I'm growing out this pixie cut into something that's chin length, and I'm starting to look like Justin Bieber.  Totally not hot.  Off to look for hats so I can hide......

I chopped all my hair off in August and I absolutely love it, but I'm terrified of when I decide to grow it out again for this exact reason.  That middle ground is AWKWARD.

So I'm signed up for a masters swim class that starts on Sunday.  It's supposed to be tri-focused, and the woman running it just emailed all of us with information.  Apparently she uses the TI drills, which I have heard very mixed things about - mostly negative.  Is this something I should be worried about?  I could say forget it and work on my own.  I teach at a college and have several students in my department on the swim team who could help me with my stroke (I've already asked them and they're happy to), so I wouldn't be completely on my own.  Also, I'm not that terrible in the pool to begin with.  I just wanted to get better.

Also - Good luck with your surgery Jeff!

Good luck Jeff rizer!!!! Hope you have an easy day and and easier recovery!

I looked into a masters swim class at the Y locally. They said they worked on 4 different strokes, which I have no interest in at all. They also had a tri specific swim class, but the times were awful for me - 7-8am - too busy of a time in my house to bail. Still looking for something else...

i am not feeling good, i am achy, tired and cranky, i have skipped workouts since wednesday...blech.....

I had a dream last night that i got out of the swim at my "A" half iron race and wandered around looking for transition and my bike....sulking like a little girl....till i had lost like an hour, only to realize they had changed the transition area to a ways away from swim out, and i had wandered the wrong way as bikers and runners passed me while i was looking.  It was certainly a weird dream, anyone care to over analyze??  LOL

On the hamstring pain issue, that has me confused, as USUALLY, when you cycle, you are engaging the glutes and quads, not so much the hammies. That is strange, and i have no thought or answer for that??

is it possible that you are pedaling past 6 oclock??  I know some triathletes like to Slide/scrape their foot through the bottom of the stroke (and Coach Troy in Spinervals), and that certainly engages the hammies. Your quads are the stronger muscles and the time you spend pedaling past 6 you should already be pushing down with the other leg to relieve strain/start recovery on the first leg.

Cyclists are know for having too strong quads and too weak (relativley) hammies, it is what causes a variety of overuse injuries such as hamstring tendonitis, piroformis, dead butt syndrome etc.

From what I have noticed so far is that I was pushing down hard and then leaving that leg limp while starting to push with the other leg.  That adds weight that has to be lifted by the mashing leg.  Counterproductive.  Now I lift with my flexor just enough to feel the top of my shoe.  I can ride now 2.5 hrs and do not feel the hammie screaming.

On a side note- I have often questioned my first bike fit and should get a new fit.

At home today my 2 year old son has the Croup Cough he sounds like a barking seal. Have a doctors appointment at 1:45. Sort of screws things up as tonight was supposed to be date night seeing my wifes birthday is on Sunday.

Have to fit in a 1:00 Zone 2 run today. As I either dodge snowflakes and snow plows or just hit the tready for some mental tourture.

Cindy gets to feeling that way about a dozen or so times a year.  :P

I had that dream about a week before Austin last year.  Freaked me the F out.  Made me overly paranoid race day, especially since there were 2 seperate transitions.

Matt Cole at Podium Multisports does an awesome bike fit.  He fit me when he was at All3Sports.  He has since left All3 to start his own tri shop - Podium Multisports.  I have not been to his new shop, but he's good!

Yeah, I cut nearly 14 inches off my hair in August...think boy short.  It is cute, but I hate putting so much product on my hair.  I figure I can get it to where I can tuck it and not put product in it anymore.  It's been awkward for about a month, but now it's just a situation.  I just ordered 2 slouchy hats off of urbanoutfitters.com.  That will be my style for the next 2+ months.

I would swim with the masters class even if they do TI drills.  They're only drills.  You'll probably be swimming a lot of challenging main sets where it won't even matter if the coach's orientation is TI.  Just my personal opinion.

Having a good bike fit is key -- especially when you're spending as much time as you are on the bike.

I'm toying with the idea of returning to vegetarianism (or at least pescetariansim), but I'm unsure of how this will affect my training and my energy.  I know several of you have lived/are living vegan lifestyles.  I was a lacto-ovo vegetarian for almost 10 years, but I wasn't training like I do now.  Can anyone share their experience with me?  I will mostly likely xpost this on the nutrition board.

I had this problem when I was marathon training in 2010. Running a lot, little to no cycling or swimming. Legs and butt were a mess. Once I started Ironman training and was cycling and swimming along with all the running all of my problems went away. Something to be said for the ability of all three sports to keep you balanced!

I was vegetarian for quite a while before going vegan, and I've been vegan for a year and a half now.  Since my veggie days I have run two marathons (and trained for two others, but was sick for one and injured for another - neither of which had anything to do with diet), and am training for my third marathon, 2 olympics, a HIM and my first IM this year.

Once I cut out the animal products, I felt amazing, and have never felt better.  I don't have any issues with heavy training loads or hard workouts.  But you definitely want to make sure you're eating good, whole foods.  It's easy when you first make that transition to rely on overly processed meat replacement products or processed dips and spreads.  These things are fine, in moderation.  But some people center their diet around those, which probably won't make you feel too hot.

Some people will give you a hard time about it and insist that you are not going to get all the nutrients you need, but that couldn't be further from the truth.  As long as you're eating lots of fruits and veggies and healthy fats, you won't have a problem.  There's plenty of protein, calcium, etc. in those foods.  One thing to be conscious of is B12.  On a vegetarian diet you shouldn't have a problem, since this is still abundant in dairy products.  But on a vegan diet it's more difficult to get - which is why I take a B12 supplement daily (the only one I take).  You could also put chlorella (dried freshwater algae - you can find it in your local health food store) in your smoothies, since that's high in B12.

Overall, just enjoy it and have fun trying new recipes.  I discovered all sorts of great new foods when  I changed my diet, and realized that I love cooking.  It's a lot of fun.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

I got the helmet today.  It fits great.  And thank you for the clif shot!  I've been interested in trying that out and hadn't gotten around to it yet, so that's perfect.

I did the same thing.  My hair was down to my elbows and now it's boy short.  I love it for now, but the frequent haircuts are a bit tough.  The hats are a good idea for the in between stages.  I'll have to remember that for the future.

That does make me feel better about the masters group.  I've never done one before.  I've always just swam on my own, so I have no idea what to expect.
