Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() losta - 2009-12-20 5:42 AM Leah you might want to think about adding aerobars to your road bike. It gives you another position to be in and changes the way your muscles work on the bike in a way that is beneficial to running. I've been working on getting more in the aero position on the trainer. Debb Take care of your cold, get better. Everyone else I hope you are having a good weekend! I just spent the last hour and a half shoveling snow. I'll consider it a core workout. Now for a little snow run. I've thought about getting clip-ons, but just don't want to have to learn anything new just yet. I've read that it takes some time to get used to shifting and braking and I figure I just ought to focus on getting stronger and faster on the bike. On the trainer I now spend the entire time in the drops or on the hoods (or even a little with my forearms on my handlebars). I don't ever sit up any more, unless I am doing a Spinervals DVD and all of those riders sit up during a break. I figure then it is OK if I do so also. Also, I am holding out a new bike with the full set-up as an incentive to do well on my HIM. If I have a crummy race, I probably won't get a new bike because "why bother." By full set-up, I don't mean all the fancy wheel stuff. I just mean a tri bike with power meter and the cool bottle with the straw between the aerobars. (The cool bottle is really the big incentive to get a tri bike!) And practicing in that position did make a difference on my long(er) bike ride on Saturday. So, Debb, just practice a little at a time and you can build the core strength. I was pleasantly surprised at how well I did on Saturday. Maybe there is something to this training thing, even with things like practicing being in the drops. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have to admit the long straw drinkie thingie Is enough to make me want to buy a tribike!! Looks tooo fun. I think that is the perfect reward for a great race. I have a feeling my Bro-in-law might be getting me areo bars for Christmas. He loves his and is always riding in them. I might be getting lots of gadgets for my training. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello from the chi-burbs. It's slightly snowy out here, but nothing like what you east coasters have! Just got back from first swim in a few weeks - ahhhhhhhhhh that felt good! I've been pretty good with sticking to the diet - much better about sticking to the 1 cookie a day - DESPITE having 31 varieties of cookies in front of my face taunting me with their deliciousness. We shall see what the evile scale says about eating habits. Been pretty busy here with all kinds of xmas stuff, went caroling yesterday and saw Avatar 3D on Imax which was eye-gasm. +1 to the straw drinkie thing - i have one and they are handy except when you put gatorade in it and it splashes all over making your aerobars a sticky mess. Put the stickie stuff in your downtube bottle and save the aerobottle for water - unless you have one of those double bottle ones of course. ![]() Eager to hear what tri related gear everyone receives for the holidays. Not sure i'm getting any, but don't really need anything either. Have fun out there! k |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good tip on the gatorade! I'm a i have a long straw drinkie thing in my future. I'm struggling weight wise right now. This morning I weighed in at 195. Hopefully I even out by Wednesday. So far my holiday training gadgets include two things I wanted - (1) A road ID and (2) a Polar Heart rate monitor. I can't wait to see what's next! I'm off to the pool now. Leah and Elke - We have 14 Weeks until CA 70.3!! YIKES! Edited by ~ AZ Sunshine ~ 2009-12-21 2:23 PM |

Leah and Elke - We have 14 Weeks until CA 70.3!! YIKES! It's even worse for me. I've only got a little more than six weeks before the Surf City Half Marathon and my longest run to date is just under 8 miles. But by February 7, I will (should) have the running distance nailed for the HIM and will just need to work on my hilly bike riding. (I'm already at 2,200 meters swimming and will be at 2,600 by the HIM.) I do have a running plan and am leaving it to my bike coach to devise a biking plan. Santa isn't bringing me any gadgets. There's really nothing in Santa's price range that I want. I think I am just going to have to settle for a trip to Costa Rica. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats on the cookie avoidance K! I made 3 types of cookies today (mostly as gifts for neighbors and such) but I had a few too many myself. Blah. I did spend 4 hours in the kitchen on my feet cooking so not exactly exercise, but It was tiring so I must have burned something. I am going to work out tonight though as soon as I digest some of this crap. I was tired after baking so we just popped a pizza in the oven. Not such a bright idea! "Maybe there is something to this training thing, even with things like practicing being in the drops" Yeah Good point - Maybe I need to be able to ride in the drops before graduating to Aero. What's worse is on the trainer it's hard for me to even ride in the middle position (Is that "on he hoods"?) even though it's the way I ride outside because I like to have access to my breaks since where I ride tends to be winding and twist forest preserve bike paths. Did you pick out what your new bike is going to be Leah? I forget. As far as I know no Tri gadgets for me for Christmas. Most of the things I need now are just out of my price range (Bike, Power Meter, Etc) and I'm not sure my husband would know what's useful to me. Right now I'm not even sure myself. I bought the book that Lisa told us about "Racing Weight: How to Get Lean for Peak Performance" - Only just starting it so no opinion yet. Does anyone have that The Triathlete's Guide to Mental Training book? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok i was bad. 3 cookies today. 2 additional frosted sugar cookies leapt into my mouth as we were frosting them. Suicidal snowmen and xmas trees I tell you! Ate a bunch of frosting too... oops... kinda slid off the knife into my mouth. The secret ingredient is whip cream instead of milk. I worked off at least one cookie throwing a bag full of old tennis balls that a friend brought over at/over/around the dog - she's currently in tennis ball seizure/coma on the couch. Back into the city tomorrow for more arting - i think. k |

