Wooden Bell - 2011-01-31 5:16 AM Good morning!

I haven't been around the forums in a few days, but came in to work a little early to get caught up   Weighed in at 186.5lbs this morning, .5lb better than my goal for the week.  Looking to have a Monday morning under 185lbs next week (I've made it there mid-week, but haven't been able to hold on through a weekend yet).

Yesterday, I rolled over 100miles on the bike for January, which is huge for me.  In 2010, I did about 280miles total!  Even though January got busy, I had a MUCH more productive month than I did last January, so I can't complain.

It's awesome that you're doing so well in two areas. Half-a-pound can make a big difference, if only to morale sometimes. Weight isn't something I struggle with, but I've watched my GF and close friends go thorugh all kinds of anguish over it.
And to hit a high w/ your mileage is great too. Keep it up!

Ok, so I'm not Willie. I'd like to think I smell better, but that's another topic.

I managed to get an hour on the bike. Only 12.8 miles, but the 24-31mph headwind through half of it was a killer. It's a tail-wind through the other half, but I'm putting a very deliberate effort into not pushing myself too hard yet, so I didn't take advantage of it like I could have. I'm still envious of those of you getting longer runs and rides in, but I'll catch up over the next few months.

I just weighed-in at 153. That's post-ride, a glass of iced tea, and a chocolate chip cookie. Maybe I've been sicker than I thought. Well, anything between 150 and 155 is great for me. Realistically, anything between 147 and 162 is healthy for me, but I don't like being outside of the 150-155 range much.

Hello all!  I'm at 199.6 pounds today.  Yes, that's right, that number starts with a ONE for the first time in over 5 years.  It's a loss of 1.4 for the week and 44.2 total.  I kind of wanted a bigger loss to put me squarely and surely into the 100s, but it means I just have to keep on top of my nutrition and not slip with any of it this week.

As for my goal this week, I did great with the swimming, which was my primary goal.  I got 3 swims in on top of my coached session.  I'm looking forward to the next tri club swim session tonight.  I feel like I've come a long way in just the last week.

Unfortunately, I did it partly at the expense of my bike.  *ahem* I have not been on my bike at all in the last week.  Not so good.  This week, I plan to get in three bikes, and I intend to actually do it this time.  I think my biggest problem has been that I haven't been planning my rides well.  For running and swimming, I dedicate and schedule time to do it.  For my bikes, I plan to just go down and use the trainer whenever my kids are otherwise occupied and I can fit it in.  Not much of a plan.

I also did my long run (18km, 11.2mi) yesterday in the coldest weather I have run in yet.  -31c (-24f) with windchill.  I'm starting to believe the theory that there's no bad weather, only bad clothing choices.  I added a layer to both my top and bottom on top of my normal coldest weather gear.  For the most part, my temperature was pretty good throughout.  I did have globules of ice on my eyelashes at the end though.  Here's a picture of me and my friend at the end:

208 this morning down about 2 lbs from last week.

I am racing a 5K on Sunday and would like to break 30 minutes for it.  My last run just before Thanksgiving was 30:12, and I thought I could have pushed harder to break 30.

Did 5.5 miles this morning at 11:35 min/miles.  Felt strong but may have pushed harder than I should have, my HR was in Z3 a bunch and as high as Z4.

Trainer and pool tomorrow.

Deb awesome job ticking those numbers off! Now it's time to celebrate with three bike sessions this week right?

I plan on checking out the infinit sale as I have heard a lot about them and need to rehaul my nutrition this year after last years mistakes.

I would love to try it, and may still at some point, but sadly, it doesn't look like they are doing the sale for Canada.

Congrats Deb, I'm jealous.  Sub 200 is a huge goal of mine, and lately I seem to be going the wrong direction.

I believe that Infinit did their Canada sale a few days ago.

