uhcoog - 2011-05-19 1:10 PM Kelly is a troublemaker.   That is all.

What'd she do?  What'd she do?

I wanna watch.

She has me sitting at work, thinking about how to move funds around so that I have $600+ to register for IMTX on Sunday.  Hmmmmmmmm......

She's had me download the Active.com app so that I can register her for IMTX while we're sitting in church at her brother's graduation.

Wow, again this place is hopping!  I have a lot of catching up to do (and will have to do tonight) but I love all the activity.

Has anyone ever been sunburned really bad, and then a couple of weeks later have excruciatingly painful itchy skin?  I burnt my back doing a long bike ride a couple weeks ago (I know, I learned my lesson - and have been lectured by my husband already numerous times about sunscreen) and it now itches so bad it keeps me awake at night.  I've tried various allergy medicines including Benedryl thinking an antihistime might help.  Also have been putting aloe vera lotion on it, bought some "#1 doctor recommended" anti-itch with cortizone lotion.  I even put pure Vitamin E oil all over it - which ends up being a sticky mess but figured I'd try anything.  It all helps for a little while, but when it starts to itch I just want to tear my back open.

Because I couldn't sleep last night due to itching, I finally got up and went to the gym for a swim.  I thought the cool water might help, which it did while I was in it.  Finished that up and when I got home realized I could still get a run in so I did that too.  Planning to bike and a short t-run after work, not sure I'll still be awake by then.

Any ideas on the itch?  It peeled already and is not flaky, but must be really dry despite all the lotions and stuff.  Or maybe is a rash, or sun poisoning, or ???  I'm getting desperate.  Help me...

My guess is sun poisoning.  Do you have any small white bumps or patches near the burn?  I would keep using lotion and aloe.  Hope you find relief soon!

--edited to add that I've had sun poisoning before, and the doctor didn't do anything special for it (medication-wise).

My thought was that you might want to try a really good exfoliant and see if you can get rid of the wicked dry skin.

No sun today in Hartford.  Hoping thunderstorms hold off until I get my run in.

I went running twice today. Both short run totaling 6 miles I was hurting all day my calf and hip have been bthering me since last weekend. Before the second run I put some stuff called bio freeze on both areas and the pain seemed to go away. Do you think it ok to keep doing it or do you think I should just take some time off?

Bio Freeze is a wonderful thing, but it can cause longer term issues.  The problem is it makes you feel better in the short term but doesn't promote healing, it just masks the pain.  So, if its just some short term discomfort, its fine to use but if you find you have to use it regularly to run, you likely have a bigger issue and need to give the calf some time to rest and heal.

When I was in college (and very stupid) I started to develop what I thought were shin splints.  Instead of taking some time off to let them heal, I started coating my lower left leg with bio freeze and wrapping it tight and then going to run.  The pain kept getting worse and I kept masking it and running.  Low and behold, one day the pain was intolerable and I sucked it up and went to the doctor.  Ended up that I had a stress fracture and because I kept running on it, it turned into a full blown break.  I was in a cast for the entire summer.  Not fun.  Moral of the story -- if the pain keeps up, give it some rest and let it heal.

I have my first race for the winter season on Sunday, its just a 4.5km fun run but since running is my worst area it will still be a good test for me. Since I bunged up my shoulder i have just been focussing on the running this past two weeks and have been happy with my improvements. Last night though, 200m into a 4km run and i get the dreaded stitch. I was struggling with stitches a lot earlier this year but thought i had it solved by not consuming anything within an hour of running. All i did differently yesterday, to every other day, was to sip on a 600ml bottle of water between 2pm and 5pm. I went running at 5pm. Seriously, i cant even hydrate myself now?

It has me worried now that i shouldnt have breakfast before the race. Which given im always low on energy until ive eaten in the morning is really going to suck.

-blargh grumble grumble grrr-

Are you getting a side stitch below your rib cage or along your rib cage?

If you are feeling it along your rib cage, you may have pulled an intercostal muscle.  I've done that in the past and it becomes irritated through the expansion of the chest with your inhale when running.

Yes, small white bumps.  Not many, but they are there.  How much longer until it's all gone???  I feel like it's never going to go away.  It's been almost 3 weeks.

Thanks, I need to just suck it up and remember sun screen!!!

No this one is below the rib cage, left hand side just to the side of the stomach, really awkward spot to try and stretch out mid-run. Its quite debilitating though, i definatly cant push through it.

I don't think no eating is the way to go.  If you don't eat your setting yourself up for a potential bonk.  I generally only get side stitches in races, I think it, for me, it comes from pushing (too) hard.

Heading to the pool this morning for a 4000 yard swim then a 90 minute easy bike tonight.  Looks like I actually may be able to ride outside today.  Plus its massage day!  Should help with the hip.

I had a swimming breakthrough in the pool last night.  I was dropping my arm when I went for a breath...not staying long and it was creating drag.  It finally clicked, and my stoke was strong and smooth last night.  Yay!!!!!

I had planned on a 2 hr bike outside followed by a 30 minute recovery run.  I have to break it up today, as my daughter has a music observation at school, and there really isn't time to fit it in.  I got up early and did 1 hour speed intervals on the bike.  I'll do the other hour and the recovery run later.  Tomorrow morning I have a 3 hour bike planned.  I'm actually going to the Metropark, so I can maintain some speed.

My kids are coughing and hacking.  My 2 year old has pinkeye.  Yuck!  I'm opening all of the windows today....it's a germ ball around here.

I finally slept last night, the itching didn't keep me awake, and this morning my skin feels almost back to normal.  Slight itch, no more bumps, and don't feel the need to rip my back open.  Even my husband said it wasn't red anymore (as he lectured me again about sunscreen while putting lotion on).  So, things are looking up!

My first tri of the season is Sunday.  Why my friend and I decided a half was a good idea for our first racet his year I'm not sure.  Trying to go over in my head what to do during the transitions, how to set up my area, pacing, what to wear, nutrition, hydration...  I really wish I had done a sprint first to practice.  Oh well...I'll manage.

Sundays high is supposed to be 91, but I'm hoping since the race is further north in the mountains that it will be cooler.  91 is too hot!
