Either or both are entirely possible.

Our relationships with our activities call for trial and error, patience and balance too

That sounds entirely too adult for me right now...Tongue out But when a manatee speaks, I shall listen....

I have to attend a Japanese Tea Ceremony (we have a Japanese Tea Garden on campus, how cool is that?) in an hour for my Japanese culture class....I'm looking forward to it ( Cultural stuff always interests me, regardless of country origin)--also, I think it will be a nice chance of relaxation.

I like the structure of those swim plans!

I usually get in and do 100 drill, 100 free, 100 another drill, 100 free etc because the coach I had (for 2 weeks in January) had us do it that way.

Okay... what is sculling?  I've heard it helps you "feel" the water.  Is this something I can learn to do w/o a coach?

Sure. I'm sure there are some good videos on it ... lemme look around ... the different kinds of sculls are pretty common drills and recommended for getting you to really feel and perform the "catch" of the water well (when after extending your arm, your fingertips drop to point to the bottom of the water and you begin to pull back with your arm.)

Heh. I am all talk and no walk. One of the least balanced people you'll ever come across.

Then again ... I'm not where I want to be, but I sure am far from where I was.

Tea-ceremony is so lovely. Been reading Japanese fiction lately ... you will enjoy it muchly, I'm sure.

Congrats on the new wheels.

I am also very competitive with myself. And I train alone -- I like the alone time. If I were running or riding with someone, I would feel compelled to talk or chit chat.

Wow, I sound really anti-social and introverted. :-(

One friend of mine is competitive and when we ride together there are short times of chit-chat when we can ride side by side, but most of the ride is hammering away one behind the other.  When we run there's more chit-chat but parts of our run will be faster than tempo pace so very quiet times.  It usually ends of as a workout of 90% effort.  It's what I call an "aerobic" workout where there's no intervals, sprints etc. but at a solid effort.

Yup, I'm pretty sure I will too. At least as long as my class mates remember that they are supposedly adults, and that they need to be quiet and show respect, not sit there whispering and playing on their phones.....eesh. Kids these days; they make me feel old.

Local bike club is hosting a 10mile Time Trial today that I plan to attend.  Anybody do one before?  What strategy?  It's an out and back with a slight incline going out.  Given no swim and run, should I just go all out from "go?" Go hard at the start but leave some in reserve for a sprint to the finish?

All of it is primarily to build the feel of the water at different phases of the stroke, and to imprint/develop the muscle memory to execute it well during regular stroking.

As far as being a newbie, I'd definitely just focus on the basic scull (front scull, the ones in the video, the ones that work on catch and initial pull).

The last time I barfed was during track practice in highschool where our coach/sadist imposed the "4min mile" workout on us. (I was a sprinter).  I puked hard after practice, along with several of my team mates.  It was miserable.  I shudder to think about an effort like that again.

If you're wondering what the 4min/mile workout is (good speed work), it's like golf where 4min is par.

800m warm-up

Time yourself at an all out pace for 400m.  That's your starting time.

Then do intervals of 100m, 200m or whatever.  Your total distance should be 1600m and total time should be 4 minutes or less.  You jog one lap (400m) between intervals (this is your rest, which you don't count as part of your time or distance).

So say you do your first 400m at 60seconds.  Congratulations, you're at "par" That means if you elect to do 4x400 then each 400 has to be 60 seconds or less to stay at par.

I hate that work out.

Finished my class early enough that I was able to get my open water swim in, apparently it was field trip day at the county park at the beach I went to so I got some odd looks emerging from the changing rooms in full wetsuit.  The weather sucks today (so 1100 was close to what I'm expecting/hoping for on saturday) but I rather enjoyed swimming with the wetsuit once I got used to it/figured out that if I let some water in through the neck I could breathe a bit easier.  Although I need to work on my bilateral breathing, Had planned a 20 min swim ten min down the beach then back.  When I could see the land my sighting was awesome and my speed was decent- not so much otherwise.  My pace put me squarely in the 30-40 min range for a 1.2 mile swim.  Hopefully I'll be on the smaller end of that as I will be able to sight off of my left side the whole time, that's my preferred side for breathing while swimming.

Good luck on the TT today Keye, try to leave a little bit of yourself on the courseLaughing!

Prepping the race checklist tonight, fixing up the bike etc.  Has anyone had a problem swimming in the desoto 400 mile shorts?  Those are my planned shorts for the HIM but it is a fairly bulky pad.  Any things I should look to make sure I have for race time?  Besides the regular expo there is also a tent sale at the local tri-store down the street so I might be able to pick up some last minute things.

Allen I'm looking forward to racing with you just in different venues on saturday Good Luck and have FUN!!

Glad the OWS and wetsuit worked out well. 30-40min is pretty smokin' fast for a HIM swim, that'll put you squarely in the top 1/3.

Haven't tried the De Soto 400s (though I've heard so much about them and love De Soto gear, dying to try them), but I race in Oomph! and they have a similarly bulky, specifically-long-distance pad. However, it's really light and dries out just as fast as fleece (until I pee on it, anyway). In any case, it's not going to be any wetter or soggier than thinner shorts padding.

I really don't know if I should link this, but oddly enough you'd be the fourth person this week I've mentioned it to ... it's my first HIM panic and packing list post. Don't let it scare you (about your HIM or me, though if you've stuck this far for the 2nd round no less you're probably unscarable), but it'll give you a good idea if there's anything else at all you need or want.

Hey, pod -

Phew, it's been a heckuva couple of weeks - but I'm back around. I'll never catch up, so I'm just jumping in here.

My knee is sometimes good, sometimes funky - I'm just going to plan that my May half-mary will be a run-walk fiesta.

Tomorrow is my last day to teach for the semester; hoping to find some time to add a little bit of strength and/or bike (or gawd-forbid swim) back into my life...when I get busy, it's all I can do to focus on making my run plan.

Oh nononono, it is waaay too cold for Southerners to get in the water, especially in the rain, they were shell searching (or I secretly believe that the teachers were just letting them run so they'd calm down).  It's odd even with mid-80's temps and sunny people just don't get in the water around here until May,  it was cool but not uncomfortable and some surfers were out but not the childrens Tongue out  the looks I got were from the teachers/chaperones like I had lost my fool mind getting into the water...

enders_shadow - 2012-04-20 4:00 AM Hey, pod - Phew, it's been a heckuva couple of weeks - but I'm back around.

No worries about catching up; no one need ever. Manatees take sabbaticals; did you know that? Just like professors Congrats again and welcome back. (DH is back by now too, no doubt? Family okay?)

Run walk fiesta will get you through almost anything, and heck if it's a good day you've got a whole 21K to decide at which point to run more or faster