I don't know if I actually NEED a rest day (thought likely I do), but I'm going to take one. The Weather Channel says the wind here is only 20-24mph, but it seems like it's in the 30mph range. We're due another rain/snow mix also. I've not done much in weeks, but I'll chalk it up to needing to rest more post-surgery, even if I feel almost 100%.

That's what we're going to have in Raleigh tomorrow -- 20-25 mph wind.

It takes way longer than it seems like it should for anesthesia to get out of your system.  I'm sure that it's post-surgery hangover.

Darn weather....so it's snowing again.  I'm sure you all know that by looking at the radar, but 30 inches?  Really?  Is a foot, two feet just not enough?

In other news, I am trying to figure out if I want to go with an aero helmet this year.  I'm not worried about the expense....most of that will be taken care of with a gift from my sweet GF.  So I'm wondering is it really worth it?  I'm only pushing like 21 mph for an average, so am I going to get a serious aero advantage?  Who knows.  Yes I'm a gear head, I know that...I'm not sure what else I would buy with the gift card.

ice is starting here too.

And yeah i'd get the helmet if cost is not an issue. It'll help, and you'll go faster/same speed with less effort.

For the aero helmet you have to weigh the pros and cons, but I'll just mention a few things. First the assumption usually with the aero helmet is you need to be fast to have one, but really, the slower you are the more you gain from having one (not saying you are slow!), the longer you are out on the bike, the more time you collect in savings with the helmet i.e. great for HIM and IM's. The other big arguement with the helmet is venting. Most people say that aero helmets do not provide adequate ventilation because it lacks....you guess it vents!. I call BS on this for two reasons. First you are riding a bike and I am guessing you are wearing some kind of athletic appearal and not full on cotton head to toe. If you are then the wind that you are biking into will be more then enough to cool your body as people say you don't by wearing those martian looking helmets, the wind hitting your body is one giant vent. Secondly people say that wearing those helmets, you are trapping heat that wont allow you to cool off. Again I call BS as you do't lose enough heat via your head to make this a problem. And of course it is another way to fool people and look like one hell of a fast pro!

How big is your head?

I have a Giro Advantage 2 in a size large I'm trying to get rid of.  It's unused, but there is a very small cosmetic ding on the top of the helmet that you can't see without pointing it out.

FWIW i've never had a race too hot that i decided to not wear one, and i've raced all over in some VERY hot weather.

Just got back from a great run. Did 9 total, 1.5 warm up to meet up with a group, and we did a hard 6 miles, then 1.5 miles home for the cool down. 4 of us ave 5:50 pace for the 6 miles trading punches back and forth in the form of small surges. It was a lot of fun and made the run go by so much quicker.

It did start raining/sleeting a tiny bit near the end so i'm expecting some nasty roads in the morning

David,

When you first got your aero helmet, were you able to have the tail touch your back...or was there an adjustment period with your neck...sort of like adjusting to aero bars?

I haven't ridden with my helmet yet, but just trying it on and sitting on the trainer, I can't get it to touch my back.  Even if I tilt the helmet back a bit on my head.

My neck isn't exactly super flexible, but I'm just wondering how easy is it supposed to be for "most" people to get the tail to sit nicely on their shoulder blades/back.

Jason,

a few things come into play here

-position

-how you hold your head

-shape of your back

-shape of the helmet.

I had a pretty hard time getting the giro near my back with my position while many others do it easily. My helmet of choice is the older style LG rocket. g/f was the other way, she liked the giro.

but the way i rode/body shape it just fit me better, could not really get the giro on my back unless i actually looked up (it doesn't need to sit flush to work, that's why some helmets have shorter tails).

I had no issues off the bat, but i'd been riding in that position for a year before that.

I'll see if I have time to get some pictures of me with the helmet on.  It may just be my back/neck.  I have fairly large traps from my weight lifting days.  People used to say I didn't have a neck.

I had a great interval ride tonight.  I LOVE MY POWER METER.  Man...makes you feel so good when you know you nailed your workout.
