Ok, so I hadn’t posted up anything about my daily diet as others have yet. It’s been a busy week with more snow events for the plow company and our construction company breaking ground on two new buildings this week.

At any rate, my diet has been running pretty much like this 90% of the time for a few months now:

Breakfast:

- Bowl of Cheerios or instant oatmeal with a banana and ½ cup non-fat milk

A.m. Snacks:

- 8:00 or so a banana or clementines
- 10:00 – 10:30 snack is something like a Detour protein bar

Lunch:

- Deli turkey or chicken and slice of swiss cheese
- Fresh bell pepper or celery
- 1 TBSP peanut butter

Afternoon Snacks:

- Some type of crunchy carb snack (tortilla chips, snap pea crisps, or Trader Joe’s savory thins)
- Apple or Clementines

Dinner:

- Lean protein (Generally salmon, chicken breast or Costco black bean burger)
- Some type of complex carb like brown rice, bulgur, quinoa or mix thereof
- 1 ½ cups or more of vegetable (frozen mixed, broccoli, snap peas, etc…)
- Small spinach or mixed green salad with Balsamic

Post workout for evening workouts:

- 10 oz muscle milk

Some days I will substitute a mostly spinach green shake made with protein enhancement for either breakfast or lunch.

As I said, this is probably the reality for me right now 5-6 days out of seven. I have been generally having one day per weekend that is not nearly as strict and will include a couple of beers and/or wine with meals. I know my caloric intake, and likely mix of fat, CHO, protein will need to change as I get closer to a healthy racing weight and increased workout stress.

For now though, this has been pretty effective in keeping a steady weight loss going for 6 months or so. About another 25-30 pounds (hopefully by April or so) and I will start to look at a more training focused diet as opposed to weight reduction focused diet.

Any thoughts or recommendations from anyone on what I may be missing or doing too much of are greatly appreciated.

Chris

I'm always curious about the gear people use. So, I thought it might be interesting to do a little survey and see what everyone uses/likes. This it not meant to be a "look at all my gear" thing. Our group has a variety of levels from new triathletes to some that are very experienced. For me, as I got more involved in triathlon, I got more and more stuff. Feel free to list as much or as little as you like or add other categories.

Running: Saucony Mirage III for most runs. Hoka Bondi B for long/easy recovery runs. Zoot Ultra Tempo 5.0-raceday tri shoe. I like running shorts with a full compression liner...currently using Brooks and Nike. Shirt-stinky left over race shirts. Visor; Ipod shuffle w/yurbud earbuds

Swimming: Speedo Endurance jammers; Goggles Tyr Nest Pro-best goggles I have used and they are relatively cheap. Wetsuit-Roka Maverick Sleevless. Swimskin-Kiwami

Biking: Tri bike -2010 Blue Triad SL; Road bike-2013 Scott Foil 20; Shoes-Specialized Tri Vent expert; Saddle-Cobb V Max Plus; Tires-Continental GP 4000S; Everyday wheels-Williams System 30 with PT hub; Shorts-Specialized or Desoto 400 mile bibs. Trainer-Emotion rollers; Race wheels Zipp 404FC/Zipp PT disc.  Specialized helmet; LG aero race helmet

Electronics: Garmin 310xt for running and races; Garmin 500 on the bike

Tri suit-LG custom team 2 piece ; Previously used Desoto shorts and top and they are very good.

Nutrition: Fluid brand drinks; GU Mandarin Orange w/caffeine gels

Other categories??

It gets a bit absurd when you start to list it all out. Hello, my name is Randy and I have a gear problem

The gear question could take a few hours to pull together, so here's my abbreviated favorites:

Favorite wetsuit:  Xterra Vendetta  (although I raced in a 2XU this year)

Favorite goggles:  Aquasphere Kayenne's

Favorite Pool Toy: Finis Tempo Trainer

Favorite Tracking Device:  910XT for the run and swim, Joule for the bike (although I'm using a 510 currently)

Favorite Power Meter:  PowerTap (although I also have a Quarq on the Parlee)

Favorite Running Shoe:  Saucony Cortana 2s (bought up all of the 2s I could find.  I hate the new 3s)

Wish me well, I have my first really long run, for the Boston build-up 3:05 tomorrow.  I pray I can get outside vs slugging it out on the TM!

My gear list is growing, but apprehensively. I've golfed most of my life and used the same clubs from ages 15-30, although I recently did upgrade. I knew the flaws weren't in my equipment, they were in me/my swing. I feel similar about my tri stuff. I have zero qualms about people having whatever they have, well besides typical jealousy, I just have my own reasons to own what I own.