I have been around all sorts of suicidal food in my time. Not to mention going into a trance and finding an entire __________ gone. I have to confess to overdoing the mixed nuts this weekend. Nuts are the only snacky foods I eat and I have messed up my challenge Oh well. Tomorrow is another day. I haven't looked into the specifics of a new bike yet. I buy from my local shop and will probably buy whatever he stocks or will order for me. Too soon to research it. Well, time now to change my clothes and get on the trainer. We have George C. Scott in the Christmas Carol on the TV. Not sure how good of trainer material it is, but it is what it is. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Is it possible for red wine bottles to be suicidal?! They are dropping like flies around our house. (With the help of my in-laws!) Hang in there Kiri! We are all feeling your pain. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good HR info there! Kate you've got a good mentor group! Have you tried your new HRM yet? I use mine 90% of the time on the bike, when I first started running again I used it often but I haven't used it much lately as I can sort of gauge it myself but I will again starting in January so my new coach can see what's going on. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello ALL!! Sorry for being MIA - Spent the weekend getting ready to leave town (and bike shopping) and yesterday was my last day of work - I planned on leaving at 1:00 and got out at 7:00. And yes - even though I did not log it I actaully got in a run every day...also got on the scale and am down to 227..yes tomorrow is the weigh in so I should be up to 230 again. Leaving for the airport in 3.5 hours. I actually packed my running shoes, garmin and running gear. This is a first for me. Speaking of Gatorade..does anyone know where I can get the endurance formula..it just seems to be much better for my stomach. Also - does anyone use endurox after their long rides or workouts? If not I suggest you try it. It really helped me a couple of summers ago after long rides, runs or a 6 hour volleyball tournament. I seemed to be less sore and dehydrated. I am not to the point of any long workouts will it be useful to me yet but I think all of you are. Suicidal Wine bottles..That's funny - I may have to steal that one. My inlaws are notorious for having baked goods around the house..especially when I arrive. Thus I will limit myself to 1 cookie per day. You guys have been doing awesome sticking with your training and plans. I'll talk to you all from Wisconsin. Have a great Tuesday!! |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() losta - 2009-12-20 2:51 PM Yes, way funny! http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/5749137/ (I think that's me almost) WOW..that's so funny!! There's another computer generated cartoon that involves a woman trying to get narcotics in the ER for her "seizure" and it shows her shaking/dancing and the ER nurse or doctor tells her that she didn't have a seizure it looked like a dance move...as a pharmacist that was SO true... Now this one...yeah, last year I felt like getting new gadgets, etc...but I realized what I have is fine for now and to actually TRAIN MORE..LOL. "You're a tool!..What did you say?...I said, Have fun at the pool"....LOL |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got an hour long bike ride in today. Felt pretty good. I'm trying to work at keeping my rpm over 85 instead being so focused on speed. It will be interesting to see how the HR factors in. Today was my last day of work. Hooray! I'm excited to start my vacation! I've got lots of wrapping to do and I need to prepare for a week with my in-laws. Since they will be visiting with kids I'm hoping to get some long rides and runs in. Big weigh in tomorrow. Don't forget. I started teh week at 195 and was 192 today. Hopefully I'll be down a little tomorrow. I just don't want to gain again. SWIM QUESTION: I noticed my left shoulder getting sore after my swims. Any ideas about what is going on? My quick guess is my form is totally jacked up. I'll have to do some research this evening. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kate Do you do any stretching before swimming or do you start up and warm up a bit before going all out? Another thing would be to have someone look at your form. Happy Wednesday everyone! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning everyone. I got in my run before Crossfit, did Crossfit and briefly looked at the posts. But now I gotta get out of here and hit the road. I will do more updating tonight. My weight was 138, which I think is a little up from my starting, but down from last week. I think I have the recent weight fluctuations figures out and there is probably nothing I can do about it. More later. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello Ladies and Scott! Everybody doing ok? I had a busy morning of pilates, crossfit, running and aqua aerobics. I'm really enjoying the variety and feel my core getting stronger. Next week I'll be ordering my new scale and join you (partially) on your Wednesday weigh-ins. Happy Holidays Everyone! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats Kiri and Kate and losing weight or staying the same. Both of big accomplishments at this time of year. And Lisa, isn't it kinda fun to spend a day or a morning getting in a bunch of different kinds of workouts. I don't think it's possible to do that much exercise with any kind of regularity, but once in a while, sure. My plan between now and November is do that one Wednesday per month, unless someone knowledgeable tells me it is a dumb thing to do. In December I got in swimming, biking, running and Crossfit and slept like a baby that night! I am in Northern California where my plan was to go out for an hour run, but it is 33 degrees here. That is a gigantic disincentive to stepping outside and running. I have what I think of as my cold weather running clothes, but I'm not sure they are good enough for freezing. There is the hotel treadmill. Yuck. So here I am, still in bed, with my computer. I've got to get it in sometime today. Tomorrow is my virtual 10K. I am racing against other Team Skinny people in my age group (W 50-54). Usually there is no one and I win my AG. Wow I usually never make it to the podium. Of course, it is a virtual podium. Anyway, the race is open between today and Sunday, and you can pick your distance. Something to think about. |

So I weighed in this morning at 217....I'm blaming it on jeans to work day...yes, I'll have an excuse for everything but I'm hitting the gym this afternoon! I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend! I'm picking up my iphone today so I can play with it all weekend!!! |

I'm trying to figure out when my long run and bike rides will be this week. I want to log some serious time. I'm excited to have the in-laws to help out. I hope everyone has a nice day tomorrow. I'm hoping for fun tri gear and gadgets under the tree tomorrow. |
