! Needless to say, got a second opinion and when I told the new doc what the other had said he burst out laughing! Told me to forget that advice and to keep trying with exercises and stretching, etc.

You don't want to re-injure but you need a doc who understands tri/running and can also help you achieve your goals.  Let us know how it goes!

I hope you told him on the way out, as you were tearing open the starburst, that he "brought that sh!!t upon himself!!".  Seriously, major suckage but the first thing I thought of when reading this was the beginning of "Born to Run" and the opposing approaches taken by the different specialists based on their backgrounds. I think a second opinion with a more sports oriented Doc might be a good idea.

OMG! Just busted out laughing! Q, I definitely agree on the university route. I am at Georgia and the sports therapy group for athletes is where I have been for my ankle. (it appears in hind sight I have torn and or extremely stretched things that shouldn't) They have me doing all sorts of exercises like balancing on the "sore" ankle, yoga stretches, band exercises, etc. Of course the recommendation was pool, pool, pool, but I have yet to make it! Anywhooo...find a way to work with your body to build strength. OH - compression sock is love, love, love, offers stability even moving around the house.

Q, similar to my post about my son.  You know how you feel and a second opinion is warranted.  I thought my cardiologist would freak out when I told him about Tri, he told me to go for it, not worry about weights, and just do cardio.  Maybe back to sprint tri so you know your body will handle it.

I agree with the rest of the group...2nd opinion and find a doc who treats athletes or is an athlete.  That's absurd.

DH did IM-Louisville last year with a few buddies.  It was end of August.  In early June, his buddy Robert had a bike crash and busted his collar bone into 3 pieces.  Yes, I said 3 pieces.  Surgery and 6 screws later, he took about 3 weeks off and then started to slowly train again.  Would you believe the crazy dude finished the IM-L???  It was 11 weeks and 1 day from his injury.

Do you need to wait a year to start training again?  Hell no!  Should you wait more than 3 weeks from injury/surgery?  Probably!!  But you're already LONG past that.  Get a new doc and listen to your body.

Hang in there, Q!!!

Ok so what does he say about Cross season??

Freaking out the doc!!  that's  the fun part!    I agree with your  live-in doc.     I would even think "some pain" is ok.     The thing is you ran a marathon with your shoulder all torn up.  So he knows you are a warrior.     I'm thinking the doc  is of course going to be a bit tentative, in letting a warrior go out and do her thing so easily.   99.9%  of people would never attempt what you would.  So he does not know if you will stop when stopping is warranted.

I'm just wondering about the two diff time horizons.  Its not the same doctor that said you could swim in June??

I'm  of the opinion that "some"  pain is going to be part of the process.  That its a fine line.  Too wait for zero pain is not realistic,  nor may it ever really come.    Somehow you have to "know"  which pain it really is.     Pretty hard.   That's why you will keep seeking answers.  But probably you will never get them.      The doctor is always going to CYA   They cannot condone it.

Just keep with your plan  it sounds really smart.   Lots of bike!  and keep testing the run.    I also cannot think of a more satisfying way to do Ironman  than to overcome this obstacle.     YOU WILL DO THIS!

I LOVE this story. 100-year-old Frenchman breaks cycling's one-hour distance record (for his age group) and turns out to be a quote machine, too.

Hi all,

I thought of a couple other swimming related questions:  first, are earplugs allowed? and second is there anything that can prevent or quickly overcome foot cramps during the swim.  I seem to get foot cramps just shy of a mile.  I stop stretch my foot and proceed onward, but thats probably not practical during an actual event.

I'm off of training until next week Wednesday now...vacation.  I'm hoping that snowshoeing and downhill skiing count as recovery!

Get well people!Smile

So let me get this straight:

2 of us have heart problems,

some of us are over weight, and loosing it!

RA

Busted Bones

Colds and Flu

Kids (really a blessing)

and jobs!

Are we havin' fun yet?  Actually, I am! Kudos to the leaders.   I think this is the first time in my life, not kidding, I have run over 11 minutes.  My knees and shins don't hurt, my thighs are recovering by the next day.  Damn the Doctors, full speed ahead.

May the Legs be with You!

I'm going with "MAY THE LEGS BE WITH YOU"!