Run - Nike Pegasus with Yankz! laces. One pair of shoes. They fit and fit well, not looking to change... right now. I just wear typical gym shorts but I won't wear anything besides a tech shirt. I feel like I'm choking if I wear a cotton shirt, definitely became a tech shirt snob.

Bike - Trek 1.5 with profile design T3 aero bars. Everything else on it is stock. Shimano SH-31 Tri shoe with Shimano SPD cleats. I'm 32, turning 33 this year, I told myself if I'm still racing (only been in this 1 full season) at 35 I'll treat myself to a TT bike. It's SO hard to hold off. My cousin works at a shop that sells Trek, so assuming a speed concept fits me, that's what I'm going for. All these sales and season leftovers pop up and I just have to stay strong. Also have a few "kits" of bike shorts and jerseys as I do like to wear something that doesn't flap in the wind on the bike. Also have a Nashbar Fluid Trainer with TrainerRoad for the winter.

Swim - Xterra full wetsuit. Half a dozen different pairs of goggles, mostly inexpensive Speedo ones or TYR as I found those fit my face pretty well, again no reason to change... for now. Bunch of caps from races.

Watch- Timex Global Trainer. I have a heart rate strap, GSC sensor for the bike, foot pod for the run. I know it's a step down from a lot of the Garmin products, but for $125 (sale on Amazon) I love it.

Race gear - I have TYR Tri shorts and TYR Tri tanks. Didn't even get them at the same time, just happened they had good deals on what I was looking for. Last year my wife got me a sweet pair of Oakley's that I only use for running and biking because I'm terrible at breaking sun glasses. Love them.

Right now there isn't anything on my MUST have list for this race season. I'd like to look into getting some hydration between my aero bars, but honestly besides that I think I'm good to go for the year... unless there's a really good deal on a Speed Concept!

Okay, here is my list:

Run: Brooks Ghost 6, lululemon speed shorts, any jog bra, prefer head sweat running visors over hat.

Swim- 1 or 2 piece swim suit brand doesn't really matter.  TYR Vanquisher Goggles for pool, Aqua Sphere for OWS, Wetsuit-Blue Seventy Helix, DeSoto 2 piece bib john, long sleeve and sleeveless- for sale!!, name the pool toy and i have it

Bike- Currently have a 2009 Cervelo P2C, Guru 901 on order, Power Tap rear wheel, Q-rings, Ultergra, Cobb Just off the Front Saddle, LG Bike shoes, Really cute pair of Sidi Pink and White cycling shoes (for sale) worn 4 times on trainer, Dark Speed works bento box, Rudy Project aero helmet, Giro Aero Helmet (for sale) , Tires Michelin Pro Race 3, Wheels- Sram 60 and 90 ( may be for sale), HED Jet 5 (may be for sale),

Electronics- Garmin 910 XT, Power Tap, Waterproof Ipod, HR monitor, foot pod, cadence sensor, Swim Sense watch (for sale)

Tri Suit- custom 2 piece tri suit, I like Soas (women) and De Soto tri clothing, Kiwami 1 piece suit

Nutrition- UCAN, GU Roctane Gel, real food, Envrit- speed, Honey Stinger Waffle's..

Other items that I love- Neoprene Seat Cover from the Wet Spot. http://www.amazon.com/SURFACE-Wet-Spot-Seat-Cover/dp/B001DXUBX4

... use it after races, running, swimming, cycling.. Keeps the car seat dry and clean,

Large Tool Box- I keep this packed with triathlon odds and ends and keep it in the car at races in case of emergency. Box is stocked with extra tubes, goggles, scissors, tape, crack pipe, etc.,

This is probably my FAVORITE non-gear item that I use every day: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80189663/

I have 2 of these in the laundry room in different colors. One for hanging clean workout clothing to dry. I don't dry any of my workout clothes. The other one is for airing out/drying nasty wet workout clothes until I do laundry. Since I live in Texas my workout clothes are normally pretty wet and nasty. I've also considered buying a boot or shoe dryer to use on my running shoes during the summer. Right now I just rotate running shoes.

Gulp.

Saucony. Four pair of Kinvaras ( two need to be retired but I can't part with them yet-this is my go-to shoe for every distance and almost every condition), A5 racing flats (new favorite shoe), Virratas (jury still out)

Hoka. Two pairs of Bondi Bs (2011,2013)

Newton. Distance, Distance S, Gravity (newtons and I are currently not getting along)

Mizuno. Trail shoes (old, use them a lot in the winter but rarely otherwise)

Brooks. Green Silence, Pure Project (drift?)

K-Swiss. Racing flat-not sure what model but fast and comfortable.

Asics. 1130. Meh.

Zoot. Two pairs. Need to be retired but once again I can't bear to get rid of them. I might want them again......

