256 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Oh, I have the Home Depot/Lowes/etc. protective gear right now. Honestly, while functional they are very uncomfortable. I'm looking specifically for protective eyewear for athletes. I'm sure it exists...I've just never been a runner or cyclist who cared about sunglasses or other protective eyewear, but am now needing to! Sandi |

New user 42 Sumter, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Sandi, I know Oakley makes stuff designed for shooting sports that's the same frames as their other stuff but with different lenses. That may be worth checking into. Wiley X may be another brand to check. |

Expert 1058 Fallon, Nevada | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by b2b14 ok guys this is my worst stent ever. the surgery has left me unmotivated. i still cant swim, bike or run (or lift) I can and have been drinking beer. I can at least shower as of today so I am planning to walk 2 laps at the lake (prob jog the uphills) tomorrow. I promise to do better with the group going forward. I like the ideas for shirts so far but +1 on the 4th square, but I like the kona idea. On a positive note my Belgian IIPA turned out good and the Bourbon Barrel aged BIIPA was great. (same batch split in 2) . Apparently according to my wife i promised my anesthesiologist one of each since he is a home brewer. Oh knee surgery is a tough go...hang tough! Get mentally tough! |

Expert 1058 Fallon, Nevada | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by Qua17 Just checking in.... I know I'm supposed to be a good example to the group - but I am having a difficult time these days with sustaining my motivation. Ever since the end of my IM in August of last year, I haven't felt the same fire as I have had in years past. Plus, work these days blows which saps my energy more. I'm not posting hoping to garner sympathy - just putting it out there as a way to explain my less than perfect participation and hoping to let others know that they aren't the only ones fighting the good fight. Hoping tomorrow I wake up with the switch back on... The group is doing great and I'm proud to be a part. You guys rock! Hey Friend, Most of us have been where you are and are still struggling...at least you have an IM to show for it! We are here for you, just as you have been for us, so keep at it. Every day is a new day, make it what you want it to be. Best of luck in your training goals. |

Expert 1058 Fallon, Nevada | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by sandishr Hi all, It's been about a month....sorry for dropping off the face of the earth. Unfortunately after my last post, things went from bad to worse to pretty horrid. The uveitis was determined to be caused by a virus...basically, think herpes/cold sore/shingles, if you've ever had the chicken pox virus you can get shingles/cold sore/etc....in this case, the virus emerged through my optic nerve and essentially destroyed the retina in my left eye. We've been in a month long fight to save what very, very little vision remains. The virus was incredibly aggressive in my case, and I've been on a regimen of incredibly high levels of oral antivirals and antiviral injections in my eye every three days. A common result of this is retinal detachment as the retina is so degraded it basically starts fraying away from the eye, and about ten days ago it became apparent my retina was indeed starting to go, so I had surgery last week to attempt to save what little retina they could. I've basically been grounded for four weeks...slow walking is all I've been permitted. And let me tell you, it's not going over well. I haven't been this inactive in years. Next meeting with the surgeon is tomorrow, when I'll get some idea as to a recovery schedule, activity wise. I'm determined to maintain my goals and start up a recovery program and exercise schedule as soon as I possibly can. Fortunately, my right eye has thus far been unaffected, so I should be able to eventually return to a fairly normal, if different, life. Realistically, the physical recovery may be the easiest part. I'm going from being a fully sighted person to a mono-sighted one, and there will be a whole barrel of challenges that go along with this. But I will be building a full recovery program into the next year. Starting up and maintaining my tri training feels like a critical part of the psychological recovery for me. One question I think the group may be able to assist with...I've basically been scared into ALWAYS wearing protective eyewear. Since I only have one remaining sighted eye, the motto is to preserve it at all costs. This means protective glasses for cycling and running...something I've never bothered with before and honestly....I freaking hate protective eyewear, even sunglasses, so this is something I am going to have to seriously have to work on and research. I know many athletes use these....recommendations? I'll want something comfortable to exercise in, comfortable to sweat in, etc. etc. I may need multiple different options, so please feel free to chime in with what you like and why. Hope to catch up with all of you! Sandi Damn girl! This is serious; love the attitude and hoping for the best for you. |

