New Haven, CT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED jarvy01 - 2012-01-13 1:19 PM I'm toying with the idea of returning to vegetarianism (or at least pescetariansim), but I'm unsure of how this will affect my training and my energy. I know several of you have lived/are living vegan lifestyles. I was a lacto-ovo vegetarian for almost 10 years, but I wasn't training like I do now. Can anyone share their experience with me? I will mostly likely xpost this on the nutrition board.
I love vegans, cows are vegans, they are delicious. There is no reason what veg, vegan or anything else, should effect your training unless you are not getting sufficient nutrients. Meat, fish and dairy provide alot of nutrients which are hard to supplement. For example, i cannot imagine how anyone lives without dairy and eggs. |

New Haven, CT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Registration for the Vineyard Warrior Triathlon is open: http://vineyardwarrior.com/ Marthas Vineyard is one of the most beautiful places on the east coast and Rudy and I are hosting an after party. You are plain dumb if you are in driving distance and do not do this race (yes - that includes you Kelly and Shaun). Plus the RD is Bat sh## crazy (just see his Facebook posts). Seriously, this race was tons of fun, great course, great post race party, wonderful weekend. I'll be carrying a BB gun to shoot out Rudy's tires this year |

I was vegetarian for quite a while before going vegan, and I've been vegan for a year and a half now. Since my veggie days I have run two marathons (and trained for two others, but was sick for one and injured for another - neither of which had anything to do with diet), and am training for my third marathon, 2 olympics, a HIM and my first IM this year. Once I cut out the animal products, I felt amazing, and have never felt better. I don't have any issues with heavy training loads or hard workouts. But you definitely want to make sure you're eating good, whole foods. It's easy when you first make that transition to rely on overly processed meat replacement products or processed dips and spreads. These things are fine, in moderation. But some people center their diet around those, which probably won't make you feel too hot. Some people will give you a hard time about it and insist that you are not going to get all the nutrients you need, but that couldn't be further from the truth. As long as you're eating lots of fruits and veggies and healthy fats, you won't have a problem. There's plenty of protein, calcium, etc. in those foods. One thing to be conscious of is B12. On a vegetarian diet you shouldn't have a problem, since this is still abundant in dairy products. But on a vegan diet it's more difficult to get - which is why I take a B12 supplement daily (the only one I take). You could also put chlorella (dried freshwater algae - you can find it in your local health food store) in your smoothies, since that's high in B12. Overall, just enjoy it and have fun trying new recipes. I discovered all sorts of great new foods when I changed my diet, and realized that I love cooking. It's a lot of fun. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions! I'm really curious, what does a normal day look like for you food wise? |

What does a heavy training load day look like for you food wise, also? Thank you for all the information. If I commit to making the switch, then I'm certain I'll have more questions. I've already read lots of books and cook a lot of vegetarian food. It would be hard for me to give up eggs. I really love my scrambled eggs!!! |

Member 117 Boulder, Colorado | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED A heavy training day - (I try not to count calories, I just eat when I'm hungry. These are just estimates) Breakfast: green monster smoothie with protein powder, chlorella (B12), and maca powder and banana with a nut butter (I'm obsessed with pb but I'm trying to switch to a homemade almond butter I just made today since I know it has no added sugars) ~700 cals AM snack: fruit and/or veggies ~200 cals Lunch: big salad with avocado, garbanzos, carrots, pine nuts, sunflower seeds, and homemade french dressing, apple with ~1 tbsp almond butter ~800 cals PM snack: fruit and/or veggies ~200 cals Dinner: cook a nice dinner for me and my husband. I love things from Oh She Glows, The PPK (the Veganomicon cookbook is the BEST), Vegan Yum Yum, etc. Usually around ~ 800 cals Evening snack: tea and fruit and/or veggies ~200 cals Run/Ride fuel: I love strawberry GU chomps for a marathon, but I'm going to be playing around with this because I can only eat those for about 20 miles before the sugar starts to get to me. Volumes of food would adjust depending on how much I did that day, but that's a general outline. |

A life without brisket is not one worth living. LOL. Seriously you shouldn't really have a problem Jen. I really wish I could hit up the Martha's Vinyard tri. I also wish my Dad didn't sell my grandparent's house in Falmouth. Would make getting to that race much easier. |

Her blog tempted me to try to go vegetarian/vegan for a bit to see how I'd like it, but I enjoy bacon a bit too much to give it up. |

Member 43 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Hi I have a quick question/need some advice!..tomorrow i'm supposed to teach a 15 minute tutorial on swimming, for other medical students training for triathlons. I'm not really sure what I should say in 15 minutes... anyone have any good suggestions? Should i talk about catch, pull, press, recovery and maybe some common swimming things you could fix on your stroke? If anyone knows any good resources for this that would be great, or if you have a suggestion! Everyone there knows how to swim and everything, so its more of maybe technique suggestions or something about triathlon swim in general. Also, hope you have a speedy recovery, jeff! i was also vegetarian for (sadly only) 1 year. i loved it, but couldn't keep it up when i got to medical school since i am not good at cooking because i lack patience sometimes, and was not eating well. i never found it to be a problem while training for my HIMs last year! |

I was vegetarian for 11 years and when I was pregnant with my first daughter, the cravings for meat were too hard to deal with. I still remember my first steak and it tasted oh so good! I have considered becoming vegetarian again, but I am not ready to commit. I do eat clean though - no processed foods, they have to come from the earth or have a head.
Jeff - have a super fast recovery! At least the surgery is behind you. |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Thanks for updating the group Kelly. Trying to type here with my left hand (im right arm dominate), so I'll keep it short. Surgery went well. Nerve blocks are great for first day pain, but somewhat annoying as it wears off, it feels like that tingly sensation when your arm or foot "fall asleep" and lasts for hours. it wore off last night, and the pain is actually far worse than i anticipated. Two vicadins are helping with that. Great nurses at the Farmington Surgical Center, and was amazed how many people either cycle or run. No triathletes That i met, but great people. Thanks for the kind words. Hoping for REV3 Olympic in early June but they may be a stretch. No swimming until May. |

Master 2538 Albuquerque | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Man I'm wiped! Rode my bike to/from bootcamp today. It was about 25 degrees when I left my house for the 11.5 mile ride there. Then a little over 50 minutes of bootcamp (big class today) and back home, which is all uphill. I know Garmins are notoriously high on calories, but they said 1170 for the ride and 654 for the bootcamp (HR stayed up there the whole time at the class). |