Nike. Free-very rarely makes it in to rotation but would be great for a fast 5 or 10K.

That is only 19. I am sure I have missed a pair or three. There is currently a moratorium on running shoe purchases in my house. I'm not sure why.

Randee-I have used just about every between the aerobars hydration setup. Bought and tried all of the new ones that came out last year. Will try to put together a review over the weekend. The biggest problem I have with most of the set ups is being able to easily see my Garmin 500 with any of the hydration systems. I've been meaning to pull them out and evaluate which I may use in the upcoming season.

Monster swim of 4200 yards done this afternoon and an easy 35 minutes on the bike. 90 minute bike workout tomorrow with short run and 75 minute bike on Sunday. Done swimming for the week!

Equipment. There is so much. I'm just going to tell about my race day equipment.

Basic outfit: Kiwami Prima or DeSoto riviera tri shorts with Kiwami or Zoot top.

Swim: Aquaman Cell Gold wetsuit. Speedo Vanquish goggles (2 pairs in case something bad happens to a pair. I have a clear pair and a blue pair that are designated as race only goggles. They are kept in storage and only come out on race day). Race supplied swim cap. Small bottle of anti fog for goggles. DeSoto Liftfoil swim skin if not wetsuit legal. Water bottle full of nutrition to be finished 15-30 minutes before going in water.

T1: hand towel and sunscreen

Bike: Specialized Shiv with one or two water bottles (one between the arms, one behind the seat) filled with race nutrition. Bike has CO2 cartridge, inflater head, two tire levers, one tube (sometimes two tubes and CO2s if long course) taped to the bike in spots where they are hidden from the wind. Race wheels: rear is Zipp 808 with power tap and almost 100% of the time, a Wheelbuilder disk cover, front is Zipp 404. I use Vittoria Evo Open Corsa Slicks. Pedals: Look. Shoes: up to HIM Sidi T2s, full IM Specialized S-Works road shoes with Boa closure. Helmet: Rudy Wingspan. Glasses-select from many based on race conditions. Cycle computer: Joule 2.0.

Bike Special Needs if full IM: two more bottles of "special" bike nutrition.

T2: Nothing except my run stuff and maybe more sunscreen.

Run: shoes, probably Saucony Kinvaras. Socks. Race belt. Visor or hat. Sunglasses: Sometimes I wear the same pair from the bike, sometimes I change. Anything else that race/weather conditions might indicate.

Finish line: Clothes to change in to, determined by the weather conditions. I want out of my race gear ASAP after finishing. Towel.

Hope I haven't forgotten anything. If I have I'll add to this

Randy, at this rate you might as well sign up for an IM and be done with it. You know you want to.

I have a bike and a 5k tomorrow. Moving my 3200 swim over from Friday to Saturday after the race. Then on Sunday, I have my own triathlon 3200 swim, 2.5 hour bike and a 20 minute run. More training = more food!

Being as it is the weekend I went ahead and had a few "tall" beers with a very large dinner. We may need to move the weigh in day to mid week. The beer ban is only in effect IN the house.

I'll play, too:

Running:  several pairs of New Balance 1260 v2 are in my current rotation...I LOVE this shoe, maybe the best I've ever run in.  It's discontinued but I just picked up another pair off of some weird NB outlet site for like $60 shipped ($140 when they came out...woot!!).  I've tried a bunch of other brands and somehow I always come back to the NBs.  I generally run in DeSoto Carrera triathlon shorts with regular run shorts on top, or my Mizuno running tights when it's cold.  I also have assorted Under Armour gear depending on the weather.  Garmin 210 (and I also have a 305 that depending on the time of day, moon cycle, weather, or general mood might actually work).

Cycling:  2010 Fuji Roubaix ACR 2.0 road bike with clip-on T2 aerobars, stock wheels (R500s).  Conti 4000s tires...using the Conti Ultra Sport for the trainer, which is a KK Road Machine.  Again, assorted UA base layers.  Louis Garneau shorts for long rides, DeSoto Forza tri shorts for up to maybe 90 minutes.  Edge 800 for electronics, plus a TrainerRoad subscription.  I'm currently working on a "build a cheap tri bike" project, so I have some assorted parts to that end.

Swimming:  Clearance bin Speedo jammers, like Randy I love the TYR Nest Pros.  I'm fiddling with a swim snorkel (Speedo) but we're not getting along.  No wetsuit but I'm shopping...probably going with the Vortex sleeveless.

Running: I run in Asics, and my last two pairs have been the Noosas, which are really comfortable. I have a Nike Dri fit tank that I wear, and a pair of North Face running shorts. That's my go-to running outfit. If it's cold, I might throw on a long-sleeve Brooks running shirt I have and a Mountain Harwear GoreTex hat, with GoreTex gloves. I wear the Garmin 310XT for running and biking.