Just to give you hope, my grandpa had one eye, and lived a very full life. Head of the farm from age 8-82. My grandma MADE him retire. LOL! I also know a guy with one eye (hunting accident), and you'd never know it. I would look into Oakley glasses. Take your time and try on a bunch. I think Rudy Projects are nice too, and you can find them at the eye doctor office. -Kurt |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by mirthfuldragon Originally posted by firebert Have an hour of spin planned for the morning, including trying clipless for the first time. If I have anything left in the tank after, I'll be on the treadmill. Clipless pedals are a game-changer. The first time you ride outside, you will fall. Buy a set of knee pads and wear some gloves. It took 18 months for the knee scrapes to fade for me - getting old means we heal really slow for scrapped knees. Find a big, open parking lot, and ride in circles at a medium-slow pace, and just practice clipping out - like 50 or 75 times per side, all while pedaling in a circle. It's not hard, but it is a learned-skill. Also, bike shoes are so much nicer because the soles are so stiff that they transmit power smoothly, without the insoles absorbing it. Yes! On top of this - spinning in sneakers is a bad thing - just ask me! My clipless shoes don't work on spin bikes (my pedals are different), so I wear sneakers to ride in spin class. The soft sole of the sneaker allows your foot to "bend" differently and therefore that transfers up to your knee, etc, now you're riding differently than you do on your own bike. This may be why my knee is shot and I have bursitis. My PT and I were brainstorming this. It happened shortly after I had been spinning 3-4 days a week hard for a few weeks and we think I just overused my knee in a non-normal motion. Now I haven't run for almost 2 months and I don't know when I will at this point. oh, and you will fall a couple of times - don't be discouraged, it happened to all of us!! |