Managed to run for 2miles straight (on a treadmill) without stopping on Tuesday.  Stretched really good before and after and my legs felt okay the next day, miracle.  Of course they're sore now but that's from yesterday's swim and bike

Run scheduled for tomorrow...hoping for the best, last saturday was not so good, so I'm due for some success

I wish I could have biked today, it's 76 degrees here in NC! Not bad for February!

Yvonne,  Nice work out.   I remember taking a stress test and it seems the treadmill is easier, is that true?  I know cycling indoors is easier than outdoors, aside from the butt pain.

I can't wait until I can run the 2 mile loop straight.

Hey everyone. Checking in. Still have not had any soda (pop) since midnight on Wednesday. Haven't killed anyone but I will not commit to trying to if they mess with me on the soda. I think people at work and home know not to mess with the coffee thing. That I will kill for, and actually I bet they serve coffee in prison so I would still get it. Lol.

Q, sorry to hear about the pain, the shoulder not the hubby. I would get a second opinion. There has to be one with a sports background for you to see that will give it to you straight. I chuckled at the stuff your hubby said. Whenever someone asks me certain types of questions I do say that they can do it, but plan on coming to the ER for treatment and ridicule.
I agree we are a walking wounded. Are we going to let us get down by that? Nope. With my RA there might be a day that I will not be able to run but with all my power and God's blessings I will hold that day off for as long as I can.

Like!

Treadmill IS easier by a lil bit.  set the incline at 1 incline to counter act that.       In my estimation, its about a 10 sec per mile diff if there is no incline added.        Now cycling indoors being easier?   that depends.    I can tell you that on a compu-trainer  its more difficult,  and actual out door riding is easier!     So I think it really depends on what trainer you are using.

Oh man scary moment this Am.    drive way was all icy   I was scraping the ice off my Jeeps windows  came around and slipped and landed HARD on my back and right arm elbow area.   Head even hit the ground.  (no I was not wearing a helmet ha!)      It was such a hard landing  that I just stayed still for a few seconds as I thought it was possible I did real damage.   Like broke my elbow or something.     But lucky it seems like other than some bruises which will surely form,  I'm ok.    <wipes sweat off>

Just a reminder, that stuff can happen at ANY time.  you just don't know.

Enjoy your vacation!!   Ear plugs are allowed  no issue there.  Cramps?  I used to get foot cramps like that as well.   I'm sure there is something you can do, not sure what it is, so I'll leave that to the expert.      I stopped having them, but this was over a long period of swimming.  What I mean is the more my swim fitness grew, the less foot cramps I had over time.    So probably this will be one of those things that will slowly stop happening.

When I see posts like this, then YES I'm having fun!       congrats Tom!

Seriously, it feels like someone stuck a caulk gun up my nose and pulled the trigger! I did get a workout in yesterday and I DID feel better! Got your PM on the race situation...we need to get you guys down here for a visit, or us up there so we can figure everything out...

I say let's do Bigfoot and stay at a fun water park place for the kids...

I was shocked Door County sold out, is that the norm? Should we register for Racine? It didn't even sell out last year...and I was waiting to see what my shoulder does, but I don't want to miss it either...ugh????

Bigfoot works for me!  and  Timber Ridge Resort   is a great place for the kids.     We can chat about it at your house, Sham shuffle time!  That's coming up fast!

Ya bummed Door closed so quick as well.   It does seem that lots of events are filling up super duper quick this year.  Its crazy!!     I think there is still plenty of time to register for Racine.  Probably till April anyhow   So you can wait.....  I think?     I'd be nervous about it too.

Last year around Feb. 3 we had a bad ice storm in NJ.  Walked out to door at 6 am to take out garbage. Must have been, and I'm not kidding, 1 inch of ice on the steps.  (This is where I SHOULD HAVE STOPPED!).  Got to the walkway, took one step, feet out from under me. My head hits the edge of the last step.  I can honestly say: I'M NOT DEAD YET!.  I believe I should be.  I got up, crawled into the house, put the dog in her crate, called the ambulance, called out of work, and waited for help with a wet rag on my head.  Got 6 staples in my head and I don't understand why I didn't go unconcious either. Dave, I feel your pain.

Thank goodness you're ok.