Biking: I ride a Cervelo P1, and it's on a Kurt Kinetic Trainer most of the time. I have a Tyr tri top and bottom that I generally wear while riding, and a pair of Pearl Izumi biking shorts that I'll swap out with. I use a pair of black Gyro biking shoes.

Swimming: I actually need to buy a new pair of jammers; I've been swimming in my tri shorts since I wore out my last pair! I like Aqua Sphere's Kayenne goggles. I also have an XTerra wetsuit that I use when the race is wetsuit-legal; it's comfortable enough, but it always burns the back of my neck.

Gear of the Future: I'd love to have a powermeter on my bike, but they're so expensive. I'm a couple hundred miles into my current pair of shoes, so I'll need to start shopping around soon. I wear a standard biking helmet, and I don't want to go to a full aero helmet, but I'd like to look into something lighter and more aero than what I wear now. I'm also looking into the Garmin Swim watch. I have a 310 XT, which does everything but track laps in the pool. I've thought about the 910, but my 310 does 90% of everything that the 910 does, and the Garmin Swim would make up the difference without having to shell out $400.

OA Female Masters and $50.00 in prize money. I didn't know that they were giving out money at this race. Needless to say I was quite surprised when they handed me money and the award.

This was not a good 5k from a time standpoint. Coach made me race with tape covering the Garmin. Not knowing the distance left was what bothered me the most.. The Garmin would beep at the mile markers which helped some.

Once again, I was still unable to reach the point of feeling like I was going to die during a race. Given the last week of training and testing the 5k time was "okay" not great but it will have to do.

I'll play because I think I just might be back in the game after this week's progress with my leg!!!!!!!!!!

Run--Past 2 years--New Balance 890 (I have v1, v2 and v3). Current--Hoka Mafate and New Balance 1080v4. I ADORE the Athleta Relay skort for running and Adidas Climalite v-neck shirts when it's warm.

Bike--2010 Felt B16 with Specialized Romin EVO saddle and Profile Designs Aero HC bottle (between the aero bars) as well as a two bottle behind the seat hydration mount (in one of the bottles, I keep 2 spare tubes, tire tools, CO2 adapter etc. and I have 2 CO2 cartridges screwed into the mounts. Grand Prix 4000S tires. Bontrager RXL Hilo triathlon shoe and some sort of Specialized helmet. I always wear Specialized gloves (or my fingers go numb). Cycling shorts are Sugoi RS or I wear Sugoi RS tri shorts.

Swim--Goggles--pool--Speedo Vanquisher--OWS--Zoggs Phantom Elite polarized. Wetsuit--Synergy Endorphin sleeveless. I wear a short sleeve surfers rash guard underneath to prevent the inner arm chafe from the sleeveless suit (had a 2XU R2, but it took an act of God to get me into it, so I sold it to a friend who was a little leaner through the hips). I generally swim in a pair of tri shorts that I find are too short to cycle in and a 'tankini' swim suit top.

Fuel--Last season I drank custom Infinit and ate Bonk Breakers on the bike. I use peanut butter Gu when I run (the Gu on the run didn't work so well at my first HIM, so will need to rethink this for 2014).

Other "stuff"--I wear a Garmin Forerunner 410 (bought it when I was training for a marathon and before triathlon was on my radar) for running and cycling. I also have a cadence meter on my bike. I can put the Garmin in my "Safer Swimmer" buoy for OWS if I need to know how far I swam afterwards. Bike trainer is a CycleOps Fluid 2. When running more than 8 miles, I wear a 2 bottle Fuel Belt. On raceday, I use an "iFitness" number/Gu belt.

All of this is a FRACTION of what I owned when I rode 3-day event horses competitively (and a fraction of the cost).

Suzy that is hard core. I can't even imagine running in weather like that. What do you wear to run when its that cold outside. It was 39 at the start of our race. I wore shorts, jog bra and a singlet. Perfect running weather in my book.

MIke- congrats on a nice race!

Nancy-great news about your leg.

My secret is keeping my face and hands as warm as possible.  Key to that is a smartwool mask and wool mittens over liners.  Other than that, it's insulated CW-X tights, an Underarmour Cold Gear Turtle with an insulated long sleeve shirt over it.

I agree with you on the runs in the low 40s.  I would have worn the same thing for a race that distance!

The most valuable thing you can do for your endurance training is to schedule a weekly 2-4hr long ride from now until the end of time. Simply make this “what you do” every Saturday or Sunday morning.

The start of the race I had the jitters. I was watching the other age groups start as they seeded the swim with over 1000 participants.