Swim will be by ear as he is worried about the force on the elbow for another week or so. Sandi- I use Oakley radar glasses. They come in a varity of lenses both shape and color even have vents on some which keeps them from fogging up. I have used Oakley for many years from the desert, shooting, and sports. I wear them whenever I have to do a K-9 track so I dont get poked in the eye by a branch. They have always been good. They don't give them away but they are worth the money. http://www.oakley.com/en/womens/sunglasses/sport-sunglasses/radarlo... They do offer a very large discount for LEO/military if you know anyone who can help you out. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by SoberMike I was supposed to swim yesterday before work, but it was sunny and nearly 70 degrees out. When Mother Nature throws a day like that at you in February it would be simply rude not to take advantage of it. So, I got in a 32 mile ride and will do my swim in the morning on the way home from work. Somehow its easier to justify being inside at 6:30 am when its 30 degrees out. Also- loving all the ideas for the shirts. I have yet to see one I don't like. Way to get out there and make it happen! 70 degrees... mmmm... I know it will eventually warm up - but right now, a 70 degree day is like wining the lottery! Thanks for not letting it go to waste! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by acdkayak Name: Anne Story: Last July while picking up my 8 year old daughters race packet for a kiddie tri, I had an overwhelming desire to sign up for the adult super sprint. I talked myself out of it because I had not done any exercise in about a year, and weighed in at 220 and am only 5'4". Instead I found a race the next week that i knew i could walk the run leg, and knew i could cycle. I went to the pool that night and decided if i didnt drown swimming the distance for the race leg, i would sign up. I didnt drown. Family Status: Married with two daughters (9 & 7) and a 17 yo son from previous marriage. Current Training: Run focused over the winter. Spin classes for winter cycling...not much swimming since last season ended. In March I start back with masters 2x a week. As weather warms Iwill cycle more as the world around me cycles. 2014 races: A couple of 5ks and 2 local super sprint triathlons and 1 small duathlon. 2015 races: Many. We have lots of local super sprints and sprints that I plan on using for training. I also have 2 century bike rides scheduled. I kick off the season with a half marathon march 14th., cherry blossom 10 miler in april, and the lincoln half marathon in may. My first season culminates with the Miami 70.3 in October. Beer Preference: Ok..my husband is master brewer and we are part owners of a microbrewery....that being said i have a rather wide palate and enjoy most beers . Currently my favorite is an IPA that has some neat tropical overtones. Weight loss: Remember i said that i started this at 220? I have only weighed myself once since then...around october, and had lost 30 pounds. While i need to lose significant weight, my goal is to improve times and endurance and feel good. I will weigh in again at the end of march as that is my self determined start of my season. Someday i would like to see 135 again...till then i just keep training and eating what works. Anne - Welcome to the group. We are thrilled to have you! I loved your response to the question about your race plans for 2015: MANY! That's awesome! Way to go after it! A HIM is a great way to wrap up the year. If they hand you a beer when your cross the finish line - don't be surprised if you shed a few tears of joy! Good luck and let us know how we can help you achieve your goals. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by mirthfuldragon Originally posted by Burd Originally posted by cwpeters Originally posted by fifthcircle Here is his latest work. I freaking love this one! This is awesome! One thing and it might be too petty to some, can we swap out the heart tattoo for an M-dot? Great idea on the M-dot. +1 for me. We should check on the copyright stuff but I don't see it as a problem since thousands of people get it on a tattoo every year with no issues. I have a few friends that are lawyers that I'm sure would check into that for us if it's a direction we want to go. Use of a logo on apparel is governed by licensing and is a no-no. There's an argument for fair-use, since use as to a tattoo on a caricature does not imply any level of endorsement, and the level of use is so low that it'll probably escape notice. Legally, I would advise as to not use the logo. Personally, I also disagree with it - and I have a Moo-dot tattooed on my calf. I'll get on my soapbox for a moment - and I don't have a lot of room to talk here without being something of a hypocrite (with two IM-branded races and well over $1,000 in race fees paid alone, and likely at least two more coming up) - but I really don't like how much WTC's Ironman has become the defacto name for triathlon, especially among triathletes, who should all know better. I love Ironman Wisconsin, and I'll probably drive up there several times to ride the course with friends this summer - but when it comes to race quality, I preferred Rev3 and I hope Challenge keeps the standard. Check-in at IM Racine involved four hours of standing in line, basically to sign a waiver that I had already agreed-to online; IMWI was almost as bad. The post-race food was medicore. Sure, the crowds make you feel something akin to god-hood, but the race-system itself could be made so much more efficient. There is no logical reason it should take that long to do anything, and it has to be a choice by the organization. Quassy and Dells both took me less than 10 minutes to check-in for. That being said, unfortunately, if I do run a full-distance race this year, it will be an IM-branded race, because 11 more qualify me for a legacy slot and a trip to Kona. First and foremost - LOVE the tattoo! Second - I like the idea of the MDOT on the jersey but I can go either way. What about having the word Kona appear as a tattoo with a red heart in place of the o. Would that be a compromise? |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Okay! Got in a swim after teaching today. I only swam a half an hour (planned on an hour) but I got in 1500 yards, all with my beloved leg buoy. Brother bear I'm not going to know how to swim when I can use my legs again! LOL 300 warm-up 1000 continuous 4x50's I quit early (had planned 10x50) because I couldn't work the drill function on my watch apparently (thought it was right) and when I entered to save the workout, it's no longer there. Not sure what happened but regardless, the swim felt great and had i not had the watch I would have kept on going. I'm thinking a spin on the trainer in the morning and maybe a swim at lunch. Needing input: Tell me if I'm crazy: my sis-in-law texted me last night to ask if I would be interested in doing the Tupper Lake Tinman at the end of June (only 4 1/2 months away...). I hadn't planned on it as I want to do the HIM in Lake George at the end of August. She signed up - has never done a tri at all and I don't believe has run in a HM race (but has other races). She is strong and lives in Park City so has altitude working for her and a huge set of kahonas to sign up for this.....so I'm thinking this is pretty motivating and I need to get off my duff and get on it. Okay, so I can't run yet...but I will soon and worst case I run/walk the half at the end to save the knee. Am I nuts for contemplating doing this? The swim would be the easiest part for me right now, ironically. Edited by aviatrix802 2015-02-09 9:11 PM |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Just a quick check in - A huge thanks for all the support. I have a feeling that this rough patch is part of a journey and I just need to figure out what my next challenge is. Right now - I have no goal and that makes it really hard to stay focused with all that's going on in my life. Charles' post about getting a legacy spot at Kona has me thinking - but that's a lot of work and I don't know if I really want to miss that much time with my kids. But I'm thinking about it! As for now - here is my plan. I've got 13 weeks until the Season Opener in Hopkinton. Hopefully a few BDASers who love in New England will do it with me. Hopefully by then all the snow will be gone - but it's going to be close! To help keep my food in check - I'm going to sign on to fitnesspal and Buddy up with Alex. that worked a miracle and I would not have that Ironman medal had it not been for Alex kicking my butt into gear. I'm also going to try a new training plan - hopefully the novelty will help keep me engaged And I promise to post to the page at least six days a week. Staying active on the forum will keep my fired up. I know I just need to get going once again and I thank you for your help in making that happen. Speaking of - what's the challenge for the week? |
