chadtower - 2008-07-17 3:43 PM I admit that my modern musical theatre knowledge, if used as a single criterion, would put me squarely in the "gayest dude you know" part of the Venn diagram.

Haha nice. Naw, it's not bad. The last guy I went out with quote Gilbert and Sullivan lyrics to me in passing (and he's incredibly straight and manly) and I nearly jumped him right then and there.

mr2tony - 2008-07-17 3:33 PM Did anybody ever see ALW's Starlight Express? It was so so so so OMG awful that it made it MAYBE a week in Chicago. I was one of the unfortunate souls who suffered through it.

Nope. But I've seen Cats. Cats is pretty bad. In fact, I was watching some PBS special a couple of weeks ago, and they showed a scene from Cats and I realized JUST how ridiculous the show is - grown men in full spandex and cat make-up doing wicked awesome 80's dance moves to synthesizer orchestrations singing along with a click track?!?! Yikes!

Yeah.  Both of those were beyond bad.

Starlight Express - think Thomas the Tank Engine meets Tony Hawk on Roller Blades on Acid.

Cats has the "family appeal" though - no plot, lots of flashing lights, dancing animals and one power ballad at the end. Which is why it lasted for 20-something years, outdoing A Chorus Line as longest-running show. And my male dancer friends will be employed for the rest of their lives doing the National Tours.

True.  So true.

I guess I can't say much.  I did enough Disney cartoon (Alladin, Beauty and the Beast) compilations in Show Choir (yep I danced too) that any time I see one of those dang movies I can still sing the friggen harmony and do 1/2 the dance steps.

I was Alladin.

Thank GAWD we did not have show choir. We had select choir in my high school, but our director thought show choir was 'beneath' us, so we did not do stuff like that

Yeah.  Ummm.... this was in college.

Fortunately, the director also mixed in some killer pieces by the likes of Byrd and arrangements by Manhattan Transfer.  Nightingale in Berkley Square is my all time favorite because it was all acapella.  Beautiful arrangment.  At least I thought so.

I lived with a guy for a summer that originally started out majoring in Opera (Simpson College).  BEAUTIFUL Tenor voice.  Just beautiful.  Changed to a music major.  Then went to the USC Film school and is now a producer in Hollywood!  We still keep in touch.

Yeah. Never saw it. I did see `Wicked' here in Chicago. Very good. Does it make me gay that I'm jonesin' to see a musical? (NTTAWWT)

Nope, just makes ya kinda hot.

I heard Wicked was good. Never saw it. Read the book, though.

Wicked was very good actually. The one who played ... the bad witch was an understudy but was so phenomenal she got two standing Os. And then I gave her a couple standing Os backstage if you know what I mean! OK not really, but she did get to standing ovations. Shortly thereafter she was the lead.

That's cool - yeah, a lot of times, people assume that the understudy is going to suck. It's not usually the case. When I saw Phantom when I was 12, the Phantom was an understudy and he was phenomenal.

And this one is also gay.  HA!

I like the Tenor parts anymore, if I get to sing, only because the Baritone parts are usually so friggen hard.  At least in TTBB.  If it gets split in SATB and they do 8 part, it sucks.  Us and the poor Alto's.  Always getting stuck with the funky bits in between.   I like Harmony, and all, but daaayum sometimes it is the biznitch.

Yeah I did a few musicals in high school and college and then post-college stage stuff. Needless to say, I was a background singer. The only reason I got cast in half the plays is because I would bang the director beforehand ...
